The Russian Greek Catholic Church (Russian: Российская греко-католическая церковь, Rossiyskaya greko-katolicheskaya tserkov) - also known as the Russian Catholic Church - is a Byzantine Rite Catholic Church sui juris in full union with the Roman Catholic Church. Historically, it represents the first reunion of members of the Russian Orthodox Church with the Roman Catholic Church. It is now in full communion with and subject to the authority of the Pope, as defined by Eastern canon law. Russian Catholics historically had their own episcopal hierarchy (the Russian Catholic Apostolic Exarchate of Russia, and the Russian Catholic Apostolic Exarchate of Harbin, China), however these offices are currently vacant; their few parishes are served by priests ordained in other Byzantine Catholic churches, former Orthodox priests, and Roman Catholic priests with bi-ritual faculties.

It always makes me sad to hear the vile statements of some Orthodox. Their hostility shows that their hearts know not the love of Jesus Christ. As Chrisitianity faces persecution in many parts of our work we should be finding a way to love one another instead of negating the Gospel.

True. I used to engage in debates with EO people on website platforms and couldn't help sense the vitriol in their speech. Religious pride is at the root of their attitude. The EO churches are nationalistic. Autocephaly is evil and stands against Christ's vision of one Church without borders, starting with Israel.

The Eastern Orthodox Church iz beautiful in her Liturgy, Theology, and Spirituality, but nasty in the way it is stuck in the past. The sins of bothsides could be listed forever and while the Orthodox hate good Catholic Christians tbe Marxists and Muslims will more rapidly take over. Not sure why this Archpriest says he serves the Russian Orthodox Church. This ecumenical nonsense which has infiltrated the Catholic Church (since the Second Vatican Council) is diabolical and totally anti-Catholic. Nevertheless, the Russian Greek Catholic is NOT an artificial creation for ecclesiastical politics as you erroneously state. The Russian Greek Catholic Church exists because parts of the Russian Orthodox Church wanted to reunite with the Catholic Church. Even though the Catholic Church is currently infiltrated by enemies of the Catholic Church trying to destroy it from within, it still remains the One True Church of God. No the Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic Church is a different Eastern Church from the Russian Byzantine Catholic Church. They are both Byzantine Rite, in communion with Rome, and of Slavic origin, but the Ruthenian Church is much larger. The Ruthenian Church has its origins in the Rusyn Slav ethnic minorities in Slovakia, Hungary, and the Carpathian Mountains in Western Ukraine centered on the city of Uzhhorod. The Russian Byzantine Church is the Eastern Catholic Church of mainland Russia, with a handful of communities in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Siberia, as well as parishes that have been established overseas in Western Europe, North America, and Australia. You also have the Ukrainian Byzantine Catholic Church which has its origins in Western and Central Ukraine outside of the Carpathian Mountains, historically centered in the cities of L'viv and Kiev, this is the largest of the Eastern Catholic Churches. I am a member of the Melkite Byzantine Catholic Church which has its origins in the Greek Patriarchate of Antioch centered in Syria and Lebanon with membership throughout the Middle East. I live in he United States of America, and am of mainly Scottish and Irish ancestry, so my Melkite parish is multi-ethnic but was originally founded by Lebanese and Palestinian immigrants, and still has an Arabic flavor and style to its celebration of the Byzantine Divine Liturgy. Of course there are also Eastern Catholics of non-Byzantine tradition, such as the Maronites, Chaldeans, Catholic Armenians, Coptic Catholics, Syro-Malabar Catholics, etc.

Incorrect. They are Catholic. Being Catholic is not synonymous with being Roman Catholic, or being Latin Rite. Being Catholic means that you are in communion with the Bishop of Rome and all the other Bishops in communion with him. The various rites are included in the Catholic Church and the Eastern Catholic Churches are in full communion with Rome, so they are fully Catholic.

+Sean Redmond This is the stupidest comment I've ever seen on this issue. We are not "Uniate Churches", we are Eastern Catholics and our identity is not defined by anything except being # 1. Eastern, that is followers of the liturgical, spiritual, and liturgical traditions of the ancient Christian East, and # 2. Catholic, that we are in full visible communion with the Bishop of Rome, who is the Pope and earthly head of the Holy Catholic Church of Jesus Christ. The Church of the Fathers, like the Catholic Church of our own day, had every Rite, Byzantine, Alexandrian, Roman, etc. and was of course united to the Bishop of Rome, so we are fulfilling the role of the Eastern Church that existed as part of the Catholic Church in the first millennium before the Orthodox churches fell away from the unity of the Catholic Church.
