Rusty Coffee Grinder - Restoration

In today's episode we will show the renovation of a small metal mill of the Italian company Tre Spade whose base has a ground plan
3.39 x 3.39 inches.
Something about the history of coffee grinding
Initially, the coffee beans were crushed in mortars, or milled in stone grinders to fine powder. Only later, various small and large metal stone grinders were produced. During the First World War, soldiers bought only internal movements for price reasons and then made their own packaging from used ammunition. These models can still be found in collectors' collections.
In the past, practical tools for day-to-day use are more like decoration.

01:03 I started by removing the door handle so that the wooden hand did not break in the caustic bath.
01:28 Prepare a container into which we put the whole grinder. Pour in sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) (used in households to wash basin traps) and pour in hot water. I just want to draw your attention! Protective equipment must be used as caustic is caustic!
02:05 While we grind the grinder we grind the wooden knob of the grinder handle. I used sandpaper on grave P180.
02:22 After 24 hours of brewing, pour the used liquor off.
02:45 Pour clean water into the prepared container to clean the paint disturbed by lye.
03:20 Barba with a brush goes down beautifully :)
03:35 After the grinder has dried, grind off the rivets connecting the bottom container with the grinder body. And then we dismantle the other parts.
05:28 I cleaned the individual parts with a steel brush and to clean up inaccessible places with a metal wool.
07:35 We insure everything by applying a rust remover with tannin, which will make us a metal patina.
08:39 Clean the remainder of the dried rust remover with a light metal wool and apply graphite to moderate the color.
10:44 After re-riveting we assemble a grinder.
13:43 To emphasize the shape of the grinder I used silicone - acrylic silver color and lightly soiled with a dry brush.

Hello. As usual you have succeeded in reviving an old coffee grinder. It intrigued me because I have never seen a drawer to collect ground coffee like this. It's amazing a little thing like that can still be working after all the years. Some good work cleaning and removing the dirt and rust of ages, a little more effort to protect it longer term and presto a still working old grinder. Look how well it still ground the beans.

Good looking restoration and can't get much more basic ofa coffee grinder. Like that you use the silver to break up all that black! Most time I like seeing everything back to how they were made but that looked great on it. Nice job. The paint job was a true justice. The antuque look was kept. I was praying, u dont put a coat of paint on it. Btw, dat graphite mixed in water,, can u pls elaborate it to me. I mean whats it for?

The end result looks great. I particularly like the silver highlights. One bit I don't understand, is the application of graphite and water. I assume the two are mixed to aid even application, and that the intention is for either some form of rust protection or to produce an aged patina?. In either case, wouldn't the graphite prevent the laquer from adhering? Love your work - (Con-Air) ;)

I love your work. The only things I would have done differently is I would have applied a cleaning vinegar or citric acid solution to neutralize the sodium hydroxide before rinsing and I would have used a heat gun to bake on the graphite. Another way to remove rust is to mix the strongest vinegar you can get with 30 or 40% strength hydrogen peroxide just be vigilant because you should see results in 30 to 60 minutes.

I really expected you to take it further and make it much fancier. seems to work well though. If you really like good coffee, one of these days treat yourself to some real Hawaiian Kona. It's quite expensive I know. I got a 1 pound package of beans for Christmas. I have never tasted better coffee, and I've tried a lot of various coffees. I understand that in some places the Nescafe instant is the thing, but that stuff sucks, it's not even as good as cheap coffee made fresh. Some Italian roasts are good, but where the coffee is grown has as much or more to do with it than how it's roasted. I probably won't see Kona again until someone gifts it to me again, if they ever do, it's that expensive, but frankly, if I was a rich man I would drink no other kind. It's that good. So smooth, no bitterness at all.
