In the first part of this two part video we are going to look at how I approach and individual fly fishing competition. The target species is Rainbow Trout but Brown Trout will count but must be returned to the water unharmed. I will be looking to find out three key ingredients that will help me be succesfull in the match. Where are the fish on the lake, what depth are they sitting and the best way to tempt them to your net!

Great to see you back on Rutland and finding good sport. A mutiple hookup can be fun but on Rutland the fish will often bust you up. Looking forwards for the match days in part two. Also hope you can get several more trips on Rutland during this year. With some old friends.

Great video. We were down the same 3 days. The boat on Ernie's point was one of ours. The fishing was great the Tuesday just a shame the weather didn't get any better over the 3 days.

⁠@@lindsayiflyfishI preferred the smaller lake just above Kielder. In the last season before they stopped fishing on it I had some of my most productive boat sessions on Bakethin including some absolutely perfect silvered brown trout that looked like they had spawned in the feeder streams. So many caught and safely released. I hope that the water is reopened to fly fishing.

Hi Tony, this was back in April so I don't quite remember the detail but the water was crystal clear and I was fishing barbless. They just came off.

How do you manage with 15+ ft long leaders and tippet Length at the rod tip please ? Without getting in a mess in the rod rings ? Thank you and good luck .

Hi Brian, the leader length in total is 20' as the water was so clear I was only fishing with three flies. So, from my top dropper to my fly line there is 10' of tippet from there 5' to the middle dropper and then a further five feet to the point. If you catch a fish on the point fly then you bring your line in until the top fropper is a few inches from the rod tip. Hope that makes sense.

In this video I was using Asso 8.2lb Fluorocarbon straight through no taper.
