What scale sounds better to you? Also at 5:08 I have the right diagram up, but it should say D major pentatonic instead of G major pentatonic. Sorry for that. Have a rockin day everyone✌️

Not certain which one to choose, Rusty. I will try them out and analyse the sound. I have just recently taught my 10 year old great-nephew the main body of the song and I try to use it to teach him a bit of music theory. I find doing so helps him understand how and why songs use certain scales and chords. I did the same thing with Carry On Wayward Son. It has actually made me a better player to teach him because I really have to analyse the songs. Thanks Rusty.

I loved this lesson Rusty, all scales sounds awesome to my ears, 2 majors more happy/country flavour and minor more bluesy/darker/sad colour. It will be good to show details of rythmic parts and riffs. Thanks so much for this lesson! Happy to learn with you ;-)

To me D Minor is the best. I think people "hear" the song in different ways. The original solo always sounded a bit off to me, like the player was in the wrong key. Before KZbin highlighted this mystery, In searching around the fretboard for the best key, D minor pentatonic seemed correct,

Rusty...I recently discovered you and started with your arpeggio patterns and now this. I have been struggling to get beyond playing pentatonic scales and moving into more expressive lead licks. Somehow just these two videos have helped me break into a different space for the first time in a couple of years. My backing track improvisations this morning were different, better, more expressive, more creative. You've managed to find a teaching transitional space that seems uncommon. I look forward to continued learning from you. Thank you!

Eddie was a personal friend of mine. Lived right up the street from me here in Nashville. He interpreted this song 100% in G major. He actually thought it was funny when people would play it in D. Now, Steve Gains interpreted it in D. I asked Ed one time, "As good of a guitar player that Steve was, why did he play SHA in D?" Ed simply said "I have no idea".

@@rustysguitar1 Most people don't know this but Eddie and Al Kooper were very at odds on what key Ed should have played the solo in. I personally played it in D for many years. Just could not make G work for some reason. Then one day it just clicked. This was before I met Ed. Now, D sounds way off and amateur to me.

Another terrific lesson. I mean, who hasn't fantasized about playing that song at one time or another, amirite. But who'da figured it would be so easy! 🤯 I like how you're giving a basic roadmap to what's going on rather than trying to mimic every. single. note. of the original. But I spent longer than I like to admit trying to break down how you did that rhythm part at the beginning.

I break down the intro in this video. 5 classic guitar riffs that will make you a better player! kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJK7lXyMZ7RjbaM. Rusty, my friend I really appreciate that you put the distortion pedal in there too and explain positions on your guitar etc. etc. because you are able to get very distinct sounds . When I played electric rhythm, I was more of a minimalist. I didn’t really use but two things of Wawa pedal on some fuzz. I most played acoustic guitar, amplified more Eagles, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, stuff like that. Now I’m chasing tone sounds or one person said happy hunting for tones . ❤

Good discussion. I think shifting from D major pentatonic over the D & C Chords to G Maj pentatonic over the G chord makes the most satisfying 'solution' to my ears. There's potentially a slight clash with the F# over the I chord sounding a bit 'hokey'. But everything you played was great as good phrasing and chord tone targeting overcomes that potential clash.

Here's a little fun fact (at least for me!): Ed King wrote this song on his 1973 Fender Stratocaster and you can actually own this guitar for nearly half a million dollars via Carter Vintage Guitars. I happen to own this exact same guitar, same year, finish and maybe even off the same run as far as I know. To me it was just a used Fender guitar since Leo sold out his company in 1964 but if I was to sell it......I'd be hoping for around a mere 1% the price tag on Mr. King's Strat........may he of course RIP. Jim C.

Fantastic lesson, thanks Rusty. I’ve been playing the song in a cover band for a while now but I didn’t have a clue how to solo and improvise over the top. You’ve opened up so many possibilities. Thanks again 👌

The song is the key of G Major where the C is IV and D is V chord. Now that the song starts from the V chord, it makes it D Mixolydian.

You are right! Ed King just said that he looked at it as G major. But definitely, D mixolydian is correct! Thanks man.👍

The D major sounds good to me, I really appreciate the slower speed you use to break down the licks, I can get them right then I focus on speeding up. I hope you enjoy doing these half as much as I enjoy learning with your help. Take care 😊

I’m most comfortable in D major pentatonic. Yea, make sure you have all the notes right and then build up some speed. I really had fun making this video lesson! Thanks Mike and enjoy your weekend 👍

After around 5 Miller high life's. I don't think no one around the campfire would know. I didn't realize this is my favorite scale my go to scale with 2 or 3 added notes. Thanks for the insight. I thought ED used the BB box
