Restoring a vintage rusted carbon steel wok. The people I purchased it from say it was a wedding gift from 1976. But then added that may not hold up in court because of their bad memories. Does anyone recognize this wok? Sharing! :)
Pretty much just used Brillo pads, Bar keepers Friend and lots of elbow grease. And Easy Off Oven Cleaner for the underside. Using the wok on an electric coil stove.
Warmed the wok at 250 F for 15 minutes before oiling (canola) wiping ALL off, then baking at 450 for 50 minutes to an hour 3 times. That's without a wood handle attached.

Nice job. I just refinished an old wok that a friend had neglected for years. I just boiled some cheap white vinegar in it and scrubbed around with some 0000 steel wool and a pair of tongs and the seasoning literally just fell right off in minutes with almost no elbow grease. Give it a try if you haven’t.

My wok is badly rusted all around the edges where it is very sharp. I used another guys method with easy off and letting it sit for 3 hours. Only part still rusted were the handles, one came clean, the other one no matter how hard a scrubbed the rust still on it. The edges are what I'm concerned about because I don't want to risk cutting my hands when I grab it.
@xetaprime
@xetaprime 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you might need to sand the edges. Wet sandpaper will smooth the edge. It will be thin but not sharp. You'll expose the steel (if seasoned) but just keep it oiled. Bar Keepers friend is really good at removing rust, if you haven't already tried it.

How would you get this result if the handles don't come off? Can wood handles go on the oven for seasoning

Yeah, I always wondered why they’d make a nonstick (teflon) wok, when teflon isn’t supposed to be cooked with on high heat??It literally will release TOXIC FUMMES!! A wok is all about high heat cooking…… I get the idea, but if you really want a “non stick” wok that u don’t have to season yourself….. There’s healthier options. Such as an enameled wok. Personally I’d stick with Carbon steel. If you care for it correctly…….It can last FOREVER!! Just like a good cast iron skillet and dutchy. Bought my first set of three at 20 and I’ve bad it for 22 years. They are some of my favorite pans. Fry anything, makes THE BEST cornbread, pineapple upside down cake, braised oxtails, omelets, fried eggs. There really isn’t a substitute for well seasoned cast iron and carbon steel pans. 👍🏼
