Hey Jonathan great video I agree vinegar and water works. I've also used that restoring vintage tools such as hand planes. One thing you want to also make sure you do is after it's done make sure you neutralize the metal because if not the vinegar will continue to eat it don't know if you've ever had that problem. What I like to use in cases like that is evapo rust gel great product leave it on for just a little bit and wipe it off then saying it like you did and you don't have to worry about it continuing to eat away at the metal like vinegar can sometimes do again great video keep them coming buddy I'm loving my dovetail jig by the way

thank you Katz . i had to laugh at myself due to rust . here is why . in the70s-80s i was a machinist at the end of everyday i would stop and clean and oil all the bare metal on what ever i used that day . now i got some wood working stuff as i had to retire due to health ( back lost it ) at 59 or 2012 . i found i could not sit still so wood working is next lol . i got rust on my stuff . you know we forget stuff as we age lol . then i remembered oh yes oil down the shinny metal . wipe it off when you need the machine . you are right 220 should not impact the flatness of what you are doing on light surface rust , even deep pitted rust and it can get deep . skip what you have too. on it .

Add 1 tbs. of dish soap per cup of vinegar/water. On vertical surfaces the sticky soap helps the vinegar adhere to the surface; reducing the amount of vinegar mix used/needed because it will not simply run right off. Shake the spray bottle well before use.

Aloha Katz, instead of using paste wax consider using a water based poly such as minwax. Clean areas very well and try denatured alcohol first after your vinegar cleaning. Then apply a couple coats of the water based poly. You can even use a blue shop cloth and sand with 600 grit sand in-between coats. On Oahu we have lots of moisture so this tip has never failed me as I don't have to keep applying wax.

Hello young man. About vinegar. Here in Scotland we use vinegar and salt to flavour our Fish Supper from the local Fish and Chip Shop (a favourite un the UK after a good night out on the Pi*s (look it up). If that is what it is doing to a drill press, it just show's how hardy wee Scot's people are. As for Jacob S hating you I don't know why. You look like the biggest soft hearted and sensitive human being I have the pleasure to respect in quite a wee while now. Take care BIG MAN.

A battery charger, a bucket, some WASHing soda, and some wire. You can throw a bunch of parts, tools, etc in it and they'll be rust free the next day. Probably less that $0.05 worth of electricity used. Ain't exactly rocket science.

That rocks. Seems very similar to my method, except I use a different chemical, and tend to chuck up a wire brush in the hand drill instead of using a hand-brush. On the other hand, I tend to hand sand with a sanding block instead of power sanding, so I guess it evens out time wise.

Another option for those worried about sandpaper are the Scotch-Brite scrub pads. They stick well enough to your orbital sander. Another product I use instead of vinegar is WD-40. - Chris

Thanks Jonathan. Two questions of I may ask... 1) I bought a jointer the other day with a bit of rust, the person advised using WD-40 for rust removal. Any disadvantages with WD-40 over Vinegar? 2) I got an older Craftsmans bandsaw and the table is aluminum, what is the best way to clean that? Thanks, love your videos.

Hey Jonathan, quick question for you: I just bought a used delta unisaw off a guy in town. I’m convinced it was never used (stellar condition), but the table top is rusted over cause we live in humid houston. My only concern with this technique is that it’s going to drip down into cabinet and get onto the arbor and stuff inside. Is that something to be concerned about or do you think it’s okay?
@katzmosestools

Great video! This method has been really effective for me as well, though I sometimes use a scotch-brite pad on my sander. I've also had good luck lately using Evapo-Rust. It's easier to use on small parts and seems to be a bit less aggressive than vinegar. You can use it for table tops as well, but have to soak paper towels with it and leave them on for at least an hour.
@AndTheCorrectAnswerIs
@AndTheCorrectAnswerIs 5 жыл бұрын
Evapo-Rust IS less harsh because it is not an acid like vinegar. Vinegar dissolves not only the rust, but also eats into the base metal. Evapo-Rust only creates a chemical reaction with iron oxide FEO2 (rust). It does not react with the base metal. There may still be pitting from the rust if it was deep.
