I didn't think the video could be any more depressing but man, you made it even more sad, i love how honest you are though, it's refreshing to see a youtuber wear his heart on his sleeve and not just put on an act, that's what makes you so likeable.

Sorry, but this is one of the very few covers that destroys and surpasses the original. I've heard NIN sing it but Johnny Cash makes it so emotioinal. This was the perfect song for Cash to leave us with. It's as powerful as David Bowie's final goodbye with Lazarus. Thank you for the video I enjoyed it immensely. You got a new subscriber !

Reznor said when he saw the video he knew it was no longer his song. I agree. Also the way Johnny sings this hits you right in the emotions. I think many of us have cried while listening or watching the video. Powerful stuff by the man in black.
@nathanpapp432
@nathanpapp432 6 жыл бұрын
Thats debatable, the original is much more musically complex. Cash dumbs it down a bit by removing some of the dissonance which really makes the song what it is. The instrumentation is also much more sparse in the Cash version. The way Johnny sings it is great though, ill give him that, but musically the NIN version is much better.

Although all due respect to NIN cause Trent wrote it and that's where most of the power comes from is those lyrics BUT I think Johnny made it his own and I think they're both equally as good just for different reasons. Doesn't happen often that a cover even comes close to the original let alone the ability to surpass it. A few off the top of my head is "Hurt" of course another would be "The Man Who Sold the World" covered by Nirvana, original artist- David Bowie and the cover to end all covers "I Will Always Love You" covered by Whitney Houston, original artist-Dolly Parton. I know I'm missing a bunch please add to my list!
@angramainyu267
@angramainyu267 7 жыл бұрын
IMO this was A LOT more emotional than the original... It's simply viewing it at the perspective of an old man who is reflecting on his life... Even the composer of this song admitted that when he listened to JC's version of his song he immediately realized that he lost and accepted that the song is not his anymore... He compared it to losing a girlfriend to someone else....
@williamroeben
@williamroeben 7 жыл бұрын
I agree- he figuratively knocked it out of the ballpark. There was so much loss in JC's life- as there is in ANYONE'S life- and it natural to mourn and grieve.

I’m finally at a place where I’m getting help and it feels amazing. But I think I was meant to find your video, this song. This channel. Holy shit. It’s one thing to watch some 30 something reactor listen to the lyrics and watch the scenes. The most that we get is a misty eye and a mild feeling of sadness. It was so tough watching this, seeing someone who is well aware of Cash in his prime and the legacy he left before his life spiraled. For you it’s probably comparable to seeing a reflection of Freddie Mercury if he were in Cash’s shoes. In the latter half of the song, I could also feel the hundred images flashing through your mind, though I’m less than half your age. Thank you, Mr. Nearly

I've been watching quite a few of these "Hurt" reactions and they are so very similar in their effect on the listener. This song forces the listener to think about things they usually are trying NOT to think about because it's driving the deep questions right into the heart of those hearing it. Meaning "Why are we here?" "Where am I going?" "How should I be living?" "What have I been living for and how?" "What is really Important in life?". Then when they are done it's so often silence and difficulty describing what they are thinking or feeling. "Hurt" is an "Anointed" song and Johnny's video especially.

I truly appreciate your reaction to this, as it mirrors my own reaction to this song EVERY time i watch the video or listen to it. It is the "everyone I know goes away in the end, and you could have it all, my empire of dirt" line that really gets me.

I remember the first time I heard this song. It spoke to me because I was going through a difficult time and to this day, when I’m at my lowest or even my highest (emotionally speaking) this song makes me either want to or actually cry. It’s an amazing song and I’m glad that you sir have a very deep emotional connection to this song. Thank you for what you do and keep up the great content! 🤟

I’m a Nine Inch Nails fan and love the original, but I adore the Johnny Cash version even more. It just seems so much longer r e raw and honest, especially given the life that Johnny Cash lived. It’s like Trent Reznor wrote it about him in the first place.

This song embodied all of his regrets. Became the outlet for him to unburden himself before he leave. I'm sure Mr. Cash have no regrets now. In heaven, with his wife.

Every time I listen to this song with my full attention I want to cry. I definitely have before, but sometimes its hard to let it happen. Thanks for this video NSC, it made me cry to see your connection with the lyrics. I can only imagine how much more intensely I will feel this song when I'm older and have lived through that much more pain...

ok this man gets it ........i have seen alot of these reviews on this song ...he actually cries ...so he gets it .....i can not watch this video without crying every time .....its that deep and this man and i can relate to it very much ....the regrets of life and in the end it all means nothing ...and if he could do it all again ...a million miles away ...he would keep himself .. he would find away ....and the way his wife looks at him ..the hurt the saddness she felt ..as she was watching him destroy his self ..she stuck by his side till the end ...
