Footballers usually are tied to their positions, they strictly stick to the area of the play that their positions give them, however there was one footballer who quite literally broke that rule and could play virtually anywhere on any position and his name is Ruud Gullit, arguably the most complete player this sport has ever seen.
In Today's Episode I talked about Ruud Gullit and his career, from FC Harleem to Feynoord with Cruyff, from PSV To AC Milan, how he captained his national team to their first ever trophy and how he became one of the most decorated player the sport has ever seen

Thank you for this excellent documentary on a legendary player who I grew up watching. I remember one night in 1989,I was 12 years old and had stayed up to watch Champions League Final that AC Milan was contesting. My father has just bought a VCR so we recorded the final live as it was played so we could watch the game again. On that night we saw Gullit bang 2 goals and we were rooting for him,I remember jumping with joy seeing him lift that Champions league trophy, little did I know that he had played with a knee injury. Gullit was not just a footballer,he was an icon and during the 80s apartheid was causing instability in Mozambique and many of us living in the region of southern Africa felt effects of that,so we held Gullit in such high esteem as he spoke out against apartheid regime,by 1992 the Regime had collapsed. His legacy is safe and it will only get better as more information comes to light,he is also first Black Manager to ever win a major Trophy in British football history, this considering the lack of black managers in football today,so Gullit was a trail blazer. Those of us who were blessed to watch him play live at his prime will never forget his athleticism, sprints and dreadlocks flying in the air as he fires a shot into the net with either right or left foot,or smash a powerful header into goal, what a phenom he was.

The Dutch usually talk about Cruijff, but this golden tulip and modest man was from another dimension. It was all power, flexibility and technique that you rarely see on the fields. Ruud Gullit Legendary player loved him as a kid Legend...

I loved him until I met him, in Sloane street, March 99. I think it was 10 A.M., breakfast time. If it was later, he would have been swarmed. He was with the blonde girl and her son. You knew it was him straight away, even from behind. I thought I was slim, same height. He had a boy waist and the arrogance was disgusting. He did, maybe, 10 or twelve autographs. It was long enough for me to run to the Stockpot in Basil street, to grab a menu for the signing and get back to him for extra time. He never looked at anybody, signed like a machine gun and was off. The autograph got discarded. I didn't throw it away. Lost interest in him, completely. That has been my experience with all of these "phenomenal" characters!!

I was 9 years old in 74 on the Dutch island texel enjoying a soccer camp when Holland lost the WK final against Germany. In 78 we lost in Argentina against Argentina. South Africa was nr 3. Knowing I'm rolling into the ground without that cup is nasty twisted in a way u can't emagin. That semi final against Germany when van Basten slide in that 2-1 was a nuclear explosion just unreal. I ended up at a police station sore from top to bottom in a blur. Gullit is a regular chilled dude. The holland 80s was special in every way!! P. S. Rest in peace Diego Armando Maradona. Loved this documentary and the research done. Haven’t seen a truly elite all rounder like this since those days. From my research the most ‘total’ of footballers was Di Stefano, the key man who made Real Madrid the European Cup standard bearers they are. Would be nice to see a documentary of your quality on him to enlighten those of us who don’t know him.

At his peak, Ruud Gullit was the best player on the planet. It was great watching him at Chelsea towards the end of his career and so many top European players were interested to join English football because he came. I think he had an under-stated impact on the premier league we see today, just think: he was the 1st over-seas manager to win a major British trophy, there have been 'quite a few' since!

MUDA LAWAL WAS NIGERIA'S FIRST COMPLETE PLAYER Somewhere in South Western Nigeria in the 1970s, there was another complete player called Muda Lawal who could play anywhere on the pitch and excelled in those positions. He played most of his playing career for IICC Shooting Stars of Ibadan, Stationary Stores of Lagos and Abiola Babes of Abeokuta. In 1976, he helped IICC Shooting Stars to their first continental title, winning the African Cup Winners Cup - the first Nigerian clubside to do so. Lawal was part of the victorious squad that won AFCON for Nigeria at home in 1980 for the first time. He had 86 caps for the team where his last appearance was in August 1985 against Zambia in a Egypt 1986 AFCON qualifier. Lawal had the record for the most capped Nigerian player for many years before Nwankwo Kanu equaled it in 2010 and Joseph Yobo surpassing it to make it 100 in 2014. Lawal was an indigene of Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State in South West Nigeria where a stadium in Asero was named after him. Past and present musicians have sang of his football prowess making him a cult hero among football fans in Nigeria in the 1970s and 1980s when he was active. He unfortunately passed away in 1991 at the age of 37 in Ibadan. 🇳🇬 ⚽️🇳🇬⚽️🇳🇬⚽️🇳🇬

PELE WAS THE BEST AND HERE IS THE PROOF. 1. He could score with either leg. He scored over 1,000 goals, goals of all types, colors and shapes. From outside the box, inside the box, volleys, scissor kicks, diving headers, soft, hard, over the goalie's reach, upper corner, lower corner. You think of it, he did it. 2. He was excepcional with headers. He would usually out jump taller defenders. He was like a fish in midair, able to get higher once he jumped. Observe carefully his header-goal against Italy in the finals of the World Cup México 1970. 3. Physically, he was impecable. Strong, fast, quick, powerful, with remarkable endurance. 4. Technically, Pelé was masterful. His control was awe inspiring. Pelé made it look easy, natural, joyous. He could dribble past a cloud of defenders like a hot knife through butter. 5. Tactically, Pelé had no flaws. He would move knowingly on the field, commanding his teammates, understanding where they would be, occupying spaces, opening the game as needed. Watch him control and blindingly pass the ball to Carlos Alberto for Brazil's fourth goal in the final against Italy in the World Cup México 1970. Simply delicious! 6. He was courageous. Most of the time, when he stepped on the field, Pelé was a marked man. Teams would have their top defender shadow him constantly. He played most of his career without the benefit of the disciplinary cards, they were instituted in 1970, Pelé's last World Cup. The referee's "culture" of the time, allow for much more rough play. Pelé learn to defend himself against tough defenders and never backed down. 7. Pelé played on fields that were not the best by today's standards. The ball would bounce here an there, responding to the unevenness and holes on the field. It was much more difficult to make a good pass, much more difficult to control the ball and yet, Pelé shone with the light of a genius. 8. Pelé won many national titles, international titles and the World Cup three times. He is still today the youngest player to play in a World Cup final (17 years old at Sweden 1958) and score (two goals). 9. Finally, Pelé was FIFA's best ambassador of the game. An example for the youth of the future and most decent human being. And who could beat that smile? I saw him score the most remarkable goal I have ever witnessed... Lima was all up in a buzz as the news spread like wild fire about the arrival of Santos of Brazil with Pelé. Santos was going to play against Alianza Lima the Peruvian champion. The excitement increased as Alianza announced the hiring of an Uruguayan defender named Souza just for the match. Souza's job, of course, was to shadow Pelé all game long. Alianza paid Souza the enormous amount (in those days) of $500 dollars just for the one game, all other expenses (travel, stay, etc.) covered. It was summer, so the game was going to be played at night at the "Estadio Nacional." As the game progressed, Souza, a tall, black, strong and agile player was doing a very good job of shadowing Pelé. Souza, being from Uruguay, was schooled in the ways and manners of their style of play. That is, all nonsense and as rough as the referee would allow and more. It was almost half time, Pelé was next to the touch line near midfield watching his goalie kick the ball long and high. As the ball fell towards him, Pelé smoothly chess trapped it and allow it to roll down onto the field in front of him. Souza jumped on the ball but Pelé was first. With his back towards Souza, Pelé heeled the short bounce of the ball over Souza's head. Fast as lightening, Pelé turned around, his eyes riveted on the ball as it was falling down passed Souza. He quickly realized that Villanueva, Alianza's goalkeeper, about forty meters away, was way out of his line. In a flash, Pelé volley the ball. It described a laser like parabola over the surprised humanity of Villanueva and into the back of the net! It was magnificent! Extraordinary! Amazing! An instant hush fell all over the stadium, as if all those human minds needed time to really process and accept was they had just witnessed. And then, then, everybody stood up and applauded and applauded and applauded. I still can hear them. Father, may you rest in peace, thank you for taking me that night to the stadium. Your loving son, always. Pelé, Pelé WAS AND IS THE BEST!
