Yes, it’s always been a mystery how the French can stay so slim with all those wonderful patisseries! I read somewhere that they keep to small portions for every meal. I absolutely adore the French patisseries, no one else can make cakes like the French chefs. There are poor copies in the UK. When we go to France we always seek out the nearest bakery, the cakes are just out of this world.

@@chema3038 Andalusia was the last part of Moorish Spain (Al-Andalus) to be re-conquered by Isabela and Ferdinand in 1492. Hey Ruth, your excitement is infectious! Do enjoy your time in France.
Lovely to see you having such a great time! Just a note to others, you need a Crit Air certificate for your vehicle, which registers it with the French authorities to show the level of emissions for your car, for authorisation or charges for clean air zones. You can do it from the UK for a few pounds, and registers that vehicle for life. You can also buy a pass for the toll booths, so that you don't have to stop and faff around.

You were very lucky to happen upon an O'Taco. There are very few throughout France, apart from major cities. I live in rural SW France and the idea of junk food would be heaven. We have a pizza takeaway and thats about it. Yes, its great to try and eat healthily. But sometimes you just want a really big kebab (which, in France, will be veal/turkey. Very rarely lamb. Just not the same!) Love your enthusiasm for French cuisine though. But, if truth be told, you'd make a fortune if you opened a chippy here. The French love "les Fish and Chips". And these are mostly frozen, cash and carry offerings, served in bistros. Proper fish and chips would create a riot.

Arras was the first place we stayed on our first trip to France. We found a campsite with fishing lake, a pizza oven and a small bar with a bakery a short walk away. The son had taken it over for his parents and over the years he upgraded it adding a restaurant, shower block, washing machines. We used to head there every year as our first stop off point as it was close to Calais. We gave him a huge Welsh flag and when we went the following year, it was hanging in bar. Good times. I can’t wait for your vlog next week - from the teaser, it will evoke even more memories.

My siblings and I did the same journey, tunnel included, in 2018 for our great uncles’s centenary and stayed in Arras too. One thing we discovered is that the town centre is not quite what it seems. Arras was badly damaged during WW1 and afterwards the damaged buildings around the Grand Place were rebuilt in concrete but to the same design. If you walk around and look carefully you can find the replicas. I’ve seen the videos out of sequence so it’s a bit poignant contrasting your excitement at arriving in France with what happened when things got a bit pear shaped but these things happen and I’m sure next time will go better.

Hi Ruth, I know the feeling of driving on the wrong side of the road, came to France today on a business trip for the week. Took me a bit of time to get use to driving from Charles de Gaulle airport to Normandy especially when I couldn’t get my Google maps working through the hired cars radio, didn’t help the radio settings being in French and not used French since I was at school many years ago but managed to change it to English. before coming I downloaded the offline maps for around Paris to Normandy in case I lost my signal or my data package didn’t activate correctly until I could get it working. Try downloading offline maps on google maps you can do more than one location as it can help if you lose your signal on your phone. I do the same back home in Scotland as well especially if I’m going somewhere where the phone signal is patch like in some areas of the highlands and Shetland.

Most times it has been very good but just in my case I did have that snag in France re data...solved quickly by getting a French data simcard plus my phone is dual sim ...ie can take 2 sim cards giving greater flexibility. Another little point you refer to the limitations imposed post brexit on uk passport holders. Having an Irish passport is very useful as we retain the same eu travel and settlement rights as before. I assume you have no Irish family connections? I know the applications from the UK for Irish passports has increased dramatically with people aserting their Irish ancestry.
