You made a good case when you pointed out that if Empresses in the Palace was told from An Lingrong 's point of view, then Zhen Huan would have been the villain. Chinese dramas are brilliant in how every character basically has a sad sob story to tell, and good and evil are defined by who the protagonist is.

Thought about going into more detail about the differences between these two shows (like the previous Zhenhuan -> RuYi video) but it makes more sense to do that after I’ve actually done the recaps since I have to rewatch the show in order to do a proper comparison. As for the series itself, I’ll finish it all and then upload rapidly like I did this last time. That means it’ll be a long-ish break (not a year!) but it’s a lot less stress knowing that the videos are up and if anything happens it won’t affect uploads. I promise I’ll keep you guys updated! Meanwhile, I’m still making my way through comments so if you’ve asked me a specific question or something and I haven’t responded yet, that’s most likely why :) I’ll take this time to go through and respond where I can. So hyped! This feels like I’m waiting for the next season of a show! Forget Bridgerton S3 I need DramaRecaps next season! Honestly, I love the messages and lessons in both Ruyi and Yanxi. I bet the IRL version is somewhere in the middle of both versions. Honestly Ruyi in Yanxi isn’t even that bad, she’s just a person driven to insanity by unreturned and undervalued love from a man who doesn’t deserve her. The best harem drama is New Life Begins (40 episodes 🎉) and a Republic Era drama is Legacy (2022) by the same company that does Yanxi Palace.

I never watched Ruyi’s Royal love on my own and instead watched through your drama recaps I did this specifically bc I wanted a new perspective as someone who although started with yanxi palace first and was very happy to see the main lead maintain cold and calculated persona in the palace and diving headfirst into the plots and schemes. A lot of people compare ruyi and yinglou and also compare ruyi’s loyal love and yanxi I never really understood the comparison as they are both strong woman but are different in a lot of ways so I’m glad you’re going to be doing a recap on it.

One thing I would say about ruyi’s Royal love and yanxi is that I empathize with a lot of the “villains” bc at the end of the day you’re stuck in the palace fighting for your life and your clans while barely maintaining your sanity.

Sooo pumped! I’m so impatient, I’m very eager to get your views overall on the series. Just a few observances I have from watching Yanxi and comparing it to other historical dramas for those who have never watched Yanxi before or maybe even other dramas: When I first watched Yanxi and then Ruyi, I was confused about how the same historical figures could be portrayed so differently. Then I did some digging and realized that in the Qing Dynasty, basically all that was recorded of the harem women was their clan name, their ranking, if they had children, and when they died. This means that literally everything else is up for interpretation since there’s so little personal information about them. So don’t be surprised if the characters are completely opposite in personality than they would be in other dramas. Secondly, if you’re really into historically accurate dramas then apparently Yanxi is not that. I’m no expert in Chinese history, but from others who know more about it, watching Yanxi and expecting good historical accuracy would be like watching Bridgeton and expecting a documentary on the Regency Period. So just enjoy it for the good story that it is. We’re in for a real fun time, ya’ll! I’m also rewatching the series myself so I’m all refreshed as well!

Yanxi Palace, the little sister of Legend of Ruyi! Personally, I perferred Ruyi over Yanxi, but I will admit that this drama is much more on the lighthearted and humorous side, while still having serious moments and compelling storylines. The different interpretations of the historical figures by the different shows are also interesting to watch and compare. So excited for this new series (and internally bracing for the whiplash that will occur when I start rooting for the first Empress!)

I watched first Yanxi and later Ruyi back in 2020. But I watched first Yanxi (the princess story in Netflix) and I fell for Yinglou even if she is not the main character there but her personality and savage ways were so amazing to me so I had to know more about her and then by googling I discovered that actually yanxi was a whole drama, and just like that I spend all my days during the pandemic lol watching and loving Yinglou. I simply love it!

I actually watched Yanxi Palace first and was thus hesitant to watch Ruyi's Royal Love when I realized the main boss villainess of Yanxi Palace was actually the protagonist/heroine. I got over that real quick since I have a love of harem dramas (would you consider doing recaps of some Korean harem dramas?) and alas there isn't a whole lot of them that I can find translated for me watch. I wound up falling in love with Ruyi's Royal Love too, even though it's so darker than Yanxi Palace and left me with bittersweet feeling. And having watched both dramas, it makes me wonder how each story would have differed of their counterpart in the other drama was in the other. Like Wei Yinglou, would have to be working hard to counter Ruyi's Jia.

Ahhh, Yanxi Palace 💕 When I remind myself to not take it as seriously and just kick back and have some fun, it's really top tier entertainment! I just prefer the more heart-wrenching drama 90% of the time ;) Favorite characters: Fuca Rongyin, the absolute QUEEN of EVERYTHING, she is perfection, poise, and fragile strength Shu when she's badly lying to try and cover her own ass Chun and her Hailan-arch from unwilling concubine to coldly calculating consort, but Actually Evil (I will defend Hailan until the End Times) Gao, especially every time she's silently fuming and does it so well you swear there's actual steam coming out her ears and last but not least... Erqing. Hands down the WORST maid-turned-villain character EVER, I hate her with the passion of a thousand overheated suns!!! Forget A'Ruo or Huanbi - they can't even compare to the shadow of Erqing's left little finger, she's so *v i s c i o u s*

I personally have tried to avoid Yanxi Palace for the simple fact that I don't know if I can manage that transition in the characters after being so committed to Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace, especially because I love Ruyi's character so much but if you make videos about it for sure i will watch them, this is one of my favorite KZbin channels your style is just great, so... who knows? maybe I'll give this new drama a chance. Originally when I watched Yanxi compared to Ruyi I felt ready to hate it because I admired Ruyi so much. Yanxi does a really good job of making Ruyi seem like a person instead of martyr or saint. She’s a real person who loves the emperor and even admires Yinglou’s audacity. Even then, Yinglou is pitiful in someways to because she values revenge more than love. There’s many good life lessons in both.

Honestly and truly, I think you should watch it. It’s a very good story and I can tell you from having watched both that you will see a lot of similarities between Ruyi and Empress Fucha. If Ruyi had had Yinglou to back her… well, let’s just say her story would have turned out quite differently.

While I don't like Yanxi as much because I find Yinglou to be a bit of a Mary Sue who always turns out to be playing 4D Chess when you think she's in real trouble, I greatly appreciate it for showing a very different side of harem life. Yinglou is an embroidery maid, a palace maid, personal maid to the Empress, a workhouse maid, a maid in YuanMing Yuan, etc, for a large part of the drama, and we get to view the harem from the servant's side instead of through the eyes of a noble lady who's never had to work a day in her life. We get to see how servants live, their minor dramas, their struggles, and how quickly your whole life could change based on the whims of your masters. It's *refreshing* to see a completely different point of view than Ruyi/ZhenHuan/most palace dramas show us. Also, once Yinglou makes the switch and joins the ranks of the concubines, we don't have to deal with a scared & naïve newbie who falls into traps and fears stepping wrong, instead we get to watch a hardened veteran with determination and a clear (if lofty) agenda. I do appreciate all of that, I just wish Yinglou wasn't always Superwoman Extraordinaire so I actually worried for her safety when she appears to be in trouble.

Ruyi is my fave C-drama, but frankly it is amazing that Yanxi Palace makes me change my mind over the most hated person in RuYi's RLIP, Qianlong. WHO would have thought that THAT dude had any possibility to be in my opinion the perfect male lead??!! He is still arbitrary in his favours, and quite cruel in his punishments, but he doesn't believe people saying random crap at him and he has this comedy aspect that makes him just adorable. Yingluo is just my utter murderous spirit animal.

The primary difference of Ruyi's royal love and Yanxi palace is the portrayal of the characters. In Ruyi the characters are evil but mostly tragic, you will hate them but you cannot lament about their motivation and feel bad about them. The one you will hate the most is the emperor because he is instigating all of these when he could have solved it himself. Yanxi palace is different it centers around Wei Yinglou and how she is special enough that the emperor disregarding all the harem women for her because the emperor is not shown that annoying as Ruyi's. It's different in Ruyi's because of the class difference between them because Ruyi is from a noble family she is educated and tactful while Wei Yanwan is not. Ruyi was emperor's childhood friend loved him so she didn't need to climb the social ladder so that's why she could stay passive and be all that noble. While Yanwan couldn't afford it, she had no backing from court to influence the emperor so she had to rely on her seduction and other methods. You can say Ruyi's story centers around the plot while Yanxi palace centers around character. However since my personal preference is grey characters who are tragic I would prefer Ruyi a bit more I even like this version of Yingluo because it actually shows how much disposable women are in the system and to the emperor. That the real villain was not that scary Imperial Noble Consort but the emperor. That nobody should love him sincerely or trust him blindly and especially not fight for his favour. Everyone in the end regretted it.

Yeah! I was hoping you would tackle "Yanxi Palace", i just finished rewatching it (again) :). It seems I watch "Empresses in the Palace" which leads to "Ruyi..." which leads to "Yanxi..." at least once a year. I can not wait for you to begin!

I watched both dramas when they were released on Viki/Drama Feaver at the same time. It was crazy. The only time I chased two currently airing dramas at the same time.
