@@Blind_Hawk The Ukrainians have the advantage of coordination and eight years of preparation unmolested, so slightly different circumstances to that of the average Russian civilian. The way to topple Putin is assassination in some way, shape or form. Then his house of cards will collapse. Who knows what would replace him in the power vacuum though. A people's Gov or more likely another dictator or military guy who seizes the chance. It would be hard to do worse than Putin though.

As to the question about whether Russia is culturally appealing to foreigners, I am one of those foreigners with an answer. Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Pushkin, Gogol, Turgenev, Goncharov (and his creation, Oblomov) Chekhov, Gorky, Nabokov, Pasternak, Solzhenitsyn. And those are just writers. We could and should also list musical composers, visual artists, and many, many others. Russian cultural heritage is rich and magnificent. Culturally Russia is very appealing you're right and I think most foreigners wouldn't doubt that, also I still believe that the majority of Russians just want to live a peaceful life and in good relations with other countries, just being part of the international community. Politics is definitely the problem which makes Russia rather unappealing for foreigners even before the war and well also the fact that many Russians just don't really seem to care about their government or politics as long as they can live their life. The authoritarian style of leadership just makes it unattractive for the majority of people who live in democratic countries with more rights and more freedom. Also in regards to economy and trade Russia could be much more than the European gas station they are now. This authoritarian leadership just harms the development of Russia economically and it's potential for a broader trading lineup and it's also harming the international community and the image of Russia. I myself would have loved to visit St Petersburg, Moscow and the beautiful nature they have for sure, see the architecture, arts and get an impression of the russian way of live I'd also love to see Russia as a friendly political partner integrated in the EU just like any other EU member, but unfortunately over the past years all these political conflicts divided everyone at least in Europe more and more from all the positive Russia has to offer and all the potential it would have. Sadly now everything peaked in this cruel war which is just to condemn and also feeds a bad reputation for Russia for years to come even though the Russian people aren't to blame or are they at least in part? I really don't know. Some might be brainwashed, some might think just like Putin, some might just be ignorant towards politics and well some just would like to get rid of Putin and corruption just like everyone else in the west. I really don't know what the majority of Russians thinks and supports and that's kind of the problem for me as a foreigner, I see the actions and lies of their government which represents them internationally as a country and I just can't really make out how much Russians support their government or at least tolerate it. Isn't that a part of culture too? And overshadows it all the positive aspects of Russian culture? I really don't know. All I wish for is peace in Europe.

I know it's harder to put it together, but it would be also very useful to interview western people about Russians. As there is a big talk of "russophobia" it would be interesting to understand if it is or not a real thing. Personally, as a western man, I am not experiencing anything of this sort. I am against the war and against whoever tries to hide the truth, whether it's Russia, Ukraine, USA, EU, China or whatever. But Russian people is just people as any other and Russian culture and literature have been a great example for Europe. Basically we are not enemies, but some Governments would like us to be in order to reach their dirty goals.
@nydydn
@nydydn 2 жыл бұрын
but it really depends on what one understands by Russophobia. The most popular ideology in Russia, which allows Putin to be in power, but at the same time it is also carefully cultivated by Putin, is that Russia is a country with borders that never end, protector of true Christianity, that must reconquer its political and spiritual birthplace, meaning Kiev and Crimea. I personally strongly disagree with this ideology, therefore I strongly disagree with the worldview of the majority of Russian people. Am I a Russophobe for strongly disagreeing with the view of most Russian people about the identity of Russia itself? Most Russian people would say yes, and by that definition, they'd be right. My view is not rare in Europe, so if these Russian people would come in contact with people from the EU, they are likely to find out that what that their dear Putin was right, EU is Russophobe by Russian standards. Russian conscious seeks respect above all from the rest of the world. Respect is earned, never given or taken. Unfortunately, Russia has only dictatorships and suffering to show for the past century. Even the technological advancements during the cold war came at costs which were too high for the Russian people, and even so, the advancements were done in spite of the regime, not due to it, and the supremacy of the western technology stands to show it. There is nothing fundamentally blocking Russians from being on par with the most advanced nations, apart from their decisions to value a loyalty based system and despise rule based systems. Even so, I wouldn't act in any negative way towards a Russian before I know their views, but if our views don't align, I'm keeping distance and that's enough for most Russians to label me a Russophobe. We are kidding ourselves to believe that Putin alone is at fault for everything and with his departure from power, sooner or later, everything would be fine. It wasn't when Putin came instead of Yeltsin, it wasn't after fall of USSR, it wasn't after Stalin died, or Lenin before him, it wasn't even after the imperial Russia collapsed, it won't be different this time, because the idea of Russia with borders that never ends and worldwide protector of true Christianity is alive and carried on, regardless of who holds Kremlin.

I have always admired the Russian PEOPLE and have had the pleasure of working with them for many years here in America. They for the most part (99.9%) are a hard working and straight forward people that appreciate the simple things in life. Like friends and family as I grew up in the country rather than the city I understand them and their opinions I think you have a great thing going with this channel because you don't ask questions of your guests that could get them in any trouble with the current government restrictions (on free speech) . The group in this video are very honest and though a bit guarded in responses do all the same clearly speak from their hearts. Thank you for the great job and please do remember to thank them for being them. You ask for ideas and I don't know if you have the capabilities, but, it might be fun to ask a series of questions like you have here to the inner city people and then go out a ways into the surrounding country side (maybe 60 or so KM) and ask the same questions in the same order and see if there were any major differences in the answers. Like I said before having worked along side and with the Russian people in the hospitality business for a great many years I would hazard a guess that the answers might be very close to the same. I hope the Russian government and Ukraine can come together soon so no more lives will be lost on either side. The Ukrainians for protecting their country and the young Russian forces that are scared and not getting the whole truth as to why they are doing what they are doing there. Sorry that is a straight forward as I can put it without pointing fingers at either country

@@ktt7516 Bad things happen in war. Remember how that poor soldier ended up as a captive to be brutalised by a sadist. He could've stayed at his base, if men in suits made different decisions. If you think torturing a captive to death is something only Ukrainians are capable of think again. There is online footage of Russian Wagner group mercenaries in Syria beating a man's limbs to a pulp with a sledgehammer, removing his arms and head with a spade and setting his corpse on fire. His crime was deserting the army he was conscripted into, nothing more. War is terrible, and it gives the opportunity for evil people to do evil things. As for 14000 people of Russian origin that's just not true. War in Donbass had ~14k casualties yes. 10k of those were soldiers, about half from each side. Furthermore it is simply not true that every civilian casualty was caused by the Ukrainian government forces. The separatists shot down MH-17, killing hundreds of civilians. The line is blurry on what it means to be 'of Russian origin'. If you mean simply growing up speaking Russian then a whole lot of Ukrainians fit that criteria, including Zelenskyy. If you mean supporting separatism and joining the Russian federation then it's less common. In the War in Donbass ultra-nationalist militias did a lot of fighting on both sides. Sometimes they brutalised their captives, sometimes they brutalised civilians they thought supported the other side. All of this is well documented. One thing that's for sure is that this war is not going to lead to better ethnic relations in Ukraine. Just a more bitter divide and more bloodshed.

No. Is it necessary to hold Kiev suburbs to deal with nazi regiment stationed in Mariupol? Debatable. And about Donbass: yes a lot of people died there. Personally I think Russia had to let them in as refugees back then in 2014 - as Poland did today with Ukrainians. But do you know exact numbers? In 2014 in Donetsk People's Republic died 2546 people in 2020 were killed 44 - 39 servicemen and 5 civilians Ceasefire did work. How many people died there in a month passed? Who knows.

Look at its wonderful culture - its literature and music: Pushkin; Dostoevsky; Tolstoy; Turgeniev; Tolstoy; Gorky; Trotsky (killed by Stalin in Mexico like Litvinenko in and others in UK); Mandelstam; Akhmatova: Pasternak (Nobel Prize); Solzhenitsyn (Nobel Prize); Chekhov (my God Chekhov is virtually accepted alongside Shakespeare in British theatre cannon); Nabokov......Mussorsky; Glinka; Borodin; Rimsky-Korsakov; Rakmaninov; Tchaikovsky.....I could go on to Art - Kandinsky! I could go to film. My God what agreat culture. But how many of these figures were respressed by their own Governments - whether Tsarist; USSR or Putinist. I agree with what you say especially about Chekhov & the British theatre. Maybe it's me but modern Russia doesn't seem to punch it's weight culturally yet because of Russia's amazing cultural heritage when the Cold War ended many publisher's went to Russia thinking all these masses of amazing books, play's, classical music had been written which had never seen the light of day because of the Communist regime. Sadly culturally Russia doesn't really express itself globally which is a shame because I feel as a people they have plenty to say that's worth listening to but under Putin certain word's & views are illegal. Perhaps, the freedom of speech and the pressure of the camera would mean that people would give an underdeveloped opinion instead. 🤔 Also, if people in the UK or US would be asked about Iraq at the time of the invasion I think people would also have a sense of frustration and hopelessness (millions marched against it). Our governments (even democratic ones) can fail us and as citizens it often feels like we have limited influence. We were just able to vote them out at the next ballot. This is really great how you show such diversity of opinion, but a common thread that runs clearly through it all is a palpable intentionality, anxiety, and caution about speaking one’s mind. Western countries are nothing like this. The path forward for the beautiful Russian culture: Get more comfortable in general with speaking your mind. Peace to all

The slightest knowledge of Russian history will tell you how unlikely is the "path forward" you suggest for Russia. Russians have always supported strong, repressive and brutal governments. Self-government is anathema for most Russians.

@@SBCBears but is that really true? Just because they have a history of tyranny doesn't necessarily mean they prefer that. Freedom and democracy are difficult to create and maintain and not all countries succeed. Even in America we had Trump try to overturn an election and he may try it again. My main impression from these interviews is how timid and disenfranchised the average Russian appears. It's like they're not really citizens of Russia, but just happen to be living there and along for the ride. Not entitled even to express their opinion about their own country. From the perspective of someone living in a liberal democracy, this is really sad.

it's because most Russians life a harder life than westerns. there is less time to think about these things. also a real Rus is very optimistic. even about their own political system.

@xovers I don't understand how this isn't seen as problematic though. This explains why Russia has failed for decades. They will continue to fail while the people actively choose to be blindly ignorant. To each their own I suppose but Russians who claim they're "apolitical" also can't complain about sanctions as such as it's partially their fault that everything is happening imo.

Ha. "....just happen to be living there and along for the ride"... That´s a briliant description! Actually that´s how you feel when there´s very little youcan do to change things... and you don´t believe anything can change. 1. Everything is like in any country. There is truthful news, and there is under filters. In fact, it's always funny to me that people say that we only have propaganda. No, there are different kinds of news. And I watch 200 news every day and I can say that in Europe, the USA and Ukraine they are also lying. 2. Of course yes. We can watch any news anywhere.
