One thing I've found that eliminates the fish eye is removing all the moisture going thru your gun. I have an old vid on my channel of a pipe that can be made for cheap w/ air chuck fitting on each end. Stuff a tee shirt in there. Removes all the moisture, never had a prob w/ fish eye ever since. Much cheaper than buying a desiccant filter. Great job man, great video! Keep it up

I know its been a while but those "pimple/grains" is called solvent trap its caused by one layer drying faster than the other best thing i think the clear could've been shot almost right away

Yea I figured it be that... I actually tested spraying it right after and it wrinkled really bad... tested 15, 30, and 120 min. All got recations with different times but all were reactions within diff coats.. so 1 reacted on the first coat. Another reacted 2nd the other 3rd.. the Temps were low. I'm sure that contributed to it.. I think safest way is let it cure a week. before clearing. Just like the instructions say. Or clear on warm Temps, enough that it's cures a bit to add the clear.. there's alot of factors that can play into it.. I'm going to red paint it again. Not rustoleum this time tho. Just black base coat and clear coat. My dad got hit recently when driving and I had to fix the damage. I had some inconsistencies with the pearls so just gonna repaint it black.

I think the color is great but yes you should have wet sanded before you shot clear. Always wet sand your base I don't care how good it looks. I think you could save by wet sanding go 4-6-12. Then cut and buff and polish well!

Well that was the point of the video. Documenting trial and error over spraying urtahane clear over oil based enamel within an X amount of window.. sanding gives you a securtiy that it will bond to the surface . But in some cases, the surface is still curing so when spraying over it sort of softens the base again letting the 2 paints bond.. in other cases their will be a reaction because the paint is still curing. Won't know untill you try it.. as I called in the beginning, purely and experiment. Which btw it's held up great since! 👍. Next time I might wait wait the 5-7 days. Majic calls to wait 7 days before topcoating..

Lessons learned… prep prep prep
@raymondcascella4920
@raymondcascella4920 8 ай бұрын
After the first coat you never use prepsol. You could have wiped it down with a micro fiber cloth to take dust off then second coat it. I would suggest you watch a few vidios of professionals. Clear coating with metal flakes is something you do after your first dozen or so cars. Good luck.

I appreciate the advise bud. But there's a lot that wasn't shown on the video. I have been painting for a while. I always use wax and grease remover when needed. The problem here was I used prepal AFTER I re sanded the car, To re spray the following coats. But I was in such a hurry that I did not wipe off the prepall right. And I sprayed right over the prepall. Which caused It to fish eye. The experitment side of this job was using cosmetic mica powder as pearls to see if it works the same as automotive pearl's....but thanks for watching!!

Nice👌 I'm thinking about trying to use rustoleum as a cheap base coat. I think I'll let it flash off for several days before I clear tho. I heard the oil based enamels take a long time to cure. Cheers
@vanni_doestv4516
@vanni_doestv4516 Жыл бұрын
Upload a video if u do bud!!.. and yea oil based without catalyst takes a long time to cure. If u do multiple coats without the catalyst. Make sure to do light coats and build it up. If u shoot it wet. It may not cure.. this happens often to users who are new to it. But if you go with the catalyst, you should be good with 15 min flash

Why in the World would you ever use prep all in-between coats??? Ive been painting since 1987 and have never heard or doing that!! I could see if after the first coat turned out like trash,but you would wait a few days and sand it down and then wipe off. Am I misunderstanding what you did?? I take it after the first coat flashed you wiped it down??😮
@vanni_doestv4516

The paint had cured for a few days. Paint was dry not tacky. I used prepall to wipe down before spraying since it had sat outside and got dusty.. the problem was I didn't wipe the prepall off entirely. So the oils stayed on the car and created the fish eye..

My G, what did you use as reducer?
@vanni_doestv4516
@vanni_doestv4516 7 ай бұрын
The majic reducer. Can find it right next to the gallons of paint at tractor supply co. Along with the catalyst that gives it the true gloss. It's like the "clear coat" for the paint. Dries alot faster with it too. So you need thinner and catalyst. Don't skip on any of those.

When you added black base to tint your clear, was it acrylic base coat, or did you use the tractor paint to tint it?
@vanni_doestv4516
@vanni_doestv4516 Жыл бұрын
Urathane base coat. You cannot add to much as the basecoat starts to harden in the clear quickly. Thus making it easy to clogg up the gun... it's much more optimal to add black candy to get a deeper effect If that's what you're after.... I didn't have candybat the moment so I did it just with basecoat. It only gives it a slight shade. Not a huge difference in darkness.. I will be doing another black rustoleum job with black candy over it pretty soon..
@vanni_doestv4516
@vanni_doestv4516 Жыл бұрын
If you go with tractor clear, u can tint the tractor clear with the black tractor paint. But I wouldn't try tractor paint with urathane clear in the same pot. Not unless u wanna experiment and do a video about it! Only one way to find out!! Lol.

@@vanni_doestv4516 what ratio of flake do you think I can add to the clear and spray with a HF Spectrum 1.3 tip gun?
@vanni_doestv4516
@vanni_doestv4516 Жыл бұрын
@bretthays2674 i would definitely go with a .004 flake size for a 1.3 tip. You can use a .008 but your gun might cough depending how much u add. If you invest in an aeropro 500 lvlp gun. You can get the kit with 1.3, 1.5, 1.7, 2.0 nozzles and spray bigger flake with it. That gun also lays clear, base and sealer quite nicely at very low prize.
