I agree with your comment (along with the importance of the welfare of my loved ones and friends.) Unfortunately I can imagine my life without freedom of choice. It's unpleasant to imagine this. I hate this thought. It is a problem that comes closer to reality each day.

As an answer to your last story..I overly focused on work when young because support of a family would be totally dependent on myself...Now that I am old I realized I should have focused more on family.

translating words that you don't know when you want to write something and then use them in your writing or speech is a great way to learn and memorize words. Good luck!

Спасибо за урок, Настя! 😊👍 I am confused about this sentence from the short story: 'Он думает что самое важное в жизни - это работа.' I don't understand why самое and важное are neuter if жизни and работа are feminine. 🤔 Also, is 'жизни' as used here in plural form, or is it in the prepositional case form because it follows the 'в' preposition? 🤔 I have been trying to work this out in Wiktionary but sometimes it's not clear when there is more than one option for a particular word ending!

The first sentence of the Short Story ... it translates as "My boyfriend not want me (to) listen." Nastya SPOKE the words in Russian BEFORE writing them on the board and I intuited the correct translation: "My boyfriend doesn't want to listen to me." However as soon as I SAW the sentence written, my (English-oriented mind) translated it differently. Therefore the meaning of the sentence changes: "My boyfriend not want me to listen ..." (to what?) Not listen to music? Not listen to propaganda? Not listen to friends? Or perhaps not listen ... to his private conversations? In English, by changing the order of the words, it changes the meaning of the sentence. This also happens in Russian, but it doesn't change the meaning of a sentence as much as it does in English. (There are exceptions). The flexibility of Russian sentence structure takes time to get used to. This sentence when viewed in isolation - it can be ambiguous. Fortunately, the meaning of most sentences can be understood in relation to an overall conversation or topic.

@@maraj8215 Hmmm. That's true of idioms. However, I do find some Russian sentences ambiguous when read in isolation of other context. If I don't take the literal meaning, than naturally, the sentence is open to interpretation. That leads to guessing the intended meaning. Most of the time, it wouldn't matter, but sometimes it could be unfortunate to arrive at the wrong conclusion! I'll edit and add this ... for example, in regards to this sentence ... the intended meaning is that the woman is complaining about her boyfriend not listening to her. So it is a complaint. Viewed the other way, it can be read as advice. "My boyfriend not want me (to) listen " ... to what? Or it could be a suggestion. He thinks it could be better to ignore (something). Or it could be more sinister - he is warning her not to listen to ... something! As I mentioned, as soon as there are other sentences, the ambiguity can be cleared, but viewed on it's own?

@Lily Rose I get your point. Russian language has its peculiarities and one of them is the flexible order of the words in a sentence. You can say я люблю тебя я тебя люблю without changing radically the meaning of the sentence. But in English, you don't say in the last example of я тебя люблю "I you love " , that's what I mean with literal translation. Another example: меня никогда не научили (x)... in English it's translated as "I was never taught (X)", you don't say "to me never they taught me (x), that's what I mean. Don't worry anyway, I don't know what your level is but when I was a real beginner I found it strange when I attempted to translate lyrics literally (one of my favorite singers is Russian) it took me a while to get used to this flexibility in word order

We can't translate the sentence as "My boyfriend not want me (to) listen." because меня is the direct object of the sentence. so it is obvious he doesn't want to listen HER.
