Sound whacky but try Paraffin out for cleaning the chain when it is really mucky. £4 from B&Q for a few litres of it, put it in a 50p B&Q spray bottle and you can really soak the chain, sprockets, etc down with it. It removes all the grease and gunk so quickly. The yanks call it Kerosene and it is quite popular there. It is also great for removing tar spots on the bike, exhaust etc,, and also in moderation on car wheels and paintwork if you are gentle and wash it off quickly :)

Thanks very thorough ! I found that when using normal off-the-shelf oil based chain lube they act like a muck magnet getting real gloopy quicky. For my sports bike I have a simple method that works great, up on the paddock stand, use Castrol chain cleaner which shifts grease and evaporates fast, just use an old towel (best) or brush when spinning the rear wheel. Once clean, use a light spray of GT85, which you can then periodically use as cleaner+lubricant. Results are great, doesn't attract any muck, chain stays clean and responsive, clean and lube in 5 minutes.

Sounds good to me - and that's why I use the dry chain lube, tends not to attract the muck....thanks for watching and for stopping by - all the best - TMF

I never cleaned chain on a motorcycle, but I did it on bicycle I get the wire brush to clean the rust, but the spray method is so messy. You wasted a lot of lubricant I used to use toothbrush and chain oil , just dip the toothbrush to the oil, stick it to the chain and spin the wheel. Continue dipping the toothbrush when it gets dry , do it underneath and above the chain , job done, nearly no splashes or wasted oil :)

Other than cosmetics, what issue is there with rust on the outside of the links? It's not like you'll remotely ever have enough rust to compromise any of the links structurally, the chain will wear out from regular mechanical friction (due to use) way before that, no? Also, it's an o-ring chain, so the grease is INSIDE the o-rings. Going to town with a wire brush is a sure way to shred the o-ring rubber...

Some good cleaning advice there mate. I have used the Worth products and I've used one other I can't remember the name of but I'm now using WD40's range of cleaner and lub and in my opinion it beats the rest hands down. The cleaner is first class. I've got pics of it working before and after and its like the ugly duckling forming into a beautiful swan with very little effort needed to clean it. The cleaner does the job for you. Like you, I use the dry lub. My bike came with a Scot oiler but I never use it, as I prefer to use the wax based stuff. I love channel like this that share great bits of knowledge and experience. Cheers Stu

Hello MissendenFlyer, Your still talk a bit funny, but your video is very well done and much appreciated. As a southern US owner, I am constantly addressing a bit of splash rust (1/10 of the chain's length) on my bike from rain getting underneath the cover. It's a '92 Honda 750 Nighthawk with a new chain having no more than 2,000 miles.....What's your recommended rule of thumb regarding how often to deep-clean the chain as you did on this video ? Regards and safe days..... Dr. Chip -- Atlanta, GA
@TheMissendenFlyer8 жыл бұрын
+Chip Robison Hi Chip - I don't have an accent by the way, this is how English sounds ;0) I tend to give my chain a deep clean either when it is obviously crying out for one (like rust showing up as in this case) or failing that probably about every 5th wash... I love Georgia by the way, I have great memories of a holiday with friends of ours in Kennesaw, we rented an aeroplane out of Cobb Co McCullom airfield and explored the area by air - wonderful part of the world.....all the best - TMF.

Crikey! I was surprised to see how small the rear sprocket is on that CRF. To reduce cost, you can use Kero to clean the chain. Just needs a cloth wipe to get rid of the residue before lubing her up again. Never has it affected the chains O-rings for me. If I get surface rust, I prefer to use steel wool wrapped in my hand as I roll the chain through it as it's less harsh than a wire brush, but obviously that method requires a damn thorough rinse afterwards. After cleaning all the old shit off your chain, if you don't have a blower and want to warm the chain without taking her out and getting it dirty, chuck a paddock stand on your rear bobbins, put her in gear and get the chain running for a few minutes to build some heat into it that way. Just one thing TMF..... make sure you lube your chain from the right hand side of the links too! ;o) Cleaned all three bloody bikes and chains today! Pain in the ass but well worth the aggro.

I would never recommend lubing a chain without rinsing off with water after cleaning it, you wouldnt believe the dirt that comes off during the rinse. Also in the final shot i clearly see that your chain links are not nicely in line, indicating that there is lots of friction between the links.
@TheMissendenFlyer8 жыл бұрын
+David Fontijn The whole point of chain cleaner (like the Wurth product I use) is that it washes away the muck and dirt and then evaporates away leaving a clean and dry chain - if I were to rinse with water I would be introducing moisture to an unprotected chain....so I'm afraid I disagree with you on this one David. Everyone to his own though eh? Thanks for watching and stopping by, all the best - TMF

I think he means can you use the brush to clean the roller face of the chain, where it contacts the sprockets. I think you damaged your rings inside your chain using that metal brush.
@TheMissendenFlyer6 жыл бұрын
No - it was a soft copper bristle brush for that very reason....

So many lube jokes........😆 and where on earth did you get a bike drier? Never even heard of one!
@TheMissendenFlyer8 жыл бұрын
+Lee McDonald Bike dryers are widely available, I got mine from Amazon, who coincidentally also sell lube (all types)....

Can I use wd40...?
@TheMissendenFlyer8 жыл бұрын
+David Ceniceros No, WD40 is not intended as a lubricant and its thin viscosity will tend to make it fling from the chain - best to use a specifically designed chain cleaner (the Wurth stuff I use is brilliant). Cheers - TMF
@TheMissendenFlyer8 жыл бұрын
Well it seems we have conflicting advice - WD40 do make a range of bike products including a chain lube, but I don't believe"classic" WD40 is intended as such - it's your choice of course, as long as you're happy with your system and I'm happy with mine! BTW it was a very soft wire brush BTW and was only lightly used to remove the rust on the outer plates of this particular chain as it had been in some salt water...normally I wouldn't let a chain go that far and have only used the brush on that one occasion on that one bike....

+themissidenflyer thanks love the video! Very factual and helped me a lot with cleaning my chain. I'm 17 and I've just got into motorcycling with my 125cc! Small but nether the less fun and gets me to where I need to be! Subscribed! Must say love how clean the bikes are but with my OCD and my bike being white, I'm sure mine will be just as clean! Thanks :)

Nothing wrong with a bit of OCD - glad the video was of use - ride safe....TMF

Could I just use automobile grease to lube it? Its cheaper that way.

This is why I will never buy a chain drive bike again.
