Zorba is the name of the main character in the novel by Kazantzakis "Zorba the Greek" which was made into a film and Antony Quinn was acting the Zorba. The dance is sirtaki and is a choreographic variation of "Hasapiko" and Hasaposerviko" derivative of the ancient dance "sirtos" and the music was composed by Mikis Theodorakis. Both the music and the dance were specifically made for the needs of the film. The name "sirtaki" was given to the dance by Jacques Suissa to promote the film in France. The music and the dance were very catching and became famous all over the world and sometimes is also called the Zorba dance. It is even danced in Japan among other countries.

Sirtaki is not a traditional dance but a mix of two different traditional dances chasapiko slow and chasapiko fast. Mikis theodorakis made this mix and called it "sirtaki" for the movie "zorba the greek" with Anthony Quinn. From then every teacher make his own choreography with movies and steps even from other traditional dances. Kisses from Greece

@angelossofianidis10594 жыл бұрын
I saw a lot of wrong Information in here, so lets clarify some things. syrtaki's name is combination of the basic greek dance called "syrtos" and the cretan end of the surnames "-aki" - syrtos + - aki = syrtaki. Actually, it is NOT a traditional greek dance (it was created for the needs of a movie based on traditional moves of other greek dances) Zorbas was a historical person but he has nothing to do with this dance. Syrtaki named internationally "Zorbas' song" due to the movie "Zorbas the Greek".

Hi. I don't speak Russian but allow me to give you some information about Greek music. Greece as you know is a small country in geographical and population terms. But the music it has produced and still produces is vast in different genres and quantity. In terms of variety, it spans from opera written in the Ionian islands (Corfu, Zante, etc) during the 1800s through to Balkan folk using wind instruments such as the clarinette and some brass instruments. The reason why Greek music is so varied is because it received influences from the East and West. North and South. This is partly because of its geographical position but also the fact that Greeks are a sea fearing nation and they kept bringing trends back home from other parts of the world. In 1924 after a population exchange between Greece and Turkey, brought to Greece one million greek speaking displaced people from Asia Minor. They had a big impact on the music traditions of Greece. They brought to us the Bouzouki which is an oversized mandolin which produces this characteristic sound everyone recognises as Greek. After World War II, as the country found its feet again, National Music Conservatoires were established in all towns and cities of Greece. At a small monthly fee, the boys and girls of the nation could go and learn how to play an instrument, read and write music. It is not yet recognised in Greece how important the National Music Conservatoire was in the making of the Greek music of today. In my opinion the NMC has pushed the post War generations of musicians/ composers to an other level. In the 60's and the 70's we had composers such as Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Hatzidakis, Stavros Xarhakos, Mimis Plessas, Giannis Spanos, Dio Savopoulos and many others who made greek music known across the world. They put music to lyrics of big Greek and foreign poets such as Kavafis, Kavadias, Neruda, Eleftheriou, L. Papadopoulos and Gatsos. In the 1990s 2000s the influences came from everywhere. S. America, The Caribbean, N. America, Europe and the Middle East. The world of music is repeating its self in Greece. There is also very low quality music produced as well. I do come across it occasionally in Greece but mainly when I travel to the neighbouring countries. Surprisingly enough! Like the one you show on your channel: Κωνσταντίνος Αργυρός - Ξημερώματα. Outrageously bad commercial rubbish... If you want to listen to quality Greek music you will find it on some excellent Greek web radios. I will put the links below: diesi.gr www.melodia.gr/ hroma.gr/ I like your channel, Keep up the good work.
