Not too long ago I picked up a Teslong borescope, and much to my surprise I was shocked at the condition of my bores, which I had cleaned pretty well (or so I thought). Quite the eye opener and now the scope is a regular part of my cleaning ritual.

I don’t know if that barrel is screw cut or if a moderator has been used. Here in the UK they are common place. Mods will cause bad rust pitting on a barrel if left on the rifle even for short periods. The ammonia produced in mods is amazing. I now attach and remove mods directly before and after use. Run a bore snake through it and clean it regularly. My RFD demonstrated one shot through a brand new mod. The stench of Ammonia after one shot was unbelievable. The problem doesn’t seem to affect stainless barrels nearly as much however they will still rust.

I live in Louisiana, doesn't matter how long you leave the AC on, without a hardcore dehumidifier going 24/7 (which I don't have) you're gonna get spikes up to 80% humidity inside some days. Aero sent me a barrel one time that they swore was CrMoV but I'm pretty sure was 416R (had the wrong sheen to it and was marked CMV), and it rusted in the box sitting on the shelf in 3 months before I ever built the rifle. They RMA'ed it for me and when I mentioned it didn't actually seem like Chrome Moly to me, the new barrel I got was lighter, a different color, and appropriately stamped CrMoV instead of CMV. But yeah, I too would love to know how that happened. I'm paranoid as all get out about that happening to my barrel, so at first I kept my guns stored soaked in oil, then later on I got a can of RIG grease and started coating all my stuff with it. I even went a step further and started vacuum sealing my guns lol.

I have a 20” Faxon match barrel that I keep very clean. Well I finally picked up a Teslong bore scope. And it has one spot of pitting in it I truly believe it was from the manufacture. I always clean my rifle’s after shooting then. And this particular barrel has NEVER seen rain in my possession. Just light range trips in good weather

Hi, it is quite possible the barrel had some rust in it from the manufacturer. If it is small it probably will have no impact on accuracy. have a look around the pit mark after shooting to see if the area collects extra copper fouling. If there is not much extra fouling it is probably not having any impact on the projectile. The muzzle is the most critical area.

@@ozzistraightshooter9273 You are 100% correct this barrel has produced consistent sub MOA accuracy. It just bothers me that I paid 300 + taxs and shipping. I was expecting a perfect barrel and technically I wouldn’t have known the wiser if I didn’t get a bore scope.

I’ve read that when you clean your rifles you want a few dry patches to completely clear all moisture from the bore. Then run your patch of oil let it soak into the pores for a few minutes then wipe out the oil with a dry patch because if you have any moisture in the bore when you put oil on it it will seal in the moisture if you leave the oil in the bore and they claimed that’s worse than leaving a dry bore. Now before all you people start telling me I have no idea what I’m talking about the Marines make us have a completely dry bore before they accept it in the armory as clean rifle and I do believe they know what the heck they are doing to keep a rifle as rust free as possible!

I recently purchased a Teslong borescope, it was long overdue but they are affordable now. I have learned a lot about rifle bores, why some of my guns got really good accuracy and why some did not. I live in the far north and when you bring a rifle in from the cold it straight away starts to condense moister on the cold steel, its easily wiped off the outside but the inside of the barrel is not so easily cleaned. There are a few corrosive chemicals in burnt gunpowder that when mixed with moisture will easily rust your bore. I don't know what the answer is other then stainless steel.

My German grandfather always told me to clean the rifle immediately after the last shot while the barrel is still warm. Keep at it worh copper solvent, regular solvent, and until the patches come out clean! Hehe...not trolling here but my 1914 mauser sporting rifle made in oberndorf has a nicer barrel then this poor rifle featured here and my rifle had corrosive ammo shot through it for 100+ years!

Not properly lubing the inside of the barrel or bore this needs to have a thin shiny layer of lubrication applied where metal on metal contact is present I know oil sucks but brass is continuously being pushed down a metal barrel the brass is metal like this would of change the outlook on that barrel drastically but it also looks like someone shot the wrong round it was successful but it caused pitting in the inside of the bore then stored & not lubed properly caused the unfinished spots in the bore to start rusting
@RetrieverTrainingAlone
@RetrieverTrainingAlone 3 жыл бұрын
Do you mean copper? The brass from the case shoulder/neck seals the chamber at ignition. Copper from bullet jacket will coat the rifling/lands down the barrel.
@rudeboi9625
@rudeboi9625 3 жыл бұрын
Missy Skeeter I’m not taking any chances could be copper deposits a very good chance but it could also be rust deposits where the bullets stratches the finish of the inside of the bore enabling rust because the finish is gone idk I’m just gonna attempt to clean and if there are copper deposits that should be cleaned out also because that’s gonna cause unwanted grit & friction in that barrel when u decide to shoot it again potentially causing the bores finish to start pitting

I am guessing it was a button rifled barrel. If there are metal artifacts in the barrel when they pull the button through it gets ironed into the barrel and later starts coming off leaving these kinds of patterns. The manufacturers know about it and let it go because the justify it by saying it is a hunting rifle. Chances are it will be a good shooter but will need frequent cleanings to keep it at its best. For hunting you will never notice the difference. Take a borescope to a sporting goods store and see how disgusting the quality is. I will be glad when most people own borescopes as it will force higher quality from the manufacturers.

@@ozzistraightshooter9273 Hammer forging can also produce these blemishes as well. Don't be discouraged with the rifle as it might be pretty darned accurate as it is. The borescopes magnify these defects. Totally clean all the copper from the bore. Then shoot 2 or 3 shots. Run a slightly oiled patch down bore to get the loose crud out. Then see if these spots are picking up copper. Some do and some don't.

Yes Sir completely agree I have a Faxon 20” match barrel that I keep very clean. It has 1 small spot that looks like a worm ate the metal away. It looks exactly like what a old log looks under the bark that a termite got to. I don’t think it’s rust now that you mentioned it that’s exactly what happened. It’s messed up though because this 20” barrel was 350 dollars from Brownell’s. But when I looked down my Krieger M110 profile barrel that’s cut rifled looks like a million dollars perfect. And you can tell it’s prefect when you run a tight fitting patch through it. It just glides right through it very easily no resistance at all. But yes the more people who get bore scopes the less these companies will get away with selling junk. 350 dollars for a 20” barrel isn’t cheap.

I'm no expert, looks don't mean much when using a endoscope, it could be much worst and still produce sub moa. Endoscopes are great for viewing copper & carbon build-up..etc. My new Tikka T3X Tac A1 barrel looks like spider webs inside, but shots .5 moa all day. Same with my Savage(s), pits and tool marks, but sub moa rifles. "Never judge a book by its cover".

Hi, The owner of this rifle took this one back and had it replaced with another one that was identical except the barrel is much smoother internally. The new rifle shoots much tighter groups, so I believe the barrel internal surface condition is an important factor in accuracy. However you are correct this is only one factor and there are many factors that influence accuracy. I have another special camera that shows changes in barrel diameter and if a barrel remains tight on the projectile near the muzzle it also help accuracy considerably..

I purchased a Howa 1500 barreled action, shot 10 rounds through it, ran patches, and stored it in a conditioned space. Took it out to start reloading and wanted to look at the barrel with a scope, I found the corrosion, and it took 3 weeks to clean(patches, brushes and jb). Is there something up with these barrels that causes this ?

Smith & Wesson had issues with Rust of some of their M&P pistols stainless steel slides, eventually was a metallurgy problem with the supplier who I believed lost the contract, was this caused by being stored in a gun case? When I store my firearms and don't intend to shoot them for a while I used either Corrosion X or Strike Hold on all the metal parts and haven't had any issues.

@ozzistraightshooter9273
@ozzistraightshooter9273 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jan, Some pitting may not have any adverse effect on the operation or accuracy of your rifle. If you shoot the rifle see if the pitted area starts to collect a lot of copper fouling. Sometimes as the rifle runs in the pitting may smooth out. It is something that you should keep an eye on with your scope to see what happens as you use the rifle more.
@Dan-di9jd

You may not have been the cause of this pitting. I gotten a new barrel early in the pandemic and looking at it through the borescope it had pitting all over sort of like this video. I shot it some and it works wonderfully so I'm not too worried. As ozzi says, check for extreme copper build up but on mine I use wipout bore cleaner so it remain very clean.

@ozzistraightshooter9273
@ozzistraightshooter9273 2 жыл бұрын
Hi John, A barrel may be worn but may still be satisfactory for many applications. For competitive target shooting you want a perfect barrel. For hunting within range limitations it may not be very critical. Make sure your barrel is as clean as possible. Use a bore paste and scrub it. Make sure there is nothing obstructing the barrel. Rust or lead build up should all be removed. If your barrel has no obstructions or build up or rust or lead it should be safe to shoot. If you can shoot it then see how accurate it is. If you have a bore camera look down the barrel after shooting to see if there are sections of the barrel that are collecting fouling. Rust spots will often collect a lot of fouling. Some barrels will clean up very well with some shooting and scrubbing with bore paste. If you are not experienced with looking at barrels please take the rifle to an experienced gunsmith and get their opinion.
