4500 has 1” of rubber feet that you can remove. If I was in your position I’d make the generator bay on slides where it slides out to refuel and access. The old generator, the battery might’ve bit the dust due to wire short. I’ve had to get help from champion before, they were very helpful and sent carburetor free of charge

I carry an Energizer 2200 watt generator. Great for recharging my batteries. Run it for about 5 hours and I'm good for about 5 days of running my refrigerator and freezer.

PS My experience in fixing/salvaging used equipment is this: If it has 20% life left in it (which we can't foresee) I'll end up somehow wasting that life (I can't count the number of times I've heard professionals say, 'Gee, I never saw that happen before.') Hi Dave, two suggestions... 1) pickup a windshield repair kit at AutoZone or Napa. If you drill & inject the glue into a fresh stone chip, it'll keep the crack from traveling. 2) Before electrically & physically integrating the new generator make sure it will support multiple cycles of the A/C. Without adding a soft-start, I'd be surprised if the 2400 will supply enough current for a restart. It'll most likely, easily start the A/C after it's been off for several hours, however a restart within a few minutes will most likely cause the generator to trip out on high load / current. The differential refrigerant pressure in the A/C system Is relatively low on initial start. After a stop and without waiting for the pressure difference to drop, the compressor motor will require a lot more current to restart. At a minimum, a soft-start (eg. Micro-Air) sequences the loads (fan, compressor) and delays the restart to allow the pressures to equalize & thus significantly reduce the load / required current. In my '80s 5th wheel, I installed Micro-Air Soft Start & I'm able to run my roof A/C, with restarts, off with my Honda EU2000i. I think my A/C unit is 13000btu. FYI, I receive no advantage from Micro-Air. Actually, while a soft-start is a lot easier on the A/C unit, it is expensive, so I suggest you just make sure to get a generator large enough to run the A/C as is. BTW#1, regarding the failure.. When you demonstrated trying to start the generator, it did sound like the alternator rotor was scrubbing against the stator. At minimum the alternator end bearing is shot.. While repair might be possible, if the rotor was allowed to run for too long while scrubbing the stator or the stator & or rotor are too damaged, it may be well beyond repair. BTW#2, a simple test for continuity between the shore line feed wires on the transfer switch would indeed probably look like a "short", even on a new unit. That's because there's most likely an across-the-line coil that operates the relay when power is applied via the power cord. A simple continuity test would only demonstrate whether or not there's a low or high DC resistance path between the wires. But with AC voltage applied to a coil, current is limited by the coil's Impedance. Impedance is the trigonometric product of DC resistance AND Inductive Reactance. A coil's AC opposition to current flow is typically, primarily, the result of Inductive Reactance. Perhaps there's another problem with the transfer switch, in any case, I'm just a tad suspicious of the information you were given. Anyhow, if you're still reading, I hope you get through the mess sooner than later.. Best regards, Dennis

I got a dc-dc adapter to get power from my alternator in a pinch. On my last outing, the Generator fuel pump went bad during a cloudy spell so no solar! Luckily a neighbor loaned me their Honda and got me charged up.

What about modifying the tray that the generator sits on to a sliding tray so you can pull it out far enough to refill it. Doesn't solve the remote start problem though.

Have you looked at the Cummins P4500i It shows a assembled height of 20" but it may fit if you left the wheels and feet off. I would look for a Inverter generators they extremely fuel-efficient and much quieter than conventional.

Yay! Ya made it! The Champ gave out? Bummer. I don't trust those switches. I have heard too many stories of them going bad and doing what it did to yours. I have Romex coming from my inverter to a box on the tongue, that I can plug my shore power line into, so the shore power is either plugged in, connected to the gen or the inverter. Absolutely no way to fry anything at all. It's just manual. Camping World does sell them, that is where I got my 2500 from, but only because they gave me a deal, they are really proud of their stuff.

Does your alternator charge both vehicle and house batteries or just the vehicle? In a pinch, running your engine as a generator is a possible solution. Second, a set of portable panels that you can set on the ground and move throughout the day would get you some more power. Third option would be some type of small windmill to provide power to your house batteries. Quartzite would seem to be windy enough night or day to put some power in your house batteries. I'm currently in San Antonio, coming from Baltimore, slowly making my way to the RTR. Safe travels to you and Bella.

I believe Lowe's carries the Champion 3100 but i don't know if it has the remote start feature. If ya put the 2500 in there, remember they have the transfer pumps you hook to a cordless drill with some clear tubing cut to length as needed.

From my point of view. Turn the old generator 90*. Then slide the new one in next to it. The floor there has an angle-iron frame and it should tilt the new one enough to fuel it too. Of course I'm on YT and the quality of image may be miscued a bit.

I was looking at the new generator and wondering if a tube could be run into the top but then I saw what looked like a primer button. ?? Hope you do find the gen you want .
