Wow. It turned out that the South of the USA has much in common with Russia.. :)
Very interesting, not expected some of the things, because it seems that, yes, it's wrong to compare a separate place in the US with the US overall.
Once again, big thanks to Mark from Wolters World for letting me and you explore the world, appreciate your work.
Make sure to check his channel if you'd like to explore more of such videos yourself:

I would appreciate your comments, what was the most interesting "don't" for you, or what you would add as a Southerner yourself.

I'm from New Orleans and we welcome everyone to our city! My father came here from West Virginia in 1957 and never left because of the warmth of the people. Also be aware that within states there are regional differences -- New Orleans is very different than SW Louisiana (Cajun country) and North Louisiana (which is more like an eastern part of Texas). For food, gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish bisque, boiled seafood, red beans and rice are all awesome staples of our diet.

In 1991 Atlanta added 20,000 Russians to its population. I became involved with helping them to learn how to live there because I had studied Russian language some. At that time the people in the South had many misconceptions about Russians. But that changed very quickly. Today they love Russians.

I am from the South AND have had the privilege of visiting Moscow and a long train ride to Cheboksary. It was obvious that we easily were identifiable as Americans, and people were not very warm and outgoing at first. However the families we stayed with and met through these families were very warm and friendly. You have to win their trust before you win their respect. They were also very patient in our attempt in using the language. Overall a great experience!

Charleston style shrimp and grits is one of the most flavorful meal you could ever have. It's not just shrimp added to a bowl of grits.....heavy cream sauce, bacon and top shelf grits, green onions and garlic....no way to describe it with any justice. You really have to try it. As far as mayo- it's a matter of taking pride in what you make for others as a meal, even if it is just sandwiches. There is a distinct difference in flavors. Think of it like dumbing down a really fine cut of steak with cheap steak sauce.

The best comparison for biscuits is probably scones but lighter and fluffier they are savory not sweet but you can put bacon and eggs on them or butter and jam both are equally good then you have something called raisin sweet biscuits that have raisins and have a sugar glaze.

Boiled peanuts are the fresh green peanuts still in shell. Placed in huge caldron or pots with water with salt added (or the seasoning for sp8cy ones) and allowed to boil for a l9ng time. The boiling softens the shells while cooking the peanuts. Yummy treat.

Im from Florida and I would say boiled peanuts is the caviar of the South. I travel all over the US for work and I'll tell u its sold only in the Southern states. It typically comes in 2 flavors regular boiled peanuts and spicy Cajun peanuts which is flavored with cajun spices. Its definitely a Southern delicacy u can buy them at roadside stands, gas stations, ball games, festivals, and anywhere people gather for fun. Beer tastes really good with boiled peanuts.

One thing I disagree with he says about Southerners as a collective people is that were late all the time. I'm actually very punctual I lived in Florida 41 years. This could be a stereotype. But it is true mostly Southerners drink sweet tea but to me the only way to make sweet tea is with sugar. In the South go to a restaurant and Order tea it will automatically be sweet tea versus the north, east, west and Midwest you go to a restaurant and order tea it will automatically be unsweetened🤮🤮🤮

The northern East Coast like New York City Boston New Jersey they talk a little faster than where I'm from in the Midwest and New York has a different accent than Boston and Boston has a different accent then New Jersey. The same is in the south there is Southern accent which in the Carolinas is different than Tennessee, Mississippi and Kentucky has a stronger accent than Louisiana mainly Southern Louisiana has a Cajun southern accent.

Being from Ga (about the size of Germany area wise), a lot of what he says is true. It's not that a buisness like transactional type day to day existance doesn't also exist. It's fine to be a bit reserved, just expect a lot of open friendlienss. It's just as common as the genuine friendliness that's pretty much universal in the US (just not as open everywhere). The south is also pretty cosmopolitian, ethncially mixed, with various international cultures and foods being pretty common and available, BUT it is known for *Southern Food.* A lot of southern food comes from the culinary heratige of African American's and their traditions here. That's a fact true across the entire South. It's so good. Boiled peanuts: You MUST use fresh or raw peanuts. If they're already roasted or too dry, they won't taste right. The typical thing is to boil them (clean but in the full shell) in very salty water until they're soft. An instapot/pressure pot speeds this up, but otherwise a slow cooker or several hours of boiling is how they're cooked. They're just cracked/shelled w/ your teeth and you slurp out the peanuts & residual salty goodness inside. Some folks like to have them with Coca Cola. There are Hawaiian versions that add ginger to the liquor, but it's not common in the south, although some places do offer Creole spiced boiled peanuts. Yes its sticky hot in the summer, and winters are very mild usually. Yes.. and there's the diabetes inducing sweet tea. God it's good but it kills a lot of us. Az iced tea sucks by comparison. Dukes Mayo just has the best texture (closer to if you made it yourself). Many others are... like that AZ tea.. not the *real* stuff. Deserts: Peach pie. Apple Pie. Blackberry Cobblers. Pecan pie. Bananna pudding. Sweet potato pie. Blueberry Pancakes. Chocolate Chip Cookies. Cotton Candy. Ice Cream (from Chick Fillet) Corn bread (not a desert). Spanish moss isnt' that bad.. but the warning is reasonable. Mosquitos... sorry.. they're everywhere (outside the city) in the summer, and especially nearer the coast. My best friend took his college trip to Russia in the early 2000's so I know how much more alike Russians and Americans are than different - at least in ways that *ought* to connect us better than they do - or sadly seemingly will for the near future... It's been said that we tend to be agreeable to be agreeable, but not necessarily because we agree. Friendliness doesn't mean we're sharing life stories or becoming blood brothers (that takes time). I've heard Russians can take agreeableness as a commitment. You may be amazingly surprised just how much Americans LIKE Russians (as individuals) and are facinated with the culture (parts of it.) But the goverment? No... Dissapointement that things never warmed up and familiarity with old distrustful attitudes will be how most feel about it. "Why?" is the word on most people's minds along with a feeling of being exasperated like seeing someone's self inflcict wounds.

A true fact... Atlanta (Georgia)...is the birthplace of Coca Cola! In fact...the Coca Cola Museum is in Atlanta! (I have to admit though, the new museum which is in Olympic park I don't like as much as the old museum, the old museum had a place at the end of the tour where you can try any coca cola product from around the world and a machine shot a arc into your cup from a machine! They still in the new museum allow you to try the different sodas from the world, but no machine that shoots a arc anymore into your cup) "Southern" food...as mentioned smoked meat BBQ is quite common, if you have ever heard the term "soul food" this often has southern influence... Grits, collard greens, pecan pie, etc . Catfish is a common, also if you are in Louisiana you will find creole inspired foods like gumbo, frog legs, boiled crawfish, etc, the biscuit sandwhich (biscuit, egg, & bacon) is quite common for breakfast (was not a cookie, just a well cooked biscuit 😉), biscuits with gravy is a must too, boiled peanuts is a huge thing of Alabama (they have peanut festival) Spanish moss yes can have chiggers (they are like super small insect) that will bite you and will look like mosquito bites The history thing is big there, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina & Virginia is all part of what we call the "13 original colonies" (the first 13 colonies under British/UK control that started the USA, it is represented in the 13 stripes on the USA flag 🇺🇸) , you often find signs there talking history 1 thing I would add that was not in the video about the south...religion..religion is BIG in the south, in particular protestant denomination of Christianity (presbyterian, Baptist, gospel, Lutheran, etc) is the dominant religion in the south and although you don't have to attend...you will see it in how they live their life...so for example you may see a family pray before they eat their dinner (and if you are in the presence of this, even though you may not be religious, do not eat your dinner with that family before they end their prayer, just wait until they are done praying) As far as foreigners coming, I would say a place like Atlanta you will be 100% safe, the smaller towns you have to be careful as there are KKK (ku klux klan, a rascist/terrorist like organization) that hates almost everyone, but especially African Americans but also foreigners, you may come upon a super "patriotic" person in the south that may not like a Russian...but I would say it's not the majority case...Americans I believe overall are curious about Russians and the culture of them, we know there is difference of the government and the people, the biggest problem I would say for foreigners and the south is transportation...Atlanta is good public transportation system, but many other places in the south you need to drive a car 🚗

Accounting for more than 50 percent of all U.S. peanut production, Georgia produced the most peanuts of any State, with a 2022 peanut crop estimated at 2.9 billion pounds cotton being the other thing for production grown. "Boiled Peanuts" are just peanuts that are boiled and normally have cayenne pepper, garlic powder, crushed red pepper, Old Bay, paprika, Cajun seasoning when they are done being boiled or even when they are boiling (depends on the cook), however be careful if you are a diabetic, peanuts have sugar in them.

Howdy from the southeast. A Russian accent is as unique as a southern US accent. Xenia Onatopp in the 007 movies, the one who crushed people with her legs, best accent ever! I'd really like to visit ole Russia one day, always been fascinated with people who live and thrive in the provincial area of Siberia. Heinz BBQ sauce is subpar mess at best, full of that fructose corn syrup. Southerns take mayonaise seriously. Dukes is the one, akin to While Lilly flour for buttermilk biscuits. Speaking of which those biscuits are very savory, basically flour with buttermilk and lard cut in then baked, nice and fluffy inside with a little crisp on top and bottom. Come visit, check out Charleston S Carolina, Savannah Georgia, Natchez Mississippi, The Smokey Mountains of Tennessee and New Orleans. New Orleans is going to have some the best food your ever put in your mouth. Have a great new year ! Peace.

Born and raised in the Lowcountry of the Great State of South Carolina. Yes we're all about our manners and we're raised to be polite and friendly, however we don't take any crap from anyone who is disrespectful to us or someone else around us. Our food is the best in the whole country of of America. We have the cleanest cities Minus Atlanta but they're no longer really southern. Boiled peanuts are delicious (mine favorites are hot and spicy) No if your child is misbehaving in public and can't act properly then don't bring them out in the public. 90 degrees isn't that hot to us, we don't like the cold. Anything below 60 degrees cold to us. South Carolina has the best BBQ. We are the birthplace of BBQ. So I had to add this edit...We don't do bottled BBQ that's not BBQ sauce. We make our from scratch. Here in SC we have hot Vinegar and mustard based BBQ sauce...some people like tomato based but that's just lazy sauce here.

Biscuits. These are warm, flaky bread that have lots of uses. They can be buttered and if you like sweet, put some jelly on them. They can be smothered with gravy and even better if you add some ground sausage. They can be used to "sop up" gravy or another favorite is the egg yolks of sunny side up eggs. Grits. If you like mac n cheese, you can imagine another starchy food with cheese is just as good or better. Shrimp I always thought of as more cajun southern than anything but also very good. Lots of people like a combo of salty foods with sweet so some like bacon with syrup. Some would rather have bacon just be salty goodness! Can't resist adding that this Texan isn't impressed with Dukes or the other brand. Born and raised Texan and I much prefer a little zip so must confess it is Miracle Whip for me. I'm pretty sure Dukes is a Georgia, Carolinas thing but someone else can correct me if I am wrong.

In general the Wolters World videos are good from a broad standpoint espically for a forginer. At times he definitely wings it in order to find some don'ts and this is evident even to Americans who don't live in the region he is talking about. The don't about the Spanish Moss is a perfect example. I still am confused why that made the video. I doubt many are rolling around in the moss. It is definitely true about the slower lifestyle and that was a good point to highlight for someone who is from outside America. It is night and day between where I live in America vs the southeast in terms of the speed of the culture.

First off, I love Russians. But that might be because I have been friends with some. I’m from NE Texas. Biscuits are more like a scone, but don’t have to be sweet. Not at all the same consistency, but biscuits are usually interchangeable with bread rolls in our meals. Ps Im probably the only Texan who doesn’t like sweet tea. If you ask, a decent amount of restaurants do have unsweetened iced tea. It’s often not actually on the menu.

Boiled peanuts are delicious. They are soft, juicy and salty. They also have some that are spicy. I enjoy Russian History, and I live in the deep south... so I guess this is why this video was recommended to me. :) I don't know anyone that has a problem with Russian people

Honestly, in my area at least, the Russian stereotype is that they are tough, polite, and can handle their liquor. I don't really know any negative stereotypes for them.

Your English is great. Just thought I'd tell you that. I would be very surprised if anyone gave you any trouble about being Russian. I'd be shocked... really. You'd find people friendly everywhere in the US. Mostly Americans have forgotten about the cold war and all that. Even now... 2/22/22... people think of Russians as separate from Putin.

Arizona and New Mexico is actually considered it's own region. Basically, "the South" is Texas and eastward. Mostly it's because of a historical context: the Civil War between the federation vs. the confederation; the western territories, like California, Arizona, and New Mexico were territories of Mexico, which after the "Western Expansion" (the war with Mexico including the Alamo, gold rush in California and the Oregon Territory, etc.), got incorporated into the federation.

I think folks getting offended by someone else correcting their child is very much a younger generation thing and happens in the South too. I thinks it's just another erosion of society and to me, can't understand why it is offensive. Kids will hide their naughty from you and in my mind, if I don't see it but someone else does, then hell yeah tell them to knock it off. This is where I think the old saying It takes a village comes from. Kids growing up when this was acceptable knew if they didn't behave, it wasn't just Mom and Dad that would get on to them. People held more the same wholesome values and wanted their children to grow up with these values and considered this a good thing. We had more freedom even in a city to play out in the streets further from home and not necessarily supervised all the time. And if Mary three houses down called Mom and said Hey your kids were doing this or that and I told them to knock it off, my Mom would apologize for our rude behavior and we would get it again when we got home for embarrassing her. It would never have occurred to Mom to be offended someone was watching over us and our safety as well as helping us to grow into a good person with manners and respect.

Yes! Manners are a big thing in the south. More so than the rest of the country. We believe in respecting the elders. I live in the Appalachian region (West Virginia). There is a stereotype that West Virginia or "Appalachian people" in general are INBRED. Definitely not true these days, but that did go on in the past. The movie Wrong Turn didn't help eliminate that stereotype. We do love our Dukes mayonnaise. People gladly help each other here. I've asked a random stranger in public to help jump my car when the battery died. He called his brother to drive me jumper cables, then wouldn't accept my money. The southern accent is generational. We all sound a little bit different depending on where in Europe our ancestors immigrated from. My most recent ancestors immigrated from Northern Ireland, some of that accent remains when we speak. Others, like people from Okracoke sound like Cockney English. Some people sound like they have a mild Scottish accent. The southern US is a wonderful place. Hospitality is important to us.

Boiled peanuts do not need salt. They are boiled in salty water so they are already salty. I grew up in Georgia and I love them, but they are rarely found outside of Georgia or Texas so most people do not like them.

Well, as far as it takes a village to raise a child...that's how I grew up. If you were sent home from school all the moms had something to say on your way home then your parents would be really mad because you embarrassed the family name.

One thing that I do not understand is when you keep referring to the South as Texas. Texas is not the South culturally (for the most part), just like Florida is not the South culturally (except for north Florida), Wolter is mainly describing Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina...and even among these states, there are cultural differences. However, Wolter does a great job of overall expectations in the South.
