Yes, bark scrapped off a tree is usually, deer, elk, or moose. From what I saw in your vid that’s what it looked like. If it was a bear there would be claw marks and those are kind of unmistakeable. Also, look for long hairs imbedded in the bark that’s remaining on the tree. If those hairs are black, it’s probably a black bear (since you are in CO). However, if you were in WY or MT and the hairs were brown, be very careful because that might be grizzly, depending where you are in those states. And remember just because a 4legged animal used the tree to scrap their antlers does not mean a bear won’t use the same tree to scratch his back. Hope that helps. All bears like to use trees to scratch their backs on and when they do they leave hairs. The 4 legged animals usually don’t use trees the same way.

Not bears. Primarily elk, but deer and moose also, will strip bark for food in the winter. They'll also use trees to rub on to get the velvet off their antlers, which can cause those sorts of marks too. You're safe!

For future visits to Leadville, there are better places to pay for a shower while you boondock there. There are endless boondocking sites in the area. Most “lakes” in Colorado are manmade reservoirs to supply drinking water to distant cities and don’t allow people to enter the water, although boating may be permitted, so check before you plan a trip to a “lake” with plans to jump in! Also, most lakes are very cold.

Your last couple of videos have made me really homesick. I grew up in Denver and used to go to the mountains all the time. I went to school in Gunnison, which is just on the other side of the mountains from Salida (near Blue Mesa, actually, which I saw somebody comment about). A few years ago, I moved away because the cost of living had gotten ridiculous. While you're in Colorado, make sure you stop at one or more hot springs. My personal favorite is Hot Sulphur Springs, because instead of one giant pool, they have more than a dozen little ones of all different temperatures. You get to hop around like Goldilocks, finding the one that's perfect for you.

Regarding your water filter, it's a good idea when hooked up to a water source for a period of time, couple of days to weeks, is to attach the filter to the RV side rather than the tap side. This will reduce any sitting water that is in the hose, that was in sun, to be forced through the filter into the RV.

Aloha Kevin! I very much enjoyed part 2 of your Colorado adventure. Leadville is a cool place; lots of interesting mining history there. You visited at a good time of the year. I've been there where 4 feet of snow covers everything! The scenery around Twin Lakes is awesome. As for jumping into a mountain lake, they are where you find them, but you can expect at that altitude either cold or icy water. You'll freeze your okole off! Speaking of water activities, next time take a rafting trip down the Arkansas River from Buena Vista to Salida and onward thru the Royal Gorge to Canyon City. Bill

The personal size berky is awesome, well I never heard of it until this video and well I have the life straw. Yes sir it is evidence of bear, I used to work in Yellowstone National Park where all employees get bear safety training and that tree stripping and scratches is one of the signs that bear have been there. Kevin it looks like the bear was there recently so keep your head on a swivel and make noise when you head down a trail, bears will avoid you if they can. Beautiful area! The RV park I am at requires additional money for a shower but the campground in Sula Montana which I highly recommend for a pit stop for ice cream or a burger has showers included in your overnight cost. Sula is the first stop in Montana after leaving Idaho and it is on highway 93. I am partial to Sula since that is my home base.

Great video as always! Beautiful countryside even without the jump-in lake. Thanks for taking us along on the journey. I think the RV accessory you really need is a robot drone video camera that you can put on the ground, have it video you driving away, then you press a button and it automatically flies back to your van, so you don’t have to stop, shift into reverse, drive back to your camera, get out, pack it up, drive away again for real, and then edit all that out of your video... because that must get old really fast. 😁

I've personally always wanted to jump into Heart's Lake, which is up on the Continental Divide a bit east of Winter Park, which is a ways to the North from where you were staying in this video. Even better, is if you climb the boulder wash which feeds Heart's Lake, you find a bunch of unnamed 'hanging lakes' above timberline, and those little lakes/ponds are isolated enough that I've never even seen evidence of human activity around them. You do have to walk about a mile to get to Heart's from where you can park on the road, and climb up almost vertically a half mile to get to the hanging lakes, so if you don't want to put in that much effort, it might not be the place for you. Still, you're already in one of my favorite places in that area already. I adore the drive from Twin Lakes to Leadville, and I am glad you got to experience it.

Once again enjoying your videos so much. As a "newbie" RV'er myself, it's great to hear about your what went right and what went wrong. Your humbleness and willingness to talk about mistakes and your solutions is refreshing! Watching some of the RV life channels you'd think nothing ever went wrong :) I also like that you don't gloss over what seem like small details, because, again, as someone who is new at this, the small details are often what separates a good trip from a bad one. In this video your tips about water storage and filtering were great, and I'm going to pick up a few of the things you mention. The water jugs I have are terrible, and make the water taste funny, looks like yours a vast improvement. I did have a quick question, do you use a dash cam or do you get your dashboard footage from your Sony camera mounted somehow? Just curious, since you don't list it in your gear. Anyway, have fun, stay safe and looking forward to the next installment!

Thats awesome that you said your heading to a bike shop, what did you get (I'm sure I'll see it in a future video) I was actually writing this while watching and was going to tell you to put that bike rack to use! I'm retired military also (Army) working for the Airforce now, so not completely retired yet, but we bought a Coachman Beyond Li3 and are working towards a goal like yours, but just camping on weekends for the most part for now to get our feet wet. Super cool that you just went full bore the way you did, but nothuge change from your international travels...just doing it stae side with a vehicle instead. Anyway enjoy and I'll keep watching.

Buena Vista and Salida are our go to mtn spots due to a short distance away. There's closer mtn towns to Pueblo, but they don't have the amenities, that are found in Salida and Buena Vista. Funny enough the day you started from Missouri my wife and I were returning from a trip to TN and hit KS, MS along the same route. We even stopped in Hays, KS.

Just found your channel. Best thing to do is get a big road atlas of whatever state you're in, and get a little familiarity with where there's BLM land, nation forests, state parks, and so on. Yes, it's all online, but I'm an old-school nerd. The Motor Vehicle Use Maps for national forests will show roads where dispersed camping is allowed. If I've ever had a question, a phone call to the ranger station is all it takes. I'd love to know where that spot by the creek is located!

Really practical information about the water and filter. A re-cap of your good (and not so good moments) of your journeys is interesting and helpful too. When I live in a van or small rv, I will do a lot of stealth camping/parking because I will still need to work, but for my getaways this is useful information. I will be residing in the Pacific NW and I know they have lots of camp areas. Yes, we Mothers always worry if our children are eating right, even when they are grown(so that made me chuckle). Thankfully, I never was overprotective as Mom though.

@@30AndAWakeUp If you want to swim (or probably wade in later summer) in cool, clean, Rocky Mountain streams, you will have to drive into the mountains, in fact, smaller places, VERY OFF-ROAD, are necessary anymore in places such as the "creeks" outside the reservoirs in the Rio Grande Forest outside of Pagosa Springs. I've done some photoshoots there in the last 10 years that had absolutely crystal clear Rocky Mountain rivers/streams! The other locations are always very deep into the mountains and away from civilization except for small mountain towns. Also, there are some really cool old mountain towns still around that have people living in them even (or summer cabins at least) like Como Colorado, on the other side of the mountains from Breckenridge (which there are logging roads you can take your chance and travel on between Como and Breck, but if you get stuck with a truck in front of you, that's a LONG WAY to have to reverse! But I've driven them in smaller SUV's and if you can, they have AMAZING VIEWS! Your RV might be too big though). Let me know when you are headed to the PNW!

Hard to tell from my phone, but looks more like an antler scratches. The skinnier trees work great for itchy horns. Lol. Bear aware is more about you not startling them. This time of year they are all about the berries. Dont camp in a patch. The creek might bring some bears too. Sing or talk to yourself when coming out of the van to let them know your around.

One app I have been using for search and rescue and camping is the OnX Hunt app. It tells you if you are on BLM land, Forest Service, or private property and if you are on private land, it tells you their name of the owners. It does cost per state though. There are also a few other boondocking websites out there as well, but they are not always up to date and they only hit the popular areas, and not so much on the hidden gems.

Very nice video, like all ways. 120 years ago the government of Sweden made a law saying that everyone could go any where outside the cities to pick berries, mushrooms, etc. and to raise a tent and so on,without asking for permission from the landowner, but you should use some common sense and close gates if there is some animals and so one. So it’s quite nice in that way here in Sweden :) :) :)

30 And A Wake Up I’m a fan of carrying bear spray on me. I know it’s a debatable topic for sure. When I met a born and raised Jackson City, Wyoming resident this past fall (near The Grand Tetons) and learned she carried not only one can but 2 even when working around her homestead... I no longer felt sorta embarrassed about my husband and I each carrying a can when hiking in bear territory- and being educated on how to use it. And she said black bear can be just as unpredictable as grizzly. I didn’t ask for her stories and she didn’t volunteer as a child was with her. Sure enjoying your vids!
