Good to see one of these old military tool chests being restored. I used to have several when I was with MOD. The original surface would have been a very heavy waterproof varnish or a mid poo brown paint on the outside. A few were RAF blue. They would often have unit or individual names stencilled on them. The feet should be around 1" deep and about 1-1/4" wide originally. Lucky to find one with a tray in it. These could be loaded up with tools to the point where they could not be lifted. I used to move some of mine around with a pallet truck because I couldn't lift them. Sadly I never "acquired" one.

Wow, thanks for sharing this information. It explains a lot. Definitely why there was blue there. I did consider colour matching the blue and going with that but preferred the rosewood colour. I looked up the word DIABLO. It means the devil in Spanish 🙈 Probably just someone’s surname though. Thanks for watching 😊

One tip. When adding oil to get through rust and when removing screws, try to do it with the working surface facing up. With a box like that it might have mad pushing down on the screws much more effective. It seemed at first you were really having a tough time till you were able to set it on its side. Wonderful job and awesome to see something restored that is so useful!

Nice job on this, tips for next time you get stiff screws, ue a slodering iron to heat the screws, takes a few minutes to warm up the iron and the wood but helps. Also as you're on the smaller side use gravity to help by putting the greatest pressure on the screw vertically.

Fantastic Job, I've just bought and old smaller trunk thought it would be bigger but only paid £10 for it and £10 delivery I really dont like to take them apart i've lightly refinished a royal corps fixed metre box used rust remover, conical sander and it was coated in rat wee n poo in my outbuilding since the 60s i'm guessing. I am still learning to restore properly it is a lot of work for a hobby. I have loads of vintage furniture in my outbuilding and like to repurpose old storage is my fav for shoes, blankets,plants,bedding etc.

Hi there, thank you so much. That sounds so interesting. Restoring things can be so un-glamorous 😂 Most of my projects are pretty disgusting at first. It's a lot of hard work and very time consuming... but so therapeutic and rewarding. Good luck with the trunk, you'll do amazing I'm sure. 🙌

Wow, Leanne!! This piece turned out SO nicely!! Well done!! I absolutely would have left the stain on the top. It adds character and charm. I also would have left all of the dings in the hardware. I knew you'd win the Battle of the Screws, but I'm so sorry that it took so long. You have the patience of a saint. I've seen the woo charring thing several times, and I am glad that you toned it down a bit by sanding. The color of the wood is so beautiful that I wouldn't want to take away any attention from it. I always love the bits of humor you throw in. I love to laugh!! The boys always make me laugh too. I so enjoy your "beach breaks". I hope the water wasn't too cold. I live about 10 miles from Lake Michigan, but I haven't been near it in years. The water is always frigid. I like my toes warm, and not numb. I am willing to bet large amounts of money that the former owner of this tool box would be so thrilled to see it now. If he has passed, I'm sure he's smiling from above. Take care my lovely friend. Keep smiling, and give the boys a hug and a treat, and say it's from ME. I so wish I could meet them in person. Hugs!!!!
@McCluskeyRestorations3 ай бұрын
Thanks Karen. It's so weird that I ended up loving that stain on the top after being so miffed that it wouldn't go away. Ha ha! The screws won a few battles but I won the war (only just). It never matters to me how long things take, I work full time for the NHS so sometimes it takes me a good two or three weeks to complete a project but that's OK by me. It's my hobby and my therapy. I only started the KZbin channel so I could share my passion and hopefully watch the channel grow. I've learned so much also about filming and editing and putting together content that people can enjoy and find relaxing. I hope I can continue to do it for a while yet. I love to laugh as well and it's always about the most silliest childish things. Sully makes me laugh soooo much, he is the funniest, most naughty and mischievous dog I've ever owned. He's very intelligent but if he doesn't want to do something then he just won't. Unlike Charlie who is the most sweetest and obedient boy. Chalk and cheese, they are! The water was amazing that day. We've had some lovely sunshine here recently. Got to make the most of it because it doesn't last long unfortunately. Lake Michigan looks beautiful. You should definitely go back. You could pop on a pair of crocs or some surfer socks to take the chill off. It's usually nice when you get used to it. Yeah the original owner had passed. I really hope he could see his box and I wish I could ask him how he made that pesky stain. Ha ha. Take care and speak again soon. I'm picking up a new project tomorrow. Hugs!! xx

Sorry if this has been asked before but what sort of time does it take for these restorations? clearly each Piece will differ but justa ball park......you are very patient!
@McCluskeyRestorationsАй бұрын
I personally get consumed in each project so I don’t care how long it takes me to complete it because I love doing it. I spend all my spare time on my restorations but I also work full time for the NHS. So it’s usually every night and all weekend. I reckon I must spend at least 30 hours on each project. The workbench took a bit longer and the current one I’m working on will probably be about 40-50 hours. It’s a monster! It’s a miracle how I manage to condense them down into a 30 minute video really. Thank goodness for the fast speed function or the viewers would be extremely bored.
