In that case, could I politely request that you do not put an English title to the video? The video title and the synopsis are exclusively in English which means that when people search for similar videos it appears as an English language video. This is obviously not the case which is then disappointing for those who chose to click on the video.

The jewels that were photographed and seen in photos are stunning. Just imagine all the jewels that we did not see and that have been sold recut and are all over the world today, A couple of the most stunning tiara’s that Queen Elizabeth wears are from the Romanov collection.

True. But Queen Mary (?) did pay for them, albeit at secondhand prices. But they weren't stolen or anything. One of QEII's favourites, and is seen wearing it in this documentary, is the Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara - it's the one made of interwoven circles of Diamonds, which can be worn with or without the original pear-shaped Pearls, or with a suite of gigantic Emeralds - which aren't part of the original Russian tiara, but HMTQ seems to favour wearing it with the Emerald suite. I think it's her absolute favourite Tiara, and she is every bit aware of the great suffering and upheaval that brought it to the vaults of the British Crown. I think she wears it with great respect for its original owner.

There was another English speaking gentleman who seemed very knowledgeable about the different pieces and what happened to them. This information gives me a good foundation to do my own research. I don’t speak this language, but I remember parts of the translated version. The most exciting parts are about Felix, and the rest of the essential parts of the story are primarily told in the interviews in English. Really wish this was available for purchase in English (since we have some of their stuff). first part: these scenes are from the coronation of the new and final Tsar Nicholas. 3:10 they made a diamond pin to commemorate the coronation for special guests, and very few of these pins remain today. French culture had a significant influence on Russian high society. They even had their laundry done in France. The Russian royal jewelry collection features the vibrant colors of nature. They wore real jewels at their opulent costume parties. The jewels from the Empress's emerald crown and sapphire diadem can be removed and worn separately. 16:20 the Empress’ crown consists of two crowns, worn together for the coronation and weddings. The top Nuptial Crown and the bottom diamond-studded kokoshnik with the enormous, rare pink diamond. The Vladimir Tiara with the hanging pearls ended up in the British royal family. It was bought by Queen Mary, who was obsessed with jewelry (and she ripped her Russian relatives off on the price when they fell on hard times), and the pearls can be removed and replaced with emeralds or other stones. Civilian Russians are starving. Empress Alexandria and Grand Duchess Vladimir had a fierce rivalry. Grand Duchess Vladimir wants to oust the Tsar and attends all the important events (she was later sent away by the Tsar as punishment for planning a coup). Felix Yusupov, the sole heir to the enormous wealth of the Yusupov family, had a vast art collection, dozens of estates, businesses, factories, mines, etc., and lots of jewelry. Xenia, the French lady, said that Felix-who was presumed to be bisexual-would sometimes go out in public dressed in drag wearing his mother’s fine jewelry. She tells a story about when Felix once attended an event dressed as an exquisite, beautiful lady and was mistaken for an aristocrat woman by a royal family member (I guess King Edward). Felix bolted from the event when he (as she) was noticed. Felix presents his new wife with many fine jewels for their wedding and has a tiara made by Cartier for her. It’s made from pressed crystals, not diamonds. He later created a scrapbook to catalog and remember the lost jewels, hand-painting the color of each gemstone and writing the type and carats of the gems used in each parure. One of the prized pieces from the Yusupov jewelry collection-and the last to eventually be sold off-was the famous La Peregrina pearl. It was the most perfect large pearl ever found and had been in his family for a long time. His mother, Tatiana, used to wear it in her right ear. Pearls were harder to find these days, making jewelry quality pearls even more valuable than gemstone jewelry. Xenia tells a story about one of the Yusupovs taking the La Peregrina into Cartier to appraise it. He wasn’t recognized, and the police were called because they thought he had stolen it from the Yusupovs. Felix travels a lot with Irina and moves some of his possessions out of Russia ahead of the revolution. Rasputin, a monk, appears to have a lot of influence over the imperial family. (Empress Alexandra relies on Rasputin’s advice to treat her son Alexei’s hemophilia.) The imperial family leaves the palace and most of the royal jewelry collection and money, assuming they would return in a few months after the order was restored. Instead, Nicholas and his son surrender, and the imperial family is turned away by foreign governments, thus becoming prisoners within Russia. They are sent to a house in Siberia where they had some freedom and could smuggle some of their jewels out. The Provisional Government-which had reluctantly kept the family and protected them-falls, and the Bolsheviks rise to power. The family is ordered to move into the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg. The women sew their remaining jewels into their corsets, giving them some protection from gunfire during the execution. The treasures they had smuggled out through the monastery in two trunks are still missing. Albert Stopford helps Grand Duchess Vladimir recover some of her enormous jewelry collection. He dressed up as a palace worker to get in and collected as many jewels and as much cash as he could, then left Russia for England via Sweden with over 200 items; some of which will later be bought by Queen Mary and other European royals from Vladimir’s children-who sold them to support themselves while in exile. The Bolsheviks advance, and the remaining members of the Imperial family must leave Russia. Most of Felix’s jewelry and art collection remained in Russia and was confiscated by the Bolsheviks and publicly auctioned off along with the Imperial family jewels. The last Empress's two-piece crown: the top piece, the Nuptial Crown, was purchased by a US buyer and displayed at the Hillwood Museum in Washington, D.C. Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna hid two pillowcases full of jeweled objects designed by Faberge in the Swedish Embassy before leaving Russia. These were also auctioned off. Some important Russian imperial jewels end up with new British, American, and Romanian owners.

@@missf4681, I don't think the British royal family was "jealous" of the Russian royal jewels. The British royal family also has a significant collection of jewels and other precious items, so they were likely aware of the value and beauty of the Russian royal jewels but were not necessarily jealous. Queen Mary was OBSESSED with jewelry, but like many royals, she probably wasn't very practical with money. These were people who didn't have to work for money or figure out bills. They didn't even pick up things they dropped; servants picked up after them and did everything for them. Queen Elizabeth II was cautious with her jewelry choices when visiting Russia. She wore other sentimental pieces from her engagement instead of the imperial Russian ones she inherited from Queen Mary to avoid lingering grudges. The British and Russian royal families were family and spent time together. They were also heads of a nation that Britain was allied with during the war. The Romanovs had isolated themselves and were closer to gurus and kooks like Rasputin than their British relatives. The family couldn't communicate freely with pro-Monarchist groups while in confinement and seemed optimistic about their fate almost until the end. There is no evidence that European royals knew that the Bolsheviks would kill Tsar Nicholas II and his family. The execution of the Romanovs was carried out by a group of Bolshevik secret police, and the news of the death of Nicholas came first. The information about the ends of the rest of his family and servants was not made public until several months later. The British eventually sent the HMS Marlborough to rescue the remaining members of the Romanov family and put them up for free as guests in their palaces in Europe.

You don't understand Norwenska language, but the video says, and it can be confirmed by other sources, many in English, that the jewels of the fabulous Russian Imperial Treasure had different endings. Some were indeed stolen by the Bolsheviks (the Russian revolutionaries) and vanished. Others were taken out of Mother Russia by Noble families and sold in auctions. Some of those jewels were lawfully bought by the British Royal Family and Household. Certainly not stolen!

I think Russia will re-instate the monarchy, either just before Putin retires, or shortly after, and this time around it will be a strictly 'constitutional monarchy'. I also highly doubt that guy Dimitri (son of Maria, or whatever her name is) will be tsar either. It's going to have to be the parliament who re-writes the monarchy rules which, whoever ends up being tsar or, dare I say it, empress/tsarina, isn't going to have much (or any) say in the way it's done, either beforehand or afterwards.

It is always sad when things are destroyed for greed, or to prevent he history of the past to show future generations the past. The Russian Revolution lost a a wonderful chance at displaying if we history because of socialistic idealist. ISIS destroyed heritage of thousands of years for hate and ideals doomed to fail even if they had successfully won. History always looses. That is the shame of idealism over cultural history. Sadness , madness and loss are never a reason to destroy beauty and history.

I think it´s time for a bit of defense for King George VI. He did not refuse the Zar nor his family refuge the first time around. He had invited them for asylum, but the girls got sick and the trip postponed. Then when they were well enough to travel, it was to late, and George VI had changed his mind. Not to mention the landscape of who ruled Russia/Soviet at that time had changed. Not to mention: They had family all over Europe. Not just Britain. Why didn´t any of them offer asylum?

A fascinating European History Documentary. So as a child, I learned two other languages, besides English and I am content to listen and understand what I am able to from the other languages spoken in this documentary. For those that wish to have English subtitles, spend some time learning another language and who knows what else you may learn. Many opportunities exist on You Tube to learn another language for free! There are times I use these resources to keep up with my hearing understanding of the other languages that I learned. That also includes dialects, of which the English Language has some 450 in existence, around the world, in use today. I never could understand how it is, that the people of certain countries only speak one language and then expect the rest of the people in other countries to learn their language as well? And then how many other dialects of the English Language have you native speakers learned?

@Martin Doyle they initially had offered to rescue the tsar family, but private secretary Lord Stamfordham was worried that giving the Romanovs asylum would stoke the growing republican movement in Britain. The British ambassador Sir George Buchanan was then commanded to deliver the news to the Romanovs that the offer had been withdrawn. There still would have been time to rescue them at this point. They were basically abandoned to their fate.

I understand why people would feel as you do. But what I don’t understand is holding someone responsible for the actions that happened before they were born. The family was related to several leaders in several countries. Are you holding the relatives in those countries responsible also? Is there someone in your family tree that was considered to have made difficult decisions that effected others in a negative way. What if society held you responsible for what they did. Elizabeth Porter In the original post the writer makes a statement about the Queen of Britain. Not the government or the King or Queen Mary who bought several pieces of the famous jewels. There is also no record of exactly how much she paid for them. But if the history of Queen Mary is correct I doubt she paid the amount she agreed to at the point of sale. Just a small note. The writer does not specify which Queen of Britain they are talking about. In the documentary which also shows the present Queen wearing some of the pieces. On the information given I interpreted the statement to be about the present Queen. To understand what I meant about several countries could have helped the family of the last Tsar you would need to look up Christian lx . The King of Denmark, he had six children. Five became leaders in five different countries. He also known by the name “ The father-in-law of Europe “. His daughter was Maria Feodoronva ( Dagmar of Denmark). Empress of Russia. Her eldest son became the last Russian monarch. Dagmars family was in control of Denmark, Greece, United Kingdom, Russia and Hanover. Hanover was in a crises at the time of the needs of the Russian family. There is so much more history here. Things were completely different back then. If you don’t fully understand the past you can’t make harsh judgments in the present.

Yes, it’s sad that the Russian royalty didn’t serve their subjects well Yes, it’s sad that the Russian royals that escaped Russia and ended up having to sell their royal jewels for way blow cost to other wealthy people, including the British royals, HOWEVER - what about the jewels that were photographed by the revolutionaries and then went missing, never to be seen as they were again ... the last Russian royalty certainly didn’t deserve the ending they received. It was already a done deal that there would no longer be a monarchy ... imprison the Tsar and Tsarina, but killing the children (the son would have died anyway) was way over the line. Don’t blame the British for “stealing” any jewelry, but instead call them cheapskates

The Romanovs lived in great luxury and enormous wealth ….in sharp contrast to the serfs who were slaves and the poverty of poor in the Russian Empire! How could they not see how wrong they were …why not cut back and share a little more? It was just not the Romanovs….but the wealthy aristocrats also! No one needs palaces that large or that many jewels! In the end…the Romanovs and wealthy aristocrats lost it all !

@Martin Doyle I think you meant to say "person jewels" of the Romanovs, not the "Crown jewels", as the Crown jewels have always belonged to the State. And, more accurately, some of the jewels which the Romanovs - specifically, Maria Feodorovna's (Nicholas' mother) jewels were, in fact, items which belonged to the State. So, if Maria had have been successful in getting them out of Russia then she would have (in fact) been stealing jewels which officially belonged to the State.

Significant jewels made (usually from gems mined in Russia e.g. Imperial Crowns, Kokoshniks and other jewels worn when the royal family wore Court dress), were the property of the State. Peter the Great set up the Russian Crown Treasury in 1719. Btw, that kokoshnik which Queen Elizabeth wears (which Queen Mary bought from Maria Feodorovna, and then was passed down to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother) was in the possession of Maria Feodorovna when she fled Russia, and that kokoshnik was part of the official imperial jewels collection. So, in actual fact, the kokoshnik was taken and sold by Maria Feodorovna without the consent of the State!

@maria610421 There are a number of various European Royal families who have Faberge eggs which were (traditionally) given to them by either Maria Feodorovna and/or Nicholas and Alexandra at Easter, or whenever they visited. Queen Margrethe of Denmark has a few in her personal possession. Whenever Maria Feodorovna and Tsar Alexander visited Denmark, Maria would leave little Faberge eggs on each persons dinner plate! Since Maria and Queen Alexandra of England were sisters, you can imagine that Alexandra would have received a few of the Faberge eggs over quite a period of time. As such, those Faberge eggs have (obviously) been passed down the line to Queen Elizabeth.

Wonderfully made! My great- grandmother had in each of the families houses, a set of safes. Each colored to represent the Jewel inside. One red- for the rubies etc... I inherited a large portion of these jewels!

Most sad and interesting documentary of not only Jewels but regime change by the Russian Revolution. It reminded me of Jewels being involved in the onset of the French Revolution. If the English Royals were related to the Russians why didn't they go and save their Russian relatives. Why did they kill the poor girls, they were innocent weren't they??

Saras Watkin The girls were NOT the only young members of the family murdered: their cousins, the young Constantinovich branch were all young men and boys, a stair step of brothers, army cadets and very young, almost boy, soldiers. One of the brothers was a real rarity among Romanovs: he was an actual medical student, if not brand new doctor. All murdered either the same night (or the next ) as the Czar and his family were killed. Also killed with some of Constantinovich boys, at the same time and place, was the Czarina’s older sister, Elisabeth, who was at the time a nun. And within a few days of the Czar’s murder was that of his younger brother, Michael, in whose favor Nicholas had abdicated, making Michael the real “Last Czar.” There were old legends that when Michael II Romanov was crowned would be when Russia got a warm water port OR when the dynasty would collapse. I think though that last one wasn’t well thought through, if it really was real!

Stacy Thomas thank you for correcting me. Before the Great Schism, if I can remember, they were part of the Roman Catholics. During the Great Schism which from this time forward their leader did not recognize the Holy Father as their leader so they were no longer part of the Roman Catholic Church. We just don't have similar practice and dogma but one practice and dogma except they split from us. That's the main reason for Our Lady to appear at Fatima in 1917 and asked The Holy Father for the Consecration of Russia to Her Immaculate Heart of Mary because Our Lady loves so much the people of Russia. Apart from the Yaught: as we have seen by photos and letters all written in English. Their private family life was simple. None of the extravagance of Court. From photos and letters all in English . their amusements were much the same as mine.Anything to do with outdoor's boating, badminton or tennis, swimming.Hiking.they did have the splendid yaught ! Poor Michael of Kent he loved his russian ancestors he is the only royal who speaks russian. It was Queen Mary who bought jewels "to help the Family" One must not forget she suffered from being a poor cousin she never forgave all the non invitations!they can be a nasty lot among themselves you have no wealth you are forgotten.
