I’ve been using a Mofi for 2 years with Amazing results. I hooked a parabolic 24 dbi antenna and I tripled my speeds. My parabolic actually pulls a much better signal than my mimo system. I don’t need an app to find the best signal I simply log into the Mofi router and watch the signal strength as I turn the antenna ,

I was considering the MOFI4500-4GXELTE-SIM4_COMBO or the NETGEAR Nighthawk MR1100 router until I saw your excellent presentation. My home in the country has been "Blessed" with promised SIX Megabit/sec while typically realizing THREE Megabit for Waaaay too long. I don't have an RV but I really would like to enjoy REAL Hi-Speed internet at home in my retirement years. I don't have Verizon here but I'm only 1.02 mi from an AT&T tower that I can see from my bedroom window. Even paying one of the several "Unlimited" Services will cost less than what I'm paying now. So, you've really done me a solid and I thank you, thank you, thank you...

I am a ham Radio guy and use the LMR 400 coax for low line loss. I note in your video that you aren’t using any self fusing tape on your coax connectors to keep water out of the coax. If you please, Do a search on Amazon for “coax water tight tape” for examples : Note: if water enters the coax connections it will travel down your cable and can cause signal losses or worse. Good video by the way:

Man, thanks for sharing all this great information in a such easy way. Already subscribed, liked and enabled notifications. This was the best video I've ever watched about internet performance on RV's. I found in the past the the Mofi unit you referenced, but I decided to go with WiFi Ranger GoAC and WeBoost for RV and my iPhone as a hotspot. I really like your set up. My booster behaves exactly like yours, so no big benefit there. I was planning to invest on the external wifi antena for the WiFi Ranger, but maybe it is better to go with the Mofi connected via Ethernet to the Wifi Ranger. It is a different approach but might work really well. Thank you, really appreciate it.

I'm not a road warrior, however, this video has helped quite a bit with the set up I'm working on in my new home that's a few miles down the road from BFE. The only "option" for internet is Hughes, which really isn't an option for the internet speeds I'll need. The local phone carrier has NO internet service at all. (That's how far out in the boonies I am ). They say they are working on it and maybe sometime soon they'll have it. Thus my adventure into setting up my own internet service. The phone app for finding signals is a bit better than the one I was "trying" to use. The info on the using the phone on a wifi network I had no idea about. I'm anxious to head back to my new home and try that out because our calls now are sometimes shaky especially if there is some bad weather around. I'm in the middle of moving from the old house to the new house...BLEH. So far I've set up a MOFI router using the same type of antennas and wiring. I have my antennas on the top floor of the house pointing out a window. I'm looking for an electrician to run the wiring for me when I mount it on the roof. My initial set up was pulling in around 20 mbs. It seemed to fluctuate during some bad weather passing through. I'm guessing this is normal considering the nearest cell tower to me is approximately 2 miles away, however, my house is surrounded by very tall trees. I'm going to try using the same antenna set up, or my version of it and hope that pulls in some faster speeds. Nice video and thanks for posting this. Very interesting.

Thanks for the great information. I stumbled upon your video, after watching MANY other videos on this subject. The vast majority recommend the Weboost products, so I was planning to go that route. Your approach is more appealing to me, because I’ve wanted wifi inside the RV to be like wifi in our house - available and strong-signal in each “room.” I never liked that idea of internal/external antenna interference and the need to confine the internal (boosted) signal to a small area inside the RV........My question is about the MOFI modem and Verizon. Like you, I have the Verizon grandfathered unlimited data plan. But I’ve always just used my phone + the Android FoxFi app to create my mobile hotspot. I never have purchased a standalone hotspot device, because 1) I didn’t want to change my plan and risk losing the grandfathered, unlimited data and 2) I didn’t want to pay an additional monthly fee. Could you explain how you configure the MOFI to work on your Verizon plan (you inserted a card?), the Verizon costs involved in that, and potential impacts to your grandfathered data plan?........Again, I really appreciate your help and great video! I subscribed and am also interested in your approach to RV storage and … how the heck you travel with all those bicycles. I’ll be traveling with 3 mountain bikes and 1 dirt/motorbike, and have not figured out yet how that’s going to happen!

Thanks for the question! We ended up getting a cheap Tracfone LTE sim card and will swap that with the Verizon phone we are using for internet at the moment. Usually, I (Nick) will take the SIM out of my iPhone, (before I do, I will setup call forwarding to forward calls to the tracfone number. Then I will put my Verizon sim in the MOFI, put the trafone sim in my iPhone and away we go. I'll have to do a follow up video to touch on that process as I forgot to mention that part in the video. We are taking a bit of a break from traveling and videos at the moment, but I'm planning on doing the bike video next. Should be a good one (hopefully) as it's probably the thing I talk about most with people on the road :) Thanks again Denice and glad to have you with us!

For clarity you can go and get about any Unlimited data [SIM] card from say Best Buy (have both AT&T and T-Mobile) and set the emulation to Linux/65 (for the time out) and the MoFi will appear as a handset/tablet to the carrier and your in. With T-Mobile, past 50 gig (which is a fair amount) they will throttle you back during peak times but not non-peak so this is really great!

Hi Nick :) Great Video :) Hey, I am a two way radio enthusiast, and I noticed that you have a couple of walkie talkies charging in the cabinet where you have your MoFi mounted. They look like either GMRS or Ham talkies. May I ask what those are?

John Overturf - they are baofeng radios we bought on Amazon. I am licensed GMRS which covers our family usage on the bands. These radios are technically not FCC ‘approved’ but they operate within the power and frequencies of GMRS so I am good using them as they are cheap and the kids normally carry them around and tend to drop stuff :)

I did find out though, that the BTech GMRS-V1 is an FCC Part 95A radio. I do have in mind to get one of these, but I also want to get a 2M/440 Ham HT where I can also program in GMRS Freq's. Note...Seeing they are directional antennas, not very good for using while in motion at all. You would be better off with this and another high gain omni 4G antenna and switch between them based on if you are traveling or not. :)

Actually we have pretty good luck with signal when on the road even with them down and pointing back. It’s probably because signal is overall good when on the major highways:)

That surely may be, but surely you would be much better off in that case with an Omni. For your surely know a directional antenna is just that...Directional. Sure you get bleed over and sure it would work to some extent, but you would have better range with an Omni when on the move. That is unless the tower is behind you. Than you will do really well. :-)

Hey Jeff - yes MOFI does say that is an acceptable way to go. If you use one antenna you SHOULD be able to pull in the signal well and get good speeds, but you might not get the carrier aggregation or top upload speeds if you had 2. I would give that one antenna a try and if you like it (and aren't as bandwidth crazy as I am) stick with it, cause you can always add another antenna down the road. Hope that helps!

Very informative. You can also do skype calls but I'm not sure if the video would be any good. It would be great if you could tell us some mileage from the towers. I think it could get a little in depth because different frequencies travel farther than others and some are affected by trees, buildings and hills than others. That's why 5G has to be installed everywhere. Are you getting 50 to 100 miles with your antennas? Do you ever experience a noticeable slow down because a cell tower might be heavily used? You do have a throttle clause on your account even though it is unlimited I would assume. Going to the app store and trying to pick good app is almost impossible because they don't really tell you much. So a name drop on your favorite apps for tower information would be nice. Thanks for the video.

Is there any updates to your setup? We are purchasing our first motorhome/rv and hitting the road in June and need the best possible internet. Currently discussing sponsorship opportunities with several different internet carriers but not sure what setup would be the best. We are assuming Verizon would be our best bet and then getting something to boost the signal. We use a ton of data to upload footage for our video editor, typically 10-20gb a day and we upload the footage overnight. We will usually be staying at RV parks for a week or two at a time and trying to find parks with the best WiFi speeds. However, i know that won't be possible everywhere we go and need a solid setup of our own. Just wondering if your setup could handle that much data per day or what the best setup would be. Thanks for the great video!
@WeCanExploreIt
@WeCanExploreIt 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the note. We are on the road now and are still using the same setup as shown in the video. It's been working really great. As far as what it can handle, the mofi unit won't be the bottleneck for speed and throughput, the connection you have at that time will be. I have been able to upload videos all the time, and some were slow, and some were fast. I can tell you that we are in the Orlando area now and the speeds are not that good. It's not that we don't have a good signal, it's that there are too many users in the area. So, your mileage will vary. Thanks!

Looks awesome, I just bought a Weboost and it does okay. It get 1-2ish bars where there was 1x or less but its pretty slow still. I am not that tech savvy but would adding better antennas, like what you have there, to my weboost help? I know the weboost is omnidirectional but I am not sure that is really a good thing sometimes.

@WeCanExploreIt 6 жыл бұрын
You can definitely try a directional yagi type antenna for the weboost. You won’t be able to do the MIMO (the slanted antennas), so you won’t need 2. You can just do one vertical. Check out the antenna on the blog page and see if that’s the end that you have on your weboost. I’m guessing it’s not, so in that case just do a search on amazon for weboost yagi and you should find what you need. Thanks!

You are only as good as the signal you can get. In other words, you can not boost if you have nothing to boost. As such, weBoost works wonders to bring the signal inside if you can receive a signal. And yes, if you use a yagi antenna, aka..directional antenna, you will ALWAYS be better off as you are focusing to the direction you are pointed in thus you can receive and transmit better. (Like using a bullhorn) So using and pointing a Yagi will improve the weBoost as the weBoost has something then TO boost as the signal will be better. But you MUST be pointed correctly and this this will not work while moving. BTW...This has NOTHING to do with Wi-Fi and everything to do with 4G cell. Don't confuse the two. You need different gear to try to get better Wi-Fi in an RV park.

In your opinion or experience can the cable tv / satellite tv coax cable connections provided by Airstream and most RV manufacturers be utilized to connect the mofi4g duel external antenna you show to boost the signal? I’m trying to avoid running additional cable if the existing coax can be used instead. Thanks

Randall for the mofi cable rg6 coax won’t work well as it’s the wrong impedance. Coax is 75 ohm and the antennas are looking for 50 ohm wire. I know that stuff seems silly but some scientist somewhere figured this stuff out :)

Hey Nick, one additional question. Does your setup have any issue with cross-talk between the externally mounted antenna and the internal MOFI broadcast? That issue has come up in a few other videos I've watched, that use the Weboost Drive product (instead of the MOFI or similar device). I think the difference is that the Weboost is amplifying & re-broadcasting the 4G/LTE signal, whereas your setup with the MOFI is taking the 4G/LTE incoming signal and converting it to a wifi signal, and broadcasting the wifi. So that means there would be no cross-talk or interference, like the type the Weboost users can experience. Could you please comment? Thank you!
@WeCanExploreIt

denice flannery - yes that is exactly right - there is no risk of cross talk with the signals because it’s not trying to ‘boost’ a signal.

I never used any of the new Wilson stuff (like the WeBoost). Since the Wilson 4g booster didn't work well for me, I went looking for a different option instead of trying their newer stuff. Those I talked to with the WeBoost seemed to have the same 'mixed' results that I did with the 4g booster I used. So far, this Mofi has been the most solid thing I've used on the road. Even since I did this vid, it's been running strong and I keep it always on in the RV.

Great video! Yes, the MoFi is overpriced. I bought one for a friends fixed 4G installation, but honestly I think that a NetGear Nitehawk MR1100 gives a lot more bang for the buck. I haven't seen used or refurbished MoFi's anywhere, but you can get MR1100's (new-open box) on eBay for $130. The MR1100 also supports 4x4 Mimo and carrier aggregation. I've compared the specs closely and the MR1100 is actually superior to the MoFi in some ways. It's also a lot more versatile. The only small advantage that the MoFi has is the ability to lock specific bands. That can help in certain situations, but often it doesn't. The MR1100 does have the ability to lock out band regions, but not specific bands. (maybe in a future firmware update) If you connect a pair of cross polarized 11dBi Yagis to the MR1100 you will get incredible speeds. I have mine mounted in a NEMA enclosure right behind the antennas, and then run the Ethernet down the mast and into my indoor router. For those looking for the cheapest unlimited data - investigate the AT&T prepaid iPad Dataconnect plan. This plan is somewhat hidden and there are actually several business out there that resell it as a huge markup. You need a 4G enabled iPad or Android tablet IMEI to signup (your don't need an actual tablet). It's $29.99/mo unlimited data with auto-renew. They say the pass is subject to network management after 22GB, but unless you are in a congested area, you'll probably never see even a temporary slowdown. I've used hundreds of GB/mo and others have said that they've used several TB/mo.

So I think the best way to explain it is that the problem is in the software. We have to go up the road half a mile to get good reception. So I'm stuck paying for home internet. If we could figure this out I could pay my Dad for internet and drop the home stuff. Would the Mofi and/or the antenna setup you have work for picking up 4g even if just a regular apartment and would Mofi work with the regular phone sim or do you need something special? If you could get the antennas outside and pointing in the tower direction you may be able to get a better signal. The important part is that you have to have *some* signal in your apartment area that the MOFI can pick up. Another thing is that the mofi doesn’t come with a power adapter so you’ll want to search for one on Amazon.

I immediately bought one of these routers when I saw your video. First, it took 10 days to ship and another 3 to sort out the SIGNATURE REQUIRED on delivery (we full time RV). Second I inserted a Verizon JetPack unlimited prepay sim with 4 bars of signal (we can see the tower) and there was NO CHANGE in speed on any band. WHY? Because in many rural locations everyone is hooked to the same "slow" cell tower; you get great internet speed at 2 AM which then crawls to a halt every morning and evening when people are using their devices. Finally, the RV park we're staying at only has WiFi at the office and the Mofi was unable to boost this. Bottom line, this $350 device cannot improve an overloaded cell tower which is a common occurrence in rural US and provides no better service than a plain old JetPack.
@WeCanExploreIt
@WeCanExploreIt 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Lyle, Have you tried switching bands? With the standard JetPacks, they lock you on to Band 13, which is where EVERYONE is when they use the Jetpack. With the MOFI, you can select a different band if one's available. When I am in a congested area, I will look for Band 4 and usually can get more speed from that band. You're right, your location will determine what kind of bandwidth that you get, but you can make sure you get the best signal to it to get the most you can. Any questions feel free to hit me up. Later!
