I have a converted Penske box truck camper and the builder made the bed a standard double size, since I have a 24" kitchenette, shower and toilet stall on the other side. But he made it fold up to the wall on hinges like a Murphy bed to get it out of the way when I want to use the truck, which opens in the back like yours, to haul large cargo. He had welded a steel frame with legs and screwed plywood to it. The mattress stays on it when it folds up and latches to a heavy duty eyebolt in the side wall with a short piece of chain and large spring clip. I plan to replace it with an even more flexible system. You can get those black mesh folding metal bed frames on line or through Walmart for under $100. The full size and queen size come in two halves, which fold in half themselves and the legs fold flat as well. Opened out, the two halves can be used separately as twin beds or connect together for a double or queen. I have a set of the queen size so each is 30" wide by 36" tall and about 4" thick when folded. I carry one now behind the passenger seat in the truck cab to set up as a second bed when traveling with 3 of us, using the cushions on the built in loveseat as a mattress for the twin sized cot. When I remove the heavy welded Murphy bed, I will replace it with the two metal frames and cut a double sized foam mattress in half and sew a cover that will allow the two halves to be joined together with velcro strips underneath. That way I can leave one frame set up and have the mattress folded in half on it to use as a single bed or a daytime couch (with some throw pillows). When I want to set it up as a double bed, I just need to unfold the second frame, clip the two frames together and then unfold the mattress. This arrangement also will allow me to more easily remove the bed frames and mattresses entirely from the truck when I want to use it to haul between camping trips. Also I will be able to set up a double bed or two twins in my camp tent if I choose to bring that along on a trip. And the set up is much lighter than the current welded steel frame or one made of 2 by 4's like yours. I don't like having the bulky plywood platform (hard to stash out of the way when traveling), and you really don't need that heavy of a support for supporting a mattress even for large adults. Most Europeans have slept for centuries (as did Americans until 80 years ago) with mattresses with or without box springs on either flat spring frames or a set of 8 to 10 wooden slats about 1" x 3" fastened together with canvas straps. IKEA still sells these as bed frame supports. They can be removed from the L shaped frame and rolled up out of the way. I like versatility in the layout of my camper. The round dinette table top and its pedestal pop off and can be stashed in the cab when I need space for the third sleeping cot. And instead of the bulky bench seats that came in the camper I replaced them with two commercial metal and plastic ergonomic stack chairs which can be stacked together out of the way or even used outside at camp (bonus was I got them for $5 each at an architectural recycling warehouse).

was there ever a consideration to install a happijac bed lift similar to what they have in toy haulers?

Yes and I’m actually still considering it. Cost kept me from doing it to start but I may transition to that eventually. Since my trailer is not extra tall, I don’t know how much I’d really gain though.
