I hitchhiked through Scotland in 1977, and got picked up by the owner of the Glenfiddich distillery. He explained all about how Glenfiddich is made, why it is the best bar none, and how to appreciate Scotch in the best way. Back then there were not that many Americans hitchhiking, and he was glad to give us a ride.

I've tried quite a few of the Islay whiskys, and for such a small island they definitely taste a lot different to each other. Each have their own charm and almost always I can find a new nuance to the taste. A few hints for those who want to test peaty Islay whisky: Start at the lower end of peatiness, and move on to the heavier ones as you get used to them. That leaves your taste buds a fair chance to notice smaller differences. If you have a strong (say something like above 55%) and it is non-chill filtered, it might benefit from a few drops of water to open it up and give you even more flavour.

This is hands down one of the best Islay travel Videos out there and i say that as a Whisky nerd.
You were wondering if there are more square lighthouses. Well, on the island of Terschelling here in the Netherlands there is a big squared lighthouse called 'Brandaris' named after Saint Bandarius and dating back to 1594 (though the first issue of the lighthouse dates back as early as 1323 as top of a church). The lighthouse is still in use and manned for sea traffic control. The island features also it's own whisky called 'Saint Brandaris', though it is distilled at Islay. There's also a whisky version called 'The Lost Whisky' named after an incident by which after a storm in 1969 dozens of whisky barrels washed ashore. Now this new whisky, distilled by Ardmore and after aging in bourbon and rum casks, is shipped on board of the Dutch barkentine (tallship) 'Thalassa' to sail around the world before being bottled.

In the San Francisco Bay Area are many lighthouses and not all are round. Lime Point Is at the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge. It is not even a proper tower. It is just the top of a building. East Brother Light Station is on an island and just atop a building. It is a Bed and Breakfast Inn. You can stay there. Quinn's Lighthouse has been moved and is a restaurant along the Alameda Oakland Estuary in Oakland, CA. There might be a lot more.

My father was born and raised on Islay❤, and tomorrow will be the 9th anniversary of his passing. He was born in the house at Ardnave in 1935. His father was the tenant farmer. He emigrated to Canada after completing his national service in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, serving in post-war Germany and during the Suez crisis. He brought our family over to Islay in 1974 for three weeks and I was fortunate to spend my 10th birthday there. I remember going to the round church in Bowmore, going to the sweet shop (of course!), playing football with my cousins, and herding sheep to the dipping pools. My aunt (his sister) and her husband were the tenant farmers at Ardnave at the time, so we got to stay in the house where my dad was born. My brother went over to Islay in the 90’s, and at time the house at Ardnave was no longer used and had fallen into disrepair. He and my sister-in-law went over again a few years ago and I was delighted to learn the house has been restored. My father worked at Bowmore distillery as a young man for a while, and my cousins have been involved in the some of the newer distilleries (maybe Kilchoman?) I’m going to pour a dram of 12 yr Bowmore Darkest Sherry Casked and raise it my dad right now.

Ms Aisling. Today I had a 12 year old Highland Park. I had asked for an accompanying glass of water and the barmaid said "Should I pour that in the whisky"? I don't think I have screamed No with such anguish or emphasis in my life. As a regular in my local I have some incredibly small influence over which whisky they bring in. I suggested Laphroaig. Your vlog has reminded me after too many years of what a damnably civilised thing sipping a single malt can be. Many of the other regulars are necking lagers, some of which I appallingly understand to be Australian. I remain however a Scottish gentleman. With thanks.

Hey Ruth ! A very lovely video. I was aware of Islay, and Lagavulin through the American TV comedy series "Parks and Recreation". In my favorite episode, Ron Swanson,(perhaps America's manliest man) follow a series of clues to Lagavulin where his favorite Scotch is made, and is reduced to tears. Most, if not all, Bourbon barrels come from my home state of Kentucky, White Oak barrels can be used only once to make Bourbon. I hope that when you find yourself near Glasgow you will visit Renfrewshire, origin of my family name.

Hi Ruth, just found your channel after searching for videos about Islay. I first heard of the island after reading a story about a young man called Leonard Dawson who moved to the island age 34, originally from Lincolnshire. The story goes from a little Portnahaven church over 200 mourners followed Leonard along the winding road to the foot of Ben Tart a’Mhill. On the way to the top every man had helped to carry Leonard to the hilltop as his last request was to be buried at the top. Hopefully I’ll visit one day soon. Great video Ruth, lovely introduction to Islay and its whiskys! I've tried Laphroaig, but find it to perfumed for my tastes If you visit Orkney, or are just curious about other whiskys, I can recommend Highland Park whisky - I find it has a very smooth taste (for a single malt whisky), though I've only tried the 10 year old Did any of the distillery tours mention what they are doing to make peat consumption sustainable - I guess they use additional heating so the peat is only used for the flavour its smoke provides ... I doubt the whisky industry is ready for artificial peat smoke, though it is probably technically feasible!

Thanks Tom! I'll hopefully get to Orkney this year so thanks for the recommendation! I only did the tour at Kilchoman and there was nothing mentioned about making peat consumption sustainable.

Fabulous Islay Whisky Tour Video Ruth - Will you more of these Whisky Tours Ruth featuring more Whisky brands? This one is certainly a winner - please keep them coming - Slàinte !!! As a footnote, some years ago, l bought a Bottle of The Bowmore - 1972 - which l have never touched. I was shocked at the on-line Retail price of £1300.00 !!! Needless to say, this will go in my Coffin to accompany me when l finally depart !!!

Enjoying your trips Ruth. One thing I have done on 'singing sands' is walk on the dry sand and scuff my feet as I walk along, this is when I have heard the sound so many speak of, it has worked for me.

Love that! Thank you 🙏

I loved Islay when I visited a couple of years ago. I think I would have been leathered doing the walk between distilleries 😂😂. You were very brave.

I'm glad you enjoyed it too! I think all the whisky wore off between distilleries since it took me so long to walk! 😂
