CARLSBAD CAVERNS NATIONAL PARK IS 2.5 MILES OF MAGICAL TRAILS 750 FEET UNDER THE SURFACE! The most impressive way to enter the cave is to walk down the perfectly paved, steep, switch backing pathway. This is called the natural entrance, and allows you to slowly immerse yourself in the beauty of the cavern over the 1.25 mile walking trail path into it. If this sounds too strenuous, there is an elevator that will take your group down 750 feet down (10 stores) directly to the floor of the main cavern area. This area has two paths. The main path is a 1.25 mile loop, with a "short cut" to decrease the loop length trip to 5/8th of a mile if you prefer.
Sue is 63 and I am 68, and it was very doable. Make CERTAIN you wear grippy, heavy duty shoes or hiking boots that will allow your ankles and front of your foot to "lean into" the front shoe laces for 1.25 miles trekking in. If you wear flimsy shoes or flip flops, you will be sorry!

You should add it to a book divided by states that I suggest you keep! That has worked out well for us. When someone goes somewhere cool, we just add it to the corresponding page in our travel book. We will be in Montana this summer, and when we looked at that state in the book we keep it had TWO things to see that we had forgotten about!

You can do it! Just do your homework and pick the right equipment to travel in that you can easily afford. And remember, no matter what you buy, it will fall apart. You need a reserve fund for repairs along the way for as long as you own it.

We were there last month and I agree it should be on everyone's bucket list. One of the most fascinating, beautiful places we've every seen and experienced. You did a great job with your video but I've yet to see any pictures or video's that does the cave justice. So glad we didn't take the elevator down we would have missed so much. We were there the same time of year in 2019. It was the 2nd time for me but the 1st time for the wife. Great experience. We got there just in time for the last group being able to go down and then stayed for the bat exit. They make you shut off ALL electronic devices, including cameras. It's past sunset before they come out so you wouldn't be able to capture any good photos anyway. They make you be REAL quiet and sit still during the entire exit. They have it illuminated real well inside so you really don't need any extra lighting and in fact you'll get your best photos/videos without additional lighting. It's amazing how much your eyes get acclimated to the darkness. When we were on the way out the ranger was turning the lights off behind us and then you can't even see your hand in front of your face :-) Enjoyed the video. Brings back some nice memories.

@@OurJourneyInMyles Actually that late in the year you didn't miss much. There are a few left but most have gone south into Mexico by then. I hear you really need to be there in July or Aug to really see a lot of them. It's interesting that no one group of them reside there. It's more of a stopping off place as different groups transit through.

We RV about the same time October 23rd for us . We took our 5 year old Granddaughter , she had a wonderful time in the cavern. We could hardly keep up with her. We were definitely tired...but not as bad off as I thought we were going to be on the way up. We bike a lot, so that helped. But 25 miles in Florida (home base) is very different than 7 miles at elevation up a small mountain in New Mexico. It was by far the hardest bike ride I've taken in years. The ride down was a blast! It took us an hour to go up and then 20 minutes to go down hehe. As for amazing shape, Mark is too kind. We are in decent shape. Haha.

The cave is GIANT and has an extremely open air feeling. ZERO claustrophobia. The three elevators are quite large, and could hold about 20 folks (Pre-covid) The deer's ears look like rabbit ears!
