I remember going into our local record store in 1981 (I was 15) and the owner motioned me over to the counter as he knew I was into heavier music. He had a box of albums he was just putting out for sale and he showed me Welcome To Hell and said it had just come in. He didn't know anything about them but from the cover and song titles, he figured they would be up my alley. I took a chance and bought it and brought it home. From the first moment the needle touched the record, I knew it was something special that would change the heavy music world...and it did. I've been a Venom fan since then, and even though they've had their ups and downs, they will always hold a special place in my musical heart. Just as Black Sabbath were the progenitors of heavy metal itself, Venom were the progenitors of thrash/black/death metal. They deserve their place in the annals of music history alongside the greatest of them all.

Welcome to Hell is an insane masterpiece! completely blew me away as Maiden/Priest/Saxon fan. Black Metal couldn’t top that shockwave, but still a great album. Also their early singles are great! Much later I discovered their demo stuff with Clive Archer on vocals, its like the bridge between Heavy Metal and the devastating sound of Welcome to Hell, brilliant work. Venom reigns supreme!

At War with Satan might be my favorite sing ever, the rest of the record is good, but that one song ... My goodness. It has everything you look for when defining a masterpiece. Its an absolute riff festival with amazing songwriting and theatrical elements. It moves almost like show tunes LMAO, you really feel the plot of the song driven by its more dramatic moments. But I digress. Venom is awesome.

Well done, again, my friend. This old-school headbanger remembers listening to WTH/BM/AWWS on my Walkman all night long. Kind of sad to see what has become of these guys, as they really were the foundation for almost all speed/thrash and certainly black metal bands thereafter. Fair ranking (as you usually do!) and agree Prime Evil hasn't been heard by enough people who class themselves as metal fans. I'd rate Fallen Angels a little higher but other than that... spot on! People forget just how shocking Venom were when they 1st came out. In the UK we had the Friday Rock Show broadcast at 10pm and the host Tommy Vance bet his fellow DJ the host of the VERY popular Mon to Fri breakfast show £100 ( a LOT back then) that he wouldn't play Venom's 'Warhead' 7" single in full on his show. Of course the money got pledged to charity and said track was indeed played, at about 8am , to approximately 20 million pop loving unsuspecting listeners many of whom had never even heard heavy metal let alone Venom before! Some people wrote in to the BBC, their local newspaper or music magazine asking if Venom were actually real!! Many could not believe a 'noise' like that would be recorded and released as official music! Well funny! Of course us kids... we 'got it'. Oh yes we got it straight away. Extreme Metal was born!!!

The first Black Metal band. And to all you youngsters who say they're not Black Metal, they made up the term so sit down kids. Back in the 80s when I was a teen, Black Metal bands were extreme metal bands that sung lyrics embracing satanism and satan. So among the fans and bands, a Black Metal band was Venom, Possessed, Slayer, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Onslaught; etc. Even the more conventional sounding heavy metal band Mercyful Fate was called Black Metal. There was a reason why Mercyful Fate was on shows opening for Venom, Slayer, Destruction; etc. instead of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest; etc., despite them not being a "thrash" band. It had to do with the lyrics and imagery. I remember an old interview during Slayer a little after Hell Awaits came out. Slayer ended up being placed on a bill in Europe with standard heavy metal bands, and his comment was: "We had a lot of people buzzing when we played, being that we're a black metal band". And friends of mine and other fans would always address bands like Sodom, Destruction, Venom, Possessed, etc. as "Black Metal". As well as many underground magazines in the mid 80s: Kick Ass. So kids need to STFU when they try to say otherwise because they were NOT there during the 1st wave of Black Metal.

As someone who got into Venom pretty recently, I’d definitely have to say Black Metal is one of the finest albums I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. Welcome To Hell is good, but I’d say it’s like Kill ‘Em All versus Ride The Lightning. KEA is good, but RTL is simply better in almost every way. I feel the same way with Venom’s Black Metal and WTH. I also have to say 80s Mantas with the stache and all black guitar is such a badass look for a musician. Venom are one of my favorites, personally. In the era of shiny and bright synth pop music, they were far, far away on the other side of the musical spectrum. Great video by the way!

It was Venom and Sodom that got me into the BM and DM genre. I honestly can´t deside which Venom album I would put as my number one. But it is Welcome To Hell or Black Metal and both albums means alot to me. But when it comes to Sodom I can definetly say that my number one Sodom album is In The Sign Of Evil. I love that album.

I don't care what anyone says, Prime Evil is a fucking great album, after all these years it's still one of my top 3 Venom albums. People often hate the Tony "Demolition Man" Dolan era, but to me it's like 80's Black Sabbath without Ozzy, it's misunderstood, ignored by many haters and it gets a lot of undeserved criticism.

Where to start? I would agree with your ranking of the eras only. I love the 1st 4 albums. I would have to go with Welcome to Hell at #1. To me it is flawless. The production properly captures the essence and the primitive nature of it. Venom was years ahead of its time and despite an uneven overall discography must be regarded as important to heavy music as Sabbath were a decade earlier. No extreme metal of any kind would exist without Venom's 1st 2 albums. And don't forget, they had a 3 song EP from 1980! The true pioneers place in metal history is secure with those of us who truly bleed heavy metal. I could go on for hours writing about them. And the fact they were a 3 piece just adds to their mystique. I love Metal Black by the way. And Resurrection. RIPRIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to hell, Black metal and At war with satan are legendary masterpieces. At war with satan had some weaker songs and track, but the title track makes the whole album by itself a 20 min war song. Black metal is like master of puppets, its one of ''those'' albums, by that I mean pretty much unbeatable and legendary and people still speak of them til this very days. Though welcome to hell was recorded in a weird way in a studio that usualy do non metal/rock albums the recording quality gives it its identity, and the album is full of awesome song, actually every song in both welcome to hell and black metal is amazing. And as a plus if you get a new copy of welcome to hell, black metal and at war with satan you also get all the demos and singles with the cd. Like Nightmare, warhead, manitau, seven gates of hell and even radio studio recording of some songs. So much value in a single disc. Thats a nice list, though I would personally put Resurrection and Calm before the storm higher. Calm before the storm has like a almost glam feeling to some of the song, but in a darker way. Black Xmas is a great opening song and shows that chronos can do some vibrato singing, metal punks has like solos all over the songs and it ending solo is so cool. Under a spell is cheesy with two vocalist singing along, though I still love it. The title track calm before the storm has an awesome solo. The song fire has like sections were the drums are like almost blast beating and it sounds like grindcore. Resurrection has some awesome songs and solos, resurrection, war against christ, all there is fear, pandemonium, fireflight, control freak and leviathan are such great songs.
@RuthlessMetalYT

yes, resurrection is pretty solid, it's just more modern sounding than those earlier records and I prefer that sound.

I'm not a fan of ranking albums in general and regarding Venom I really like all of their albums. I completely agree though that the first three albums are the best, together with the singles from that era. There was a time when I only wanted to hear the more recent albums and at other times I get nostalgic for the Tony Dolan era.

Venom stole their sound from the first crust punk band Amebix apparently, I read they sent their demo to Cronos, and Cronos said something along the lines of "nice sound, we're nicking it". Funny story, listen to Arise by Amebix, same sound, just more bassey and less riff heavy.
@RuthlessMetalYT
@RuthlessMetalYT 3 жыл бұрын
I mean, Amebix had only one demo out before Venom stepped unto the scene. That demo is more or less just straight up punk so I don't think we should give them more credit than what they deserve, Angel Witch had a demo from the late 70s that was more metal and more creepy.

Funny story I actually met the guitarist who played on Metal Black (Mike Hickey) man was he a fucking douchebag!!! He had a rockstar attitude and I asked him why he was no longer with them. “None of your business” he said. I also asked him if he got alot of groupies which pissed him off for some reason (Probably cuz he didn’t get any I’m guessing lol). I know he also played on Calm Before the Storm. That album was actually not terrible but not great some cool songs though. The Dolan era that followed was much better imo. I have yet to hear the reunion era of the late 90’s. I heard Hell from 08’ and what a snoozefest that was. Anything after that I’ve been afraid to hear.

Here we go...Venom aka my fav band in the early eighties...I don't give a damn about what critics said about their "rawness and roughness", the low-production of "Welcome to hell" (that probably gave its force at the highest rank - same thing happened with exciter's "HM maniac" and Voivod's "War and pain" - still i prefer these rough and straight-to-your-face (or ears) kind of approach than super-mega-soopa-doopa productions elsewhere (Iron maiden's ?) which deprives the music beloved by us of its power and strenght. Well...as you correctly said, they invented a new genre, NO-THING else was like them, back in 1981...Venom did crush Motorhead's status of "the fastest metal band on earth)...I'd add, respect to what you said, all their AWESOME works on 45 rpm and mini-albums as "Die hard", "Warhead", "Bursting out", "7 gates of hell". "Acid queen", "Nightmare", even "Manitou"...were excellent tracks!I'd ike even to add the semi-unknown song called "Senile decay" that would have been published on "Black Metal" and it would have been filled-in PERFECTLY!!!!!! It wasn't just the music..it was even the SHROUD of mistery that enveloped the infernal trio that did put up such a massive following...they didn't release any interview, back in 1981...mistery and darkness, it seemed like they were into an occult part of the world and an eerie aura did follow them...the "7 dates of hell" was a mythical tour...they did show theirselves for the first time..."To hell and back", "Sacrifice", "Leave me in Hell", "Buried alive", "Teacher's pet", "Countess Bathory"...."Sons of Satan", "Schitzo", "Witching hour" and especially "1000 days in Sodom"....aaaaaaahhh...."At war with satan"...an authentic Masterpiece....dozens of riffs...several tempos...acustic guitars and even a female vocal... incredible lyrics..."Cry wolf"...aaahhh...excellence...and the ONLY track that could be bonded with "Black metal"... Of curse, for one like me, Venom ARE only Mantas-Abaddon and Cronos of the era between 1981 to 1985...all what happened afterward...wasn't the same, even if "Prime Evil" is realle a good and strong album, indeed! Terrible and letterally OBSCENE was "The calm before the storm"...rubbish to be thrown into the trash-bin, without doubt. Cronos-ego did ruin it all from 1985 on...just alike mr Demaio with Manowar...what a pity...............well, let's enjoy what they have done Good for the joy of our Ears!!!!!
