I love how this death scene was beautifully made, with the peacocks there. It emphasizes Gao Xiyue's noble birth, high-rank, pride and physical beauty, but at the same time denounces her bitterness and arrogance that were all for nothing, and she comes to terms with that. One of the most amazing death scenes in the series, next to Imperial Concubine Mei's, Noble Consort Chun's, Ruyi's and Noble Consort Jia's.

That was the social norm back then unfortunately. Early in the series, Ruyi talks to the Italian court painter who tells her that in Italy/Europe, it’s the norm to only have one wife. Ruyi later goes back to the Emperor and relays this information, hoping he’d find it interesting but he just scoffed at the idea, calling it completely crazy. Ruyi was a bit annoyed by this reaction.
