Ы is definitely the most foreign to me. I can get really close but I keep wanting to pronounce it as И.

It is very close to i in English words like 'this', I suppose.

@@DeadnWoon yes, this is what I usually say. If you can't pronounce "ы", start from "i" from words like "stir, stick, will" etc. It's pretty close and you will be understood perfectly.

Been learning Russian for a couple years and I keep coming back to this vid for the explanations on o and a, thanks a lot! Dont give up on ы guys, just be patient and you'll master eventually! Try to make the sound while imagining stabbing yourself in the guts in a seppuku ritual, and you'll get it:) Also, note that the first a and o sound is for when they're in the syllable right before the stressed syllable in a word! Otherwise they will have the second sound if they're not stressed. Молоко is a great example, where the last o is stressed. The first o is pronounced with [ə] and, because its directly in front of a stressed syllable, the second o is pronounced [ʌ]

Try my tip: pronounce the more familiar и, a sound that requires your tongue to be stretched to the sides so that the sides of the tongue touch the grinding teeth. Then, without releasing very much tension, narrow your tongue so that the sides of the tongue don't touch anything, but the tongue is still not very far back as in у.

Hanna Jenkins. Hello! I am an Indian. I happened to see your there-year old comment about the pronunciation of Russian hard " i ". It's true. I don't know whether you are continuing with Russian. Still, I wanted to suggest a way out for hard " i " problem. Please keep a pencil horizontally between your lips and try to pronounce any single syllable word with hard " i ". The pencil naturally obstructs the tounge and it's middle part is raised back producing the sound of hard " i ". After 4 or 5 times remove the pencil and try without it. Anyone can get the required sound. Wish you good health and success. Greetings from India!

Вообще-то у нас около 20 гласных оО. А всего звуков около 60 (по некоторым подсчетам, даже 70 оО). А теперь приятная новость иностранцам: на слух русские распознают от силы 50 звуков, остальное - результат беглой устной речи. Но, пытливый слух при случае сможет услышать акцент)

The "Soft" vowel sounds are a blend of the English "y" sound and the "hard" Russian vowel sounds, except for the sounds of the "o" and the "jo" which are a little different. Am I close? The first two unstressed vowel sounds don't sound much different to the Russian hard stressed "a" sound. Close, but "no Cigar"? "No cigar" means "not exactly" in American.

This video is completely misleading and I don't advise anyone on following anything it states, most notoriously that the "soft indicating" vowels are different sounds - they aren't, they stand for the same sound and when following a consonant, they only define the sound of that consonant which in return may or may not change the vowel's sound slightly. The [j] is only there when no consonant is preceding them, as is evident from the video.
