Russian oil giant Rosneft put under German trusteeship - Preserving while disconnecting | DW News

Berlin has put the German subsidiary of Russian oil giant Rosneft under trusteeship. That means a federal regulator is taking control of one of the nation's critical refineries in the eastern town of Schwedt -- which is served by the Russian oil-pipeline Druzhba. The German-government said growing concerns from banks, insurers and suppliers about the refinery's future forced it to act now.
Berlin is vowing to find non-Russian sources of oil for the refinery.
That announcement about Rosneft is part of a larger balancing-act in Berlin as it tries to preserve critical energy-infrastructure while disconnecting from the Russian supply that keeps it going.
Another example is the natural-gas company Uniper. It was the largest importer of Russian gas, but is now struggling as Russian deliveries fall away. Now the German government is considering stronger measures to keep it afloat.

in the comments you can read " Don't put all your eggs in one basket." or "germany has learned from its lesson". people seem to forget that it's also about price. germany was able to benefit from cheap russian gas for decades. in the future, germany will have to pay more. industries will not be able to produce at the same price. this could affect germany's global competitiveness.

As a Canadian, I can say that yes we do have gas but it is on the opposite side of the world from Germany. Shipping costs would make the project break, it makes no sense. Even if you had to cross the whole of Europe, that would be a much much shorter trip than Alberta oil going to the Atlantic. Buy closer to home. Sure we can help, we have the resources but it is too far. If you want Canadian energy, the only fuel that I would suggest is Uranium, that is worth shipping the distance. It is 1 000 000 000 times more efficient in terms of transportation costs/kg

Nope, thats not right. Wind Power usually doesnt change that fast, so the problem here is not the fluctuation in production, but the fluctuation in demand. Thats why most of the industry nations relied on Gas as powerplants for those purposes during the 90s. That was the time the gas boom began. The good thing here is that with the upcoming from solar power the demand peak, which usually occurs during mid day gets compensated with Solar energy. So Germany is much less dependand on gas power plants compared to other countries. Howevee more such plants have to be built to get more felxible here.

As a former East German who migrated to greener pastures, I feel like at this point I should remind readers about the significant economy crash that accompanied Reunification for East Germany, and 30 years later there are still major gaps in wages and industry. The East is slowly being depopulated as more people move away and die than being born; it's going to be Europe's Japan, except poorer and more radicalized as those that still remain fall prey to right-wing agitation and fingerpointing. But I still agree with the sentiment that the current crisis won't break Germany; it's economy overall is much too large. Replacements for Russian imports are already underway, renewables expansion is accelerating. It will be one tough winter, that's it.

@@petersilas4234 It's certainly tougher for the Eastern European countries, but are they not success stories either? US has put sanctions on Venezuelan oil because, it is nationalized and the US can't control it. This is why the US has tried to assassinate the Venezuelan President 6 times. They want to put a Puppet president like Zelensky in power so they can gain control of the oil. These sanctions had almost destroyed the country and starved the people but, Russia, Mexico and China came to their rescue. Some intelligent Mexicans were able to secretly ship the oil to Mexico while hiding the payments to Venezula as other product. Then Russia came with their oil ships and China and Russia bought the oil to bring money into Venezuela. China helped Venezuela build big brand new shopping stores full of products especially food and their economy is doing very well and the poverty has been greatly reduced. The mass majority of their people love their president. US has so far snatched up 2 Mexican people that helped with the Venezuelan oil and put them in prison with no trial but, they are still sneaking their oil out. US arrogantly went to Venezuela to buy oil but still refusing to recognize the president. The sent the US contingent on their way with no sale in oil. Europe is not allowed to buy this sanctioned oil.
