I went to the UK's most remote station. 10 miles from the nearest public road, Corrour railway station in the Scottish Highlands has an unparalleled sense of isolation.
After spending some time in the Loch Rannoch area, I head to Rannoch Station, a remote train station stop on the West Highland Line between Glasgow and Fort William. I catch a train into Scotland’s wilderness to reach Corrour railway station, known as the UK’s most remote train station and the UK’s highest mainline station.
Corrour Station is located in the middle of nowhere and the amazing Corrour Station House restaurant is a great place to stop for a coffee or a meal. The area surrounding Corrour train station is popular for outdoor activities and hillwalking, especially as there are some munros located nearby.
The beautiful Rannoch Moor is one of Scotland’s last wildernesses and the views from the train were spectacular. Corrour in Scotland is such a fantastic place to visit and I recommend it to those seeking solitude and looking to get away from it all.

Corrour Station was such an amazing place to visit! What's the most interesting railway station you've ever visited? Let me know below. 👇

Hi Ruth, Fantastic video, I can see the Highlands and Islands tourist board hiring you to make their video. I love Rannoch and surrounding areas. I don't wish to criticise like airies, you pronounce Pitlochry perfectly just take the loch from the middle of that. I used to pull my caravan up to Rannoch if you were driving next to the loch you had to look out for the deer jumping across the road. You could also get groceries in the bank. The first time my wife and I went there the camp site was closed, when I stopped outside the gate and switched off my headlights it was pitch black. Your enthusiasm makes me want to get down to the station and jump on a train.

Love your videos, I'm a retired signalman, and at one time was offered the position of signalman at Rannoch, the job had a cottage going with it but the elderly couple who had retired were still in the cottage and I didn't want them forced from their home, I would have loved living and working there but ended up as a relief signalman at Dumbarton which was even better.

I’ve probably spoken to you at Craigendoran! Bill Gray moved up to Fort William Jnc when Yoker took over. Poor soul died in the box on the nightshift, I was banavie that night and the bulks driver phoned me when he got held at the inner home, he walked to the box and found Bill. Last time I was in Craigendoran I used it as a bothy when I was pilotman because the bells were down. The box wasn’t looking too great! Then I picked up the sleeper in the loop and headed home, probably 20 years ago now.

@paulmacdonald4530 sorry to hear that about Bill, I covered pilotman between Craigendoran and Garelochhead, first time that I was on it and got off at Garelochhead in the dark, I went to use the public toilet as we had no key at that time to get into the bothy, we'll after I finished I went to wash my hands and thought that someone had left the remains of their fish supper in the sink, I went to lift it out and it was a nappy, fully loaded, my stomach still churns at the thought of it, but travelling up on the bulks at one o'clock in the morning was an experience.

Haha, the cooking and dancing, there was a lot of that. 😂 No, I wasn't on Japanese TV, there were some TV opportunities but they fell through. Maybe the video you watched was about the Nissan commercial? On the Japanese channel we often worked with Nissan Japan and were part of the launch of their new Nissan Caravan van which they wanted to promote for vanlifers. We were in the commercial for the van and attended Nissan events doing talk shows, appearances and meet & greets. It was a really fun experience!

The way the stations at both Corrour and Rannoch have been preserved and made attractive to visitors, with the cafe and restaurant, is an imaginative bit of planning, to be applauded. The history of this line is interesting too. Like Venice, it survives atop a footing of timbers in swampy ground. 5000 men took 10 years to build it. Amazing! Thanks Ruth for showing us this wild place.

The eighteen hundreds was the period from 1800-1809. Just as one refers to the nineteen hundreds. What you were referring to was the nineteenth century. The railway was built in the 1890s. Referring to the whole century as the 1800s is a sloppy habit from America.

Great Video. You seemed surprised about the steam trains. I took the West Highland Line up to Mallaig back in 1989. The segment from Fort William to Mallaig was via steam train. The steam trains have been operating during tourist season since 1984. The company running the service helped in the production of the Harry Potter films with railroad equipment and shooting locations along the West Highland line. You should take the steam train up to Mallaig and go over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which also appears in Harry Potter. I looked it up and it appears I did most of the Northern 500 before it was a thing (?) in the early 1990s. I stayed in Bettyhill. I remember that Durness had a gas station, but the bank visited twice a week as it was in a van. I visited Skye as well as some of the more out of the way places.

In the days leading up to the first Lockdown in 2020, we took a drive on a whim from Pitlochry, where we were having a couple of nights, to Rannoch Station. Not knowing about the tearoom on the platform before we arrived, we decided to stop for a coffee and a cake. We returned to the car park to find numerous deer milling around between the few cars, munching on the grass verges! Whether or not rhis was normal, or a symptom of there being even less human activity than usual I couldn't say - but it was quite a surreal experience!

Worried about pronunciation of ‘Corour’’ but as Scottish surprisingly and consistently fails to correctly pronounce ‘Loch’ and ‘ Rannoch’ - CH!

Not a word about the high production quality, or the research and effort put in, or the positive nature of the video. You chose to take the time to post a negative comment on a small element of pronunciation. Unbalanced.

And you dear person must also know that virtually every rail operator worldwide receives some kind of subsidy in compensation for facilitating commercial development and job opportunities along their rail route? Please do not ignore the big picture which includes the likes of government subsidized roadways you drive in your private vehicle - and the airlines you fly on (fuel tax exemption). Thank you.

Hi Ruth I mentioned on another video we done the north coast 500. There is a place called the apple cross pass. It states only for experienced drivers. I have been driving for over 50 years and we done it in a 6 berth motor home. It was a bit scary and make sure you have enough fuel because you will be paying nearly double when you leave it at tongue. Take care and stay safe. Tom.

I have seen Corrour in the morning mist and evening snow when passing through in both directions on the sleeper train. I have also seen it in the brilliant sunshine when I took fhe grain from Fort William one time and took a walk around the loch behind the station. A beautiful and remote gem still undiscovered. I agree with your comments about the NC 500. My partner and I did parts of it on touring bicycles 20 years ago before the van crowds emerged. Thankfully!

Lough is also used in Irish Gaelic. So, I would say Loch is a Gaelic word rather than a Scottish Gaelic word. I understand the bulk of Gaelic words in Scotland as they are very similar to Irish Gaelic.

Another beautiful journey. I’ve noticed in various travel groups I belong to on FB etc that there seems to be an obsession with Skye right now, especially from my fellow N Americans. We’ll go sometime but it’s well down the list for our Scotland travels . We find most UK stations easy to use but Jasper Train Station in Alberta here in Canada is probably our fav for uniqueness and location.

thurso is the northernmost town and railway station in mainland UK in scotlands highland province on atlantic coast facing orkney island and its capital kirkwall, a few kilometers away accessible by ferry. highway from central scotland also ends here, costco superstore being a prominent landmark of thurso town. the track section is from highland capital inverness. most stations in inverness thurso section are in wilderness and very remote. thurso to penzance, in cornwall, southwest england, is longest railway stretch in uk, about 2200 km. john o groates, another hamlet in northern coast, however, is not connected by scotrail. this is the viking zone of UK carrying history of norwegian invaders and settlements in past. amazing place on earth that is scotland. bagpiper sound never really leaves you even when you have left the land far behind for another country. and sipping glenfiddich in a faraway country, stokes those unforgettable memories.
