This is a strong, good-natured symphony with great thematic material, wonderfully orchestrated, with an originally conceived "scherzo" and affecting "trio" which is quite delightful. I've now heard Gipp's 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Symphonies, all of which show her to be a major composer with a strong individual personality. I believe this 3rd Symphony was dedicated to Sir Arthur Bliss, who admired it greatly.

I've now heard Gipps' 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Symphonies, all of which show her to be a major composer with a distinct musical personality. I'd like to see all of her five symphonies commercially recorded; only the Second has been, to date.

Very attractive music but (for me) not quite as fresh and engaging as her second Symphony, written 20 years earlier. We need modern recordings of these works.

It's hard for such an old recording, by what sounds like a substandard orchestra, to sound fresh and engaging. If only Richard Hickox had lived, he just might have recorded these excellent symphonies.

Ruth Gipps is brilliant. The orchestra is out of tune and does not do this work justice.

I agree that this is Gipps's best Symphony - very evocative. But the recording is dreadful (lots of hiss & out of tune) Surely there is a better edition than this?

For me, I love this recording, a little unclear tune make this work more ancient and unique. That's why I love the premiere recordings than the new ones
