Unedited raw footage from 14.19 to 15.11 showing a headless fish suddenly breaking loose from Maya as she feeds the two chicks, squashing the chicks, and breaking the third egg. The egg is shown to be addled, so that means it's just the two Osplets for Maya & Blue 33 this year. But both chicks are both strong and healthy, and growing by the hour. Actually the fish, a perch, only appears to be headless, poor thing was obviously still alive although Maya had been tearing into it, starting as usual with the mouth (21:32). She seemed bemused when it broke loose, and let it flap on top of the chicks until dad Blue 33 returned and intervened (46:30) after which she tidied up the eggshell and settled back down to brood the two chicks. Was the fish still alive although with most of its head gone? Or was it just the automatic reflexes still present, as seen in lizard tails which have been autotomised to allow the actual lizard to escape while the predator concentrates on the writhing detached tail?

Thanks to generous donations to our Osprey Webcam Appeal last year, we have now installed brand new camera equipment. Our new webcams give a better view and can zoom, pan, and tilt! Not only this, but we have made sure the new system incorporates sound, giving you a fuller experience and deeper insight into the behaviour of breeding ospreys! So make sure you turn the sound up!
