Russian police detained at least 1400 people at anti-war protests that took place in 51 Russian cities, the OVD-Info protest monitor said as of Thursday evening.
From Moscow to St. Petersburg, protesters chanted "no to war" after Russian troops launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24.
0:00 Moscow protests
1:06 St. Petersburg protests
2:20 Yekaterinburg protests
The OVD-Info monitor has documented crackdowns on Russia's opposition for years.

Thank you all for the support. We're sorry for doing so little. We still weak, and our people are scared. It's hard to imagine the amount of poverty in Russia, but trust us. You can't survive in Russia without a job, reputation, connections - everything you'll definitely lose after participation in such protests. That's how the government has been teaching us how to behave. It's hard to believe, but we can't vote. We've got an illusion of elections, in which Putin and the government have always won. We protested. They laughed. The government has changed our Constitution, imprisoned all the opposition, increased the amount of police. To protect themselves from us. We protested. They laughed. We still protest. And they still laugh. Because... What have we got? Nothing. That's why your support is important to us. Most of us have friends and families in Ukraine. So we want our voices to be finally heard. STOP THE WAR!

There is a trade off between freedom and security and the predominant view among the police has always been one which heavily favours security. The mentality of a Russian police officer and a Canadian police officer are identical. The only difference is police in Canada operate under tighter legal constraints and we have better mechanisms to hold them accountable for violating those constraints. If the police had their way public protests of any kind would be illegal. Where you and I see people exercising their right to freedom of expression and public assembly all they see is public disorder and the potential for violence.

@@Idontwantahandle6669 you don't have to care about Liberalism to vote to be an independent country. 92% of Ukrainians 30 years ago said they want independence... since when has it been a Western Liberalism to want to be a sovereign country? Unless you think Democracy is a bolshevik lie.

Let's all write to the Russian embassies in our different countries to say how horrified we are about Putin's choices. Maybe send a beautiful sympathy card, saying we are so sorry that our respect for Putin has died. (Don't put your return address on the card or your full name!)
