In this episode of RUST 101 we're taking a look at the farming system. Particularly how to set up an efficient farm, how to deal with the current issue regarding water supply and how to effective improve your crops genes.
Hopefully this helps get people going with the RUST farming 2.0 update.

I just did way too much testing and now I think I understand how it works. Something I was confused about were the rates regarding water catchers (WC). There is the rate it collects water which is quite slow at a rate of 3 ml/minute (0.05 ml/s) and then there is the maximum discharge rate or the flow rate out which is 6 ml/s. Multiple WCs can be connected in series/daisy chained to increase the water collection rate. The total rate water is collected is the sum of the rates of each water catcher; however, this has no impact on the maximum cap of 6 ml/s output. Based on these rates, in order to have a continuous 6 ml/s water supply you would require 120 WCs. Okay, that is obviously ridiculous but those are the numbers. I'm not saying you need to have CONTINUOUS 6 ml/s supply to run a farm. Now that we understand collecting water, let's look at the transfer of water between the water source to the planters. The range a single sprinkler can water is 3x3 large planters. A sprinkler split's it's water output between all the planters within it's range. For example, if you pass 100 ml through a sprinkler to a single planter the planter will contain 150 ml of water. If you have 3 planters under the sprinkler, each one will receive 50 ml for a total of 150 ml. Yes, I know I said 100 ml input to a sprinkler and the result was 150 ml total in both cases which brings me to the next point. After the first 5 seconds and then every 10 seconds after that of continuous sprinkler watering, the planter water level is increased. Let's call this 5 or 10 second interval a watering tick. The first watering tick is at 5 seconds of continuous watering and then at 15s, 25s, 35s etc. If the sprinkler runs for less than 5 seconds (runs out of supply), no water is transferred to the planter and it is wasted (evaporates?). To rephrase, every 10th second the sprinkler is on, 30 ml of water is distributed to each planter in range. You would expect it to be 20 ml / 10 s but for whatever reason it is 30 ml. For this reason, it is better to use one sprinkler instead of multiple if you are have a slower collection rate in order to hit that 5 second threshold or make sure keep the sprinkler off until enough water is stored up. Let's look at water rates required by the plants. Assume each plant requires 5 ml/min, 9 plants/planter, 4 planters/block. Then the plant water intake is 36 plants * 5 ml/min/plant = 3 ml/s. Remember do multiply by the magic 1.5 conversion factor from source water to planter water resulting in 2 ml/s water source which happens to be one sprinkler continuously operating! If the rate of water into planter == rate water consumed then the saturation will be balanced in equilibrium and remain at 0% so need an initial dump of water to saturate the planter. (This is an assumption). Putting it all together we know we need 1 sprinkler operating at 2 ml/s/block. We also know that a small WC produces 0.05 ml/s. So the number of small WCs for continuous operation = (2 ml/s) / 0.05 ml/s/WC = 40 small water catchers. Well shit that's unrealistic. And actually I just realized when watering 4 planters, each watering tick the 30 ml is divided by the 4 planters which is 7.5 ml/planter/tick but they round down to 7 ml so it's only 28 ml instead of 30 you would get with one planter. This means it's 93% efficient due to this rounding and results in a new total of 43 small water catchers required for continuous watering of 1 sprinkler or 1 block. Okay so what is the solution then because you probably don't want 43 water catchers. Get as many as you can and string them together and run it to a water barrel (optional) while you're offline or doing other stuff let the water collect and then turn it on and you're good to go. It really is unrealistic to leave the water running 100% of the time. I think having 5 or 10 small water catchers would be reasonable depending on how long you spend farming and how large your farm is. Let me know if this makes sense or if I made a mistake. I did test it and ~43 water catches was the equilibrium point. I don't know why I spent like the last 5 hours researching and writing this lol. Love your videos. You make the best of electrical/farming videos. TLDR: String a bunch of small water catchers together and let them collect a reserve before turning on sprinklers. Use one sprinkler per 4 large planters as Malonic said. Fun fact: You can put key and code locks on planters but can't lock them.

Get ready for the Great Wall of Text. Scroll all the way down if you'd like to see the section describing incoming Farming 2.0 and Fluid IO additions / changes and plans. > _Let's call this 5 or 10 second interval a watering tick_ *The devs call every 10 seconds a 'splash' in reference to Sprinklers. Yes, it's 30ml/splash currently* but it used to be 20 and 10ml/splash. There's no 5 second 'tick'. Only 10 seconds. i.imgur.com/0d2FVAV.png Initially sprinklers on the private _rust-reboot/main/sprinkler_ branch were set with 10ml of locally stored water on the entity itself and they also used to decay 5 HP per splash (as indicated from source above and below). Adam / Jarryd changed it to 10ml/splash when they initially _merged from sprinkler and farming2 to main branch_ (staging), then doubled to 20ml/splash, then increased it again to 30ml/splash and removed the decay feature based on staging branch testing (which I was a part of) and this is probably why the deployable sources are still draining based on the older 20ml/splash rate (i.e. never readjusted the source drain rate based on the new Sprinkler output rate). Or it could be left that way intentionally as a way to help minimize the need for a shitload of water / help players conserve water. commits.facepunch.com/354696 commits.facepunch.com/361237 commits.facepunch.com/361632 > _Remember do multiply by the magic 1.5 conversion factor from source water to planter water_ Correct. The 1.5 source to sprinkler output ratio is right due to the aforementioned that I explained. *So currently a single Sprinkler will output 180ml/min, but only deplete 120ml/min from its source. Every splash the Sprinkler outputs 30ml, its source drains 20ml. 50% EXTRA / FREE WATER.* Btw, the deployable water sources apparently tick every 2 seconds based on in-game observation and commits from the devs. commits.facepunch.com/361623 ----------------------------------- _Some notes:_ - *Sprinklers and Ceiling Lights (as of the Easter event patch) have a range of 2 walls high over growables in planters* (Sprinklers and Ceiling Lights were previously capped at a single wall height Area of Effect). i.imgur.com/cOz3ICG.png Here's the bug report I posted last Thursday that prompted the above change, listed as Bug 1 in my report. Bug 2 (the Sun + Ceiling Light during sunrise / sunset bug) still exists in-game today. Currently Alistair and Adam are looking into it if they can find a performance efficient way to rectify it. www.reddit.com/r/playrust/comments/ftu3fw/farming_20_update_bug_reporting_megathread/fmaflh1/ - *Over-watering is a mechanic not many know about (in addition to under-watering) and like many details in new content for Rust, it isn't mentioned in the Devblog.* Your growables will take a water saturation penalty (as if under-watered) if you max out your planters water saturation level. *The optimum water level is set to about 80% of max (6000 - 8000) but these specific parameters are set to change based on the commits shown below in the incoming updates section.* i.imgur.com/ycSLC9Q.png With this in mind, the Sprinklers are indeed NOT meant for fully saturating your planters like most of the lazy people think; it is meant for topping off / maintaining the optimum water level for your growables as they consume water from the planter. You DO need to continue manually dumping 4000ml (from a Water Jug) twice per Large Planter if starting from 0. The incoming additions / changes to the Farming 2.0 and Fluid I/O system will mitigate some of this to a degree however. www.reddit.com/r/playrust/comments/ftu3fw/farming_20_update_bug_reporting_megathread/fmegcmu/ ----------------------------------- _The following is incoming as early as May's update:_ - *Sea / Lake / River Water Pump, Water Desalinator, and Fluid Combiner:* commits.facepunch.com/361957 commits.facepunch.com/362059 commits.facepunch.com/362063 - *Fluid Switch/Pump will output audio when on:* commits.facepunch.com/362221 _Farming 2.0 Buffs incoming:_ - *Lowered optimal water saturation amount for planter boxes* commits.facepunch.com/362006 - *Increased growth and yield gene effectiveness* commits.facepunch.com/362307 - *Increased minimum temp* commits.facepunch.com/362308 ----------------------------------- _The following is planned or being considered:_ - *Fertilizer bombs* www.reddit.com/r/playrust/comments/ftr43v/farming_20_update_devblog/fm8oadx/ - *Sprinklers causing WET STATUS to players within it's Area of Effect* www.reddit.com/r/playrust/comments/ftr43v/farming_20_update_devblog/fm8sq3i/ - *Planter Water state sensor to aid in automation* commits.facepunch.com/358116 commits.facepunch.com/358295 - *Possibility of switching existing and new fuels (Crude Oil, LGF, Diesel) over to Fluid I/O resource entities like Water is; requiring a container to carry / transport it; Modular Vehicles may spearhead the change and utilize it first* commits.facepunch.com/334714 commits.facepunch.com/361694 commits.facepunch.com/361772

I think it is better to plant 4 wild seeds in the corners of each planter in the beginning in order to have a greater variety of plants to chose good genetics from. But the crossbreeding part itself is still very hard. I prefer to plant as much wild seeds as possible and be lucky in finding a good seed and use that one for the wipe. I'm happy if I have a pumpkin seed that uses 5ml per minute and gives 4 pumpkins as yield.
@Malonik

Yeah it's definitely better to plant more if you can and doing it in the corners obviously means it won't crossbreed them.

I think what would be especially helpful is to watch you do this from start to finish. I understand the principles behind this, but if I wanted to make the perfect hemp clone -- one that produces an extremely high yield at a fast grow rate -- it's hard for me to figure that out exactly, considering there are so many genetic variations. And I'm confused about how much water to use and when. (Sometimes it seems like a large planter can have *too* much water, especially in the early stages of the plant life). Thanks for posting this video, it's definitely given me something to think about, but I'm struggling to put it into practice. (It also doesn't help that I have very limited time to play).
@Malonik
@Malonik 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! Definitely doesn't help that you have limited time in a game like rust lol. The only issue with showing the full process is that if you're wanting the exact right genes it can take a long ass time. Like a couple of hours per harvest and you'll need to do probably 5ish or so to get it right. That being said I do have an alternative that's actually pretty damn good especially if you're limited on time. So skip trying to get the genetics right. Instead just plant a ton of seeds straight into the ground. This one harvest will require more manual effort with watering and such but the seeds won't crossbreed because they aren't in a planter. So keep an eye out and find the one that lines up with what you're after. It may not be perfect, like 3 G's instead of 2 or whatever you're aiming for but it'll be a lot better than trying to perfect them in a planter and saves you about 10 hours lol. Clone that one and use it to populate your farm. Because their genes will always be identical you'll have those really good genes across your whole farm. As for the water the rough guide is to keep your water levels between 6k and 8k. That's the sweet spot so that you are giving them enough water to be happy but not so much that you're oversaturating them. My auto sprinkler circuit is particularly handy for this as you just have to play around with the timing to suit your plants needs and it does the rest.

Great video! Really looking forward to more videos and your in-depth genetics guide. Honestly I would love to watch a full series of you playing on a live server with a focus on farming. Gathering the materials, getting the seeds, building the base, light pvp/rp, and maybe even opening up a food shop. I ran a potato shop on Hapis for a wipe and the attention it brought was hilarious. I even had a competitor at a different spot on the map and got into a trade war. I don't quite understand the genetic set up at 5:45 though. First off you plant one potato in the center instead of the four corners, which would allow you to check 4 clones without risk of crossbreeds instead of 1. I also don't understand how intertwining the strains as you do in the video yields better clones; but I'll have to experiment with this myself. At first blush I'd imagine that red genes would just take over the entire plot. This would be an amazing method if this just works naturally!

Aww thanks! I did contemplate streaming the wipe we just finished because we basically did everything you said however it was Mals Farm which sold all of your farming and fresh produce needs lol. Last time I tried streaming though we got stream sniped hard and they messed with wipe day considerably. The crossbreeding here isn't the best method, it's just the most simple and easiest to implement. Really each cycle just weeds out more and more negative genes without focusing on trying to control your genes too much. I'll be diving real deep into genetics in my upcoming advanced genetics guide. I'm going to fully explain how to control the genes and manipulate them. That one is only for those that are extremely keen on farming lol.

Great content and explanations my dude. The kicker for me is, why go through all the effort when the server will wipe - along with your super seeds? What possible benefits could going through such effort for food yield, when monuments and trashpiles have food boxes, wild animals or tasty nakeds. With such options for food- why bother? I can imagine it adding a bit more survival elements, but it seems to be more maintenance and jobs to do to keep you on the platform, as opposed to enriching the gaming experience. I could be wrong, and they have said the amount of food in the wild will lower, but tbh - if this was the only means of getting food (or if that’s the goal), I think it would be too much of a pain in the arse and people would just med themselves or multi-bag / die / respawn with more health / pick up stuff. What’s your thoughts?
@euancaskie2251
@euancaskie2251 4 жыл бұрын
At the moment there is little point. There is, as you said, so much food in the wild that you can be easily sustained from supermarket and rivers. However once they start to minimise the amount of available food out in the open this will become more useful Also this is pretty extreme you can easily get it done with a few water catchers and just one planter for a small setup. I guess this is mainly for base bitches rather than the PVP chads. One last thing that I'd quite like for you to keep hush hush but 10 corn sells for 10 scrap at bandit camp... Very few people notice / use this. Made a farm with 2 of these "farm blocks" 8 total with 9 slots meaning 72 corn each producing 5-6 corn I managed to get around 380 scrap per harvest. Each harvest is approximately 1 hour... Ran it for an entire day ended the day with around 3000 scrap and I barely even left my base only went to go to bandit. If you had a dedicated farm like I'm going to set up you can easily hit 1000 scrap / hour. You can't hit those numbers doing oil where the chance of loosing it all + more is a lot higher. More fun granted but this is imo the new meta when it comes to getting scrap. Let's just wait until zergs find out about this
@Malonik

To be honest I was expecting them to severely change the water and food consumption rates. However their long term plan for the new farming is to drop a second tier of recipes. So you'll be able to cook the normal stuff or eat the veges raw but there will be recipes to cook meals like stews. Eating those will be way better than normal food and possibly even have bonus effects. Once they add that I think farming will be essential. For now it's a different and fun way to have an endless supply of food. Plus if your group has a base bitch like me then it gives them something to play with lol.

@@Malonik I totally agree with the sentiments in the comments above, and that for those who are already hanging around the base [or in need of something to do at night] - it fills the gap. The thing that gets me though: How intimidating is Rust becoming for new players? It sounds simplistic to set up... but I imagine that each of us has many hours in game - where - as I alluded too slightly in my first comment - it seems like its something to add retention of players. Personally, I'd of thought a chicken coup and an apple tree would've sufficed. Already have both chickens and apples in game, all you'd need is apple seeds to grow a tree and a bp for a chicken coup and the option to capture a chicken [maybe even a chicken trap]. Electricity is slowly being accepted, but I feel that many still dont bother or hire a base bitch [like us haha], where it's just as simplistic [if you have a diagram or if you're an electrician] - but I guess I'm just confused trying to understand the direction they want to take rust [as a game]. Is this a step towards greater realism [of survival]? How real is it when you're working the land and a zerg of chads swarm you with Ak-sets on day 1 of wipe? Like - theres quite a few problems preventing emersion with rust that are developer side which could do with that extra bit of work, so I just see the introduction of things like this... a bit frivilous. But as you say, its only as it is or now [food options], and I'm sure people will adjust to this - but I always struggle to think of how a new player can just pick up and play/enjoy the game.
@Malonik

@@ComeRee See I don't see it as intimidating for new players. Yes RUST has definitely evolved over the years into questionably almost an entirely different game from where we started in legacy. That being said playing rust is easy and not complicated. Being good at certain aspects of rust is complicated. So hopefully I think this won't deter or stop new players. Hell look at games like day z. Starting out there as a new player your first few days if figuring out how to not starve or die from infection lol. New players to rust start with a much smaller scope of the game where as those of us that have been playing forever think there's so much to learn because we know everything. Hell a new players big goals are usually things like how do I get a spear or how do I get stone lol. Plus they're designing the farming system in a way that gives you bonuses for using it more so than punishing you for not. You can stay happily fed from animals and food crates but once tier 2 recipes come in you'd be missing out on bonuses if you don't learn farming. Still totally playable without that knowledge. Also wtf since when was corn a major commodity for scrap trade!? Jesus now I'm gonna have to hide my corn farm lol.

Fastest way for me to gather water is to just go to bandit camp and buy an inventory worth of water jugs, then go to a river or freshwater swamp, fill them all up, then dump them all into 3+ chained water barrels. For watering I set up an automatic sprinkler system according to www.rustrician.io/?circuit=ea3ed6fe4c91bcb0991fb775ef614741 I haven't figured out yet what the ideal watering time is. Anyhow, excellent video. Looking forward to see what the various yield rates are.

You need more finite control over each large planter's saturation level. For instance pumpkins will only reach 100% saturation themselves if the planter saturation is between 6500/9000 and 8000/9000. You also need more seperation and control over the early crossbreeds from each seed. Try having cooperative genotypes in pairs with singular gene receptor seeds.

The gene sequence in rust is 3 pairs. 1.1/2.2/3.3 Getting matching green letters in pair positions is optimal. There are red and green genes. The red genes are negatives, wheras the green genes are positives. Y = Yield G=Growth H=Hydration. for the green genes.

Imho, water collectors are too bad. I had to make a lot of them, and connect all of them to one, that will provide enough water to my little farm. Not only I've to find water collectors that has 1% spawn chance in boxes, but they are not doing even they job properly I think they need a slight buff, since you don't even have them in the basic knowledge, so you have to study them by finding or gumbling with workbench lvl1. Also Large water collectors are definitely too large? I couldn't place it anywhere in my roof even if there was space for it Idk.. I love farming and I never been more in love with Electricity and pumping fluids, but oof it's a little bit disappointing when the problem is W A T E R Like oof, I'm doing genetics breeding, planting, collecting them before they ripen and I do still have to care about water for the most part? Also I heard that they are buffing the water collector's although I don't know how much. Oh and you can't put large collector's on your base, they have to go on the ground. 4 planters per farm block is a waste of water since sprinklers give out 30ml per 10 seconds and 30 is not divisible by 4, so you will get 28ml/10s with the same water usage (effectively wasting 2ml/10seconds). You will be better off with 2 or 6 planters per farm block.

@@Malonik Yeah, a bit of an overkill 😂But as far as water economy goes, a single sprinkler consumer 20ml/10s but outputs 30ml/10s (free water?), so you save more by using sprinklers. Also, if you do the math, a single sprinkler provides 180ml/minute, which means a single sprinkler can provide water for 4x planters with standard water-hungry plants (5ml/minute) or for 3.33x planters full of water-hungry plants (6ml/minute). But with the mentioned info above plater count per sprinkler, I would say that 1 sprinkler per 3 planters is the sweet spot.

Hey Mal! Hope you have a moment to answer a few questions. Saw someones farm base earlier today and was inspired. Im typically solo and sometimes have a duo. We mostly want to start farming berries for the scrap teas. I'm wondering what size farm you would recommend for a solo/duo who just want the highest tier scrap tea every so often to farm barrels? I saw another youtubers video that says 2 large planter boxes should cover 1 pure scrap tea every hour but we dont need one every hour, but we could do with some of the other teas as well so im thinking maybe a 3x3 with a foundation out the center? Or maybe a 2x1 with a lowered foundation on the side? Just curious what you would recommend. Also, what are all the garage doors for? The farm base I saw had 3-4 on the back side and im unsure what they are used for. Look forward to a response.

Can you create a pumpkin that gives more health per pumpkin or hemp that gives more than 10 cloth? What is the point in these "super" crops? Just how fast they grow?
@Malonik
@Malonik 4 жыл бұрын
Currently the main things you can alter are how well it grows, how much grows per crop and how fast it grows. So you can't do more health (although they're working on tier 2 recipes which will have effects like that) but you can do more yield. Crops in a planter take about 1.5 - 2 hours, crops planted on the ground take about 5 if they don't die from bad conditions. You can speed the planted time up with more G genes but I don't have exact figures on how much that boosts the speed yet.
@FlammableB
@FlammableB 3 жыл бұрын
Good tutorial but I wonder something. Never used to make farm bases and etc. As I know growing full crop at maximum age/yield takes 1-2hours... so what's the point to experiment with crops. You wait for 2 hours for a bunch of pumpkins/corn/etc when you can walk the river and find a lot... Only I guess it's useful if you wanna grow more berries and teas later...
@Malonik
@Malonik 3 жыл бұрын
It's useful for both, you're right you can just go get them from the river. However you'll get a higher yield and faster grow on pumpkins in your farm versus the river. Plus you don't have to contend with other people stealing them. Personally I like to focus mostly on teas (you should check out my recent tea time video) and once in a while if we're running low on food just do a food plant across my farm. Usually sorts us out for a good while and then i just go back to teas lol.

Next is an automated watering system and then I'm doing a full on advanced genetics guide. I wanted to ease people into it rather than overwhelming them with information. As it currently stands the advanced genetics guide is likely going to be like 15 straight minutes of convoluted mathematics and I thought that might be a bit of a downer for those trying to connect a hose lol. So TLDR sorry the genetics info has been a bit light so far but there's method to my madness lol.

@@phillenan2494 What the fuck no absolutely not.... That's a fantastic way to kill a server and honestly a huge red flag for me at least of a really shitty admin... imo go with one of the long standing rust communities / servers. A couple of decent ones I know of - Rustralasia, Rustafied and Rusty Moose. I'd probably recommend rustafied over the others because they've got a few servers around the world so they should have you covered regardless of where you live. Again, just to be clear, admin abuse is definitely not the norm for good rust servers lol.

No worries whatsoever! The best time is when they're ripe or very late into the fruiting stage as that's the stage where they actually start building the yield on the plant. :)

Yes we have seen bad genes go good. Still trying to understand what dictates it though. Also sometimes you get flawless seeds which is an insane starting point if you grow it in good conditions.

Can somone explain me, what is the profit of farming? It is very time consuming, besides that, i need recourses to craft planters, sprinklers, lights, batteries, slar pannels or wind turbines, water catchers, water purifiers, barrels... That's not all, i also need to build, upkeep and protect another building only for farm. What will I get for such hard work? I can hunt some bears, gather some corns and pumpkins near rivers and that will be enough for me or my group. In addition, i will get food from raids. I can buy scrap for food? Yes, but i will get scrap from looting and recycling stuff and from raids. What can i do with tons of scrap? I don't need that much...
@Malonik
@Malonik 4 жыл бұрын
As it currently stands it isn't at its full potential. This is only step 1 of the farming upgrade. They are working on tier 2 recipes which will have added bonuses which will benefit you for your roaming and PvP. Also while you can farm heaps of scrap without it, having it means you get an easy 1k scrap an hour once it's setup which isn't bad. Ultimately rust has an absolute ton of things to do and different ways to achieve the various goals. Farming just might not be your thing. I enjoy it but I'm a base bitch for the most part lol. :)

@Malonik
@Malonik 4 жыл бұрын
Well for starters you know how it works so that when they drop the tier 2 recipes that have added perks you're already sorted with farming. Plus if you get creative with your bandit camp and outpost trading you can make a lot of scrap. Our local discord mad scientist wavey has a farm setup on vanilla that's producing about 5k scrap an hour from trading cloth to the bandit camp. :)

@Malonik
@Malonik 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. Turns out you can make about 1k scrap per hour with corn fairly easily. I might see how far that can be pushed while still being realistic. Like if it worth focusing on a massive farm on a BP wipe to bang out all the BP's super fast.

Suspect and Blaze built a massive hemp base on Twitch a few days ago, or I suppose at the beginning of the wipe, on a vanilla server. They were generating 9k cloth every 1.5 hours which was giving them 1,800 scrap per run. Not sure how that all works, but that's what they said. They used the gene GGGGYY for their hemp plants, and sold the cloth at Bandit Camp.

Just get like 6 to 12 water jugs. Fill them with 4000mls and depo the water when required. It's the quickest way to get water imo. But have some catchers is good as well so you don't need to travel to the river or another fresh water source.
