This is helpful. These elders are very brave, and they are a good example of conscience for all Russians and us to consider. It also says something to me when I see the height, weight, and fitness of Russian police, and then I see who ends up going to the war. What a cold-hearted system the Siloviki are. After contemplating what one might do, I tend to think supporting an underground railroad that gets young men and isolated anti-war activists out of the country is the best thing to do. It saves lives and it moves informed voices into spaces where they can tell us their stories. This is why Zack is an excellent example of peaceful anti-war activism. He is not in the Russian army, killing others until he loses his own life. He is alive and learning and speaking out from his experience in a way that few can.

I became a huge fan of Yelena Osipova since the War in Ukraine started! It is heartbreaking and cruel for retired people to face jail for speaking up. Zack, I am deeply sorry to hear about what happened to you. It's a terrible situation and completely unfair. I can only imagine the pain you are going through. Please accept my condolences. May your grandmother rest in peace. She is proud of you more than you know. After she sees how utterly she was brainwashed along with so many fellow Russians, millions of them, and seeing how you resisted all of this alone makes her proud even more. She will always watch over you because she loves you. I can't even imagine how devastating this must be for you. I have a lot of respect for you and your strength in dealing with this situation. I wish you all the success and happiness in the world, even though I know it won't be easy. Just know that you have my support and sympathy.

These people are brave. I am convinced that there are many more older people in Russia who are against the war. I suspect that you will mainly find these people among those who have had a better education and have worked or lived in the west for a while. Over the years I have known quite a few Russians with similar interests as we had and who liked the same bands. We didn't have any nasty political conversations. This picture is quite different from what I see in the interviews at 1420. This is not entirely explainable to me. No doubt the pressure of propaganda is very strong, but people with a little education know the way to get more information. American and British rock and pop is still popular in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. All in all, pretty crazy.

Poor Russian Elderly. They can’t make it on their shrinking Pensions. They were wiped out in the Nineties and now it’s happening again. Once the Ruble crashes they suffer greatly and can’t make it and depend on relatives or handouts. This is disgraceful that they are reduced to becoming beggars once again. This keeps happening over and over. Disgraceful.

И можно звонить через wi-fi как будто ты находишься в России, по тарифам, которые для России.

Now, I know a lot more about what the pensioners in Russia think of this: many are neutral, some are pro-war, but more than I thought are anti-war. Judging by all the cases mentioned here ("fakes" and "discreditation" online, artwork, even fire!), I think these dissidents are quite brave, and the Kremlin is (once again) tyrannical. Thanks for producing this video!

Thank you Zack for bringing up this topic and again in a very professional manner! So glad you can do what you are doing in a free society. Those older people are certainly brave, especially the old lady from Piter. But how many are they in reality? One could certainly be under the impression the older generation in Russia supports Putin and his regime regardless indeed. So it's good to learn from you about the those other facts. Not being able to ignore state propaganda and use the internet, for example, certainly plays a role in this, but how many older people actually have the desire to inform themselves from sources other than the ones they are used to throughout their lives? Lifelong habits and, in Russia, financial constraints I guess will prevent this. And even in countries like the one where I live, this behaviour of older people is not very different, even if the financial means are much better here. Let me give you an example from my own family environment: After talking to my 92 year old god father, a lifelong engineer and solid chess player, I was all the more surprised when I recently heard from this mentally as well as bodily fit guy (sadly he lives about 400 km away from me) he felt somehow lonely after the death of his wife last year, and now is suddenly interested in the internet so he could follow online discussions in forums. He has bought a smart TV with access to the internet but is left alone with the use of the new device. He lives in a house together with the family of one of his sons (a University teacher and scientist), but the family - most likeky for time constraints - doesn't like to be bothered by the old guys curious questions on how to use the device and the media new to him and so the old man is stuck again 🤔 .... That too exists and probably quite often....

Thanks Zack. Another thoughtful and interesting video ❤ I've seen reports that several of the elderly people who tried to set fire to enlistment offices were the victims of scams. Some had money stolen from them and were instructed to do this to get it back, some were offered money to do it to pay off debts, and some were told they were doing it on behalf of official organisations, and were threatened if they didn't comply. Obviously russia blamed Ukraine for the scams, but others have suggested that the instigators were just russian criminals. (I'm not saying I believe any of this) Have you heard of anything like that?

Russian retirees are most from USSR era, and so they are most pro war with Ukraine. Most of russian retirees, if not all of them having soviet mentality (in Russian language we call it as sofkovyu mentalitet). Unfortunately this is one of the problem that current Russia is facing. As long as this type of mentaility exist in Russia, nothing is going to be change in Russia. We need to wait another generation or two, something like 20 to 40 years, before all these people with soviet type mentality will be gone, and then we will see some changes in Russia.

I may be wrong, but my understanding of the OVD data is that +/-20.000 has been detained only, and +/-700 has been fined or given a prison sentence for protesting against the war. But whatever the number, it's pathetically low compared to the size of the 144.000.000 population. I doubt the elderly represent a majority of the 20.000/700. Of course single examples can always be found, but they aren't representative for the Russian population as a whole. We agree that a majority of the population supports everything MadMan, but I don't think we can make any conclusions on whether it 70, 80 or 90%. For me no amount of propaganda can justify or excuse the behavior of the Russian population. Ceterum censeo Putinem esse delendam.

You are doing your usual excellent job by American standards, which is an accomplishment granted that you are not a native American. We believe in free speech and the right to bare arms, which is relevant to our lives. If you look into our Vietnam War you will see that we have never had an accounting of responsibility, or even an explanation of why we fought the war. Our government took our money, our lives, and our dignity to fight the Vietnam War BECAUSE THEY COULD. Imagine being the only person with a gun. How would such a situation impact your behavior or anyone else´s behavior. A very simple question turns into an infinitely complex answer. This is not at all as simple as you make it out to be. The very simple fact is that my government has the discretionary right to murder people in Ukraine and Russia BECAUSE THEY CAN.

They are wathing Putler sending their children, husbands into the slaughter and they are doing nothing except a few hundreds that are obressed already. I have watched this elderly woman being abused in the streets and its just sickening. Russians will never change and those who want a change just escape to the west.

This IS a generational divide just like Brexit was a generational issue. Nobody lives forever. All those of Putin's government and most strong backers are from the Soviet era. There can be notable shifts in politics and opinion in a country within 10 years because a certain generation all got old and died. We're at that point now for Russia. Most of Putin's government including himself will probably be dead in 10 years, and most of his supporters that are over 65 will have gone the same way since the average lifespan of Russians is still nowhere near other developed countries. You have to be 40 years old to barely remember the Soviet Union. The disparity in opinion between social strata is HUGE because of that dramatic cut off point in Russian history. Russia just won't be the same country in 10-15 years as most of the born and grown up Soviets prior to the 1960s will be dead and buried. Why else do you think they're desperately trying to "re-educate" young people in schools now and messing with the curriculum? They think they can stop progress even beyond the grave, but it won't work.

A Russian anti-war protester who became a symbol of opposition to the Kremlin has died in a mysterious case. Local media said Olga Nazarenko had now died in hospital after a "fall from a height" two weeks ago that was described as an accident. Several Kremlin opponents have been killed in cases, and an anti-war activist in Rostov, southern Russia, also died this year in police custody from alleged torture. On Facebook, tributes blamed Nazarenko's enemies for her death. "Cursed are the cannibals who devour our best," one person wrote. Another said: "Our indomitable Olga. Have they killed you?" Friends also speculated that she had fallen from a tree. Nazarenko was known for his persistent protests against the war and had appeared in several opposition media reports and videos. Attacked on the street She had organized weekly one-man protests, despite being regularly detained by the police. She had also been attacked in the street and had lost her job as an associate professor at a local medical university because of her protests.
