As promised, my Barbie movie review: The toy nerd in me needs a nap. The film fan in me thinks Barbie is gorgeous and deserves an Oscar for set design. As the father of two fierce females, I think this movie is a pink-frosted cupcake filled with cream and a bit of barbed wire. Since 1959, Barbie has inspired little girls by telling them that they can be anyone and do anything. That message has been undermined by a mega-blockbuster movie that tells girls they can be anyone and do anything in Barbieland, but never in the Real World, because… Patriarchy. “We Girls Can Do Anything!” (but not really). So a super-successful female director and a super-successful female producer and star, make a movie about a super-successful female toy company co-founder, who created the biggest selling doll in history, to sell to females, to give to their female children in order to empower them, who will now line up to see that movie, only to learn that, “It is literally impossible to be a woman.” The irony. After 64 years, Barbie went from Victor to Victim in a runtime of 113 minutes. Some people may not think that she deserves better, but kids certainly do.

I think that it's important to acknowledge oppressive forces in order to overcome them. It doesn't do girls any favors to leave them unprepared, but girls can still triumph with a little solidarity. I think that's closer to the message of the film.

Just saw the Barbie movie. Thank you so much for this background information and your usual historical context. We really enjoyed the movie---the humor was unexpected and wonderful as was the cultural commentary and thoughtful and creative portrayal of this toy icon.

Unfortunately #Mattel has continually messed up in the quality of the Barbie & Ken dolls along with their fashion packs for many years now. They moved away from the dolls with beautiful painted faces & rubber bendable legs to generic faces & non bendable arms & legs with thin hollow bodies with terrible screen printed outfits that are way overpriced, but when they do offer beautiful Barbie's they're way too overpriced over priced for the average collector, & this is coming from a average collector too!! 🩷🌹
