Oh wow, I just found your channel and this has got me doing all sorts of thinking and wondering. I guess I need to watch more of your stuff. That is the smoothest I've ever seen a Rustoleum job layout. What's the secret there? That astro gun doesn't seem to be that expensive, they look to be an $80-90 gun on amazon, the blue ones appear to be high transfer efficiency guns rather then HVLP and most of them have larger tips (1.5, 1.7...). I've tried a few cheaper guns like the typical HF purple gun, the TPC global guns you can get on Amazon to a few in the Astro price range, nothing has laid Rustoleum down without some significant orange peel. I haven't quite figured out if it's the gun, the mix ratios (I've tried from very thin like a little bit more thinner than paint, maybe 1:1.5, to 4:1 paint: thinner), I've tried messing with gun pressures some but have mostly stuck to higher pressures, and I've never tried Japan Drier. While I'm asking things, is that blue DA the HF one? I've been looking for a decent palm DA.

The Astro Euro HE 1.9 is a beast of a primer gun I'm thinking of getting a 1.3 or 1.4 see if it would be a good beginner base/clear gun...I sprayed the helmet with a Sharpe Finex 3000 which is the best budget gun I've found...I mixed it 50/50 with mineral spirite's and 1 tsp Japan dryer per pint...I'm thinking of changing that 50/50 is really thin and most would have trouble over doing it and getting runs...I run my gun pressure at 20-25 psi with this mix...I'm going to do a update video soon I'll try and address some of your questions...Thanks brother
@mpikas5 жыл бұрын
@@gorrillacgorilla405 This raises a question, Is the reason I can't get orange peel down to an acceptable level a cheap gun, paint mixture or technique (this may be a good video idea for you too, if this happens adjust this...) I'm not a complete virgin to spraying paint (my first time was when I was 12 with an old suction feed gun that I found and rebuilt that my dad and godfather must have done 10-20 lacquer paint jobs with back in the '70s), and I can lay down wet and dry coats, control runs for the most part even on a pretty wet coat... but I've never spent any time around anyone that _really_ knew what they were doing and don't own a gun more expensive than the $75 gun that HF sells or a slightly more expensive gun from Grizzly- should I be able to layout a mostly smooth coat of paint with one of these guns or even a cheap gun like the HF purple gun, or do you really need to get into something like the >$100 guns at a minimum for that kind of result? What has further confused me is that I also have 2, 1.0 tip "jamb" guns (one of the original HF purple guns that only has a single-stage trigger and a TPC global one) that I've used to lay down glass-smooth oil and water-based polyurethane finishes on furniture, not even fussing too much with how I thinned them, but I've never succeeded in the same with Rustoleum or Ace hardware oil-based paint. I've gotten the closest by thinning it a lot, over 1:1, and running pressures slightly over what the gun is rated at. You've taken one variable out for me (you got a sooth finish without color sanding so it's possible with Rustoleum). Basically do you think I have a problem with my mixture or technique, or do I just need to get off my wallet and spend some money on a better gun? If it's the Sharpe Finex 3000, do you mean the FX3000? Maybe one of the Astro guns?
@gorrillacgorilla4055 жыл бұрын
@@mpikas A good gun will take a lot of guess work out of it that doesn't mean expensive the Graco-Sharpe FX3000 with 1.3mm is what I use...$97 on amazon right now...I'm going to do a video about this in detail

Great tips! I am refinishing a fiberglass canoe soon....Can you mix say the powder directly into the Rust-Oleum paint without using a tint base or reducer? I do plan to be rolling the paint on. Or is it better to do it into the clear coat? I'm just trying to keep my costs low.

Do you ever use a small amount of enamel hardener (like, say, #4625 Valspar, or an equivalent) with the Rustoleum base coat? If so, does it actually help the enamel to dry a bit quicker, glossier, and harder, as they claim?

@thisoldhooptie3 жыл бұрын
You can buy any clear base and mix in your mica powder then shoot plain clear over that. The clear no pigment base is thicker and easier to shoot then clear I would guess which is why it's recommended for beginners.

@gorrillacgorilla4054 жыл бұрын
The mixing base is the same price as the paint and the primary carrier they use for pigment...you could put almost any pigment on flake in it as long as it doesn't over come the elasticity of the bonding resin. And yes it's a stacked job over a colored base simple.

Your results turned out great. I'm preparing to do my truck, but you didn't give any detail to what you mixed or the ratios for the rustoleum. I would love to mimc what you did, but I couldn't even see the labels of what you mixed, let alone how much. Primer- mystery, reducer / thinner for rustoleum- mystery, the brown stuff that you added last- mystery, mix ratio- mystery. I just about got whiplash trying to keep up with that section of video. Awesome job, awesome end result, but no way for me to get the same results.
