One of my favorite whiskies is Monkey Shoulder. Named for a repetitive strain injury once common among distillery workers, who turned the malt by hand, it's a mix of Speyside whiskies (originally Balvene, Glenfiddich, and Kininvie, but the mix is no longer made public).

Love these distillery-hops. I prefer the Speysides, especially Aberlour and Balvenie. It did me a world of good to see a Japanese guy running a Scottish whisky bar and a Scotswoman speaking Japanese to him. A bright spot in otherwise troubled times.

As a post-retirement activity I worked for a few years selling liquor here in Ontario. Controlled by the provincial government, most store have an excellent selection of blends and single-malts. With my ancestry going back to Islay, I quickly became the whiskey expert in my store, and would often recommend those peaty offerings as they were also my favourites. Your adventures on Islay and Speyside would be something I’d love to experience. I also learned a few new things. Top-notch as usual, Ruth!

Glenfiddich was my introduction to single-malt whisky back in 1979 when I was a Yank going to the University of Reading and it's been my touchstone ever since. I've enjoyed many brands of Scotch since then (sometimes I want a smoky glass of Laphroig or Jura), but Glenfiddich is my default single malt. Thanks for this tour!

Glenfiddich is a beautiful distillery with all the flowers in summer, as is Aberlour, Glenlivet, Blavenie, Cragganmore, Macallan and Glenfarclas. Each distillery has it's individual beauty, uniqueness to it and being my favourites, they get drank often. Balvenie, Aberlour and Macallan all did driver packs back in 2018... P.S. Speyside and Moray are a home from home for me as I have been visiting and holidaying in this part of Scotland for 40 years. I have friends who worked in both the distilleries and the cooperage. I have visited the Spey to fish for Atlantic Salmon the only native Salmon species in the Spey although a few rouge Pink Salmon have been spotted in the last few years. The other sea going migratory fish in the river are Sea Trout which are highly prized also. I have actually fished the beat down to the Iron bridge at Aberlour without success but a friend who arrived late caught one on his first cast. I have also fished near to Rothes and did hook and land a 20lb Springer the most highly prized catch of all. I was never a fan of Whisky growing up but on my last night in Campbeltown ( another famous Whisky town) the locals put on a Whisky tasting evening for me. My favourite was a speyside malt matured in a Sherry cask which I did buy a numbered bottle and consumed with friends over a couple of very good nights. I did have a collection of Glenmorangie whisky many years ago but I gave up on that once you get to the point where bottles go for silly money. That was a very watchable film so as usual I am looking forward to the next one.

A shameless plug on my part. It was my first posting as a Bank Manager so will always be in my memories even though it is 20 years this past year since I moved from there to Stornoway. Our tasting was put on by the guy who took over the whisky store in the town that very day. I had met him in the afternoon in the Bank and had let slip I was not the biggest fan and he promised to have something for me. He brought an 80% proof dark rum that I can only describe as tasting like liquid molasses with heat. I did try to behave myself as the next day was the big pack and drive up the road for the boat but luckily I also had a removal company doing most of the hard work. Oh so many memories.@@ruthaisling

Speyside is what many think of when visiting 🏴. Fishing, beautiful countryside & whisky. Sounds a bit more commercial there but i like many of those whiskies As to not getting a hangover well not for nothing is it known as Uise gebath or water of life Ruth 😅

Very informative video. I drove up from Aberdeen to visited the Elgin area years ago, but did not go on a distillery tour. The area north and northwest of Aberdeen is a beautiful part of Scotland. I found out during a visit to Stanley, Perthshire that fishing is different than the USA. The river is divided up into beats run by a riverbank owner or estate and you pay $$$ for permission to fish the beat, usually with a guide. I like going places during the off-season, but you visited way off season. Balvenie Castle, like other Historic Scotland sites, is only open from April 1 to September 30.

That's interesting about the river and the fishing. Ah ok, good to know! There was a sign outside saying "open all year" but online it does seem to be closed during the winter season.
