I wish I had seen this 2 years ago. This was a constant problem with my trailer. The dealer only wanted to replace the pump. That never solved the problem. There was all sorts of theory on the internet but no one figured it out like you did. Great job. Every trailer with a Shurflo pump should have this mod.

What a great and thorough video! This video needs to be placed on every RV forum out there. Now I know exactly how to cut and crimp Pex tubing!! Have you ever thought of removing and bypassing your water filter canister? I have the same set up and changing the filter is such a pain in the ass. My trailer is only a year old but I have read horror stories about them leaking and cracking over the years

Thanks Rob, I try my best to explain how I do things so people that would never think of tackling something might do it after seeing my video. I've placed the video on quite a few forums out there and if you no of more feel free to share it with other sites. We've had the trailer almost 5 years and haven't had any problems with the onboard filter, it may be a little pain to get to but we only have to change once per year. I use both the Camco "Blue" filter outside and the inside filter. I'm not sure if you have watched my video showing how dirty the on board filter gets even while using the "Blue" filter outside. Check out this video to see - kzbin.info/www/bejne/r16VpnZmd5Jrf6s I've heard the same story from a few people on FB groups talking about removing the onboard filter because they have heard they can break or leak (Tip: when you go to replace the filter put this silicone grease on the "O" rings to help them seal better, it works great - amzn.to/3vqUSJ3 ), I think its one of those things out there where a few people say take it out and everyone panics and take them out. I used to work at company's that have different locations with different weather and there was never a problem and they had around 400 filter set ups similar to the one we have. I would say just make sure when you winterize you remove the filter and have anti freeze in it or no water and you will be okay. I hope I've been of some help to you, thanks for watching

I changed my cabinet door to a latch system, instead of removing screws, so I can access it easily. Then I installed the ball valve before the pump instead of another check valve. When dry camping or in need of 12v water pump, I just open the ball valve to allow my tank water into the coach. Turn off to keep the city line from running back into tank, job done.

A side note about using Pex crimp clamps on flexible tubing. It is NOT to code and at some point those fittings will leak. I always use heavy duty hose clamps on flexible tubing. BTW, I am a RV tech.
@thetraveltrailerguy
@thetraveltrailerguy 7 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for bringing this up, you are right. I appreciate you pointing this out. I'm curious why the Pex crimp clamps would cause a leak on flexible tubing when they clamp much harder than a heavy duty hose clamp that does not clamp down as hard as the Pex clamp?

Good video. I would add this. All that white flexible tubing isn't PEX. Those crimp connectors start failing at around 5 years because the hose wall compresses under the crimp. I replaced the crimps with hose clamps which worked, as a patch. but that only works if your going over a pre crimped area. Hose clamp won't work on new hose, or if you cut back and reconnect. ID is to big and the hose clamp isn't strong enough to make it water tight. The real solution is rep,ace that flex hose with real PEX.

@@thetraveltrailerguy I had the same problem with my pump on Christmas eve. I ran to the hardware store and bought a ball valve and 1/2 barbed hose connectors and clamps, do to the location of my pump I opted to put the valve on the suction side. I also have a 3-way valve for winterizing on the suction side. After putting in the valve I had every factory cinch clamp leak on the 3 way valve. I removed the 3-way valve and hooked the ball valve directly to the strainer. I figured it was fixed and since we are connected to water the pump was not needed I opted to wait for spring to replace my pump. Well after 2 Months with no leaks I walked into the kitchen only to find water on the floor, after investigating the pump itself was leaking water out the pressure switch. So I put a ball valve on the pressure side to isolate the pump. My rig uses mainly Flair-It fittings except for the lines to the water pump. After researching I found 1/2 PEX is .48" ID and uses a 1/2" PEX clamps. The flex reinforced hose .50" ID and 5/8" OD I was told uses 5/8" PEX clamp on a barbed 1/2" fitting not PEX 1/2 fittings (I believe so they don't over clamp the tubing) I opted for worm type clamps and they seem to be holding fine .I did run into these for Flair-It fittings which I ordering to see how they work. www.recpro.com/flair-it-flex-hose-insert-and-nut-for-1-2-compression-hose/ FYI my pump was leaking from fine cracks were the screws tread in for the pressure switch.

@@thetraveltrailerguy I also wanted to to know your video and explanations was excellent and I really enjoyed it. I wish I would have watched your first video on how to reseat the check valve when I had my problem. One other bit of information I learned was to exercise your pump, meaning use your pump. I"m hooked to city water all the time and only use my pump when the weather freezes so I unhook my hose to prevent it freezing and use my pump for a few days out of of the year. As for your pump noise I was told to put a large loops in the lines going to your pump (suction and pressure). then I found this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWbEn6aKm9mEhNk haven't tried it but could be s cheep fix. Why did you not connect the check valve directly to the hose using the sharp bite without adding the other tubes?
@thetraveltrailerguy
@thetraveltrailerguy 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Gary, great question. I installed the check valve to the PEX tubing rather than the hose because the fitting is designed to connect to ridged tubing and more than likely would have not worked because of tubing size or got a good seal with flexible tubing. I didn't want to take any chances with having any water leaks someday. I hope this helps :) Thanks again - kzbin.infovideos

@@thetraveltrailerguy yes that's the pump I bought several months ago for around 45 48 ish at the time I still have the old surflow 4008 only issue I had with it was the bypass setting so I got a 2 gal accumulator tank to smooth out the water flow at the sink but I got the seaflow and I can run the water for about 90 seconds before the pump kicks in and refills the system

Is there a valve in the tank fill before it gets to the tank??

Hello Rose, thanks for watching and your question. There is no shut off/on valve between the fresh water fill inlet and the fresh water tank. I'm really curious to know if you had leaks later where you connected your hose onto a pex fitting instead of a barb fitting.

Great question. So its been a year and there has been no water leaks at any of the connections and in the last year and we have dry camped 80 nights during this time using the water pump. Note: the pump only puts out around 45 psi and when we are connected to city water I have a water pressure regulator set at 45 psi. Parts I used for this project are listed below: At around 6 months ago I did have to replace the water pump because of a leak at the pump itself but not at any fittings, here's that video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJC6oWmLeLN6qMk I hope this information is helpful - www.youtube.com/@thetraveltrailerguy/videos Parts Used amazon affiliate links - SharkBite U2008-0000LFA 1/2 inch x 1/2 inch Brass Check Valve, Push-to-Connect, Copper, PEX, CPVC - amzn.to/3jFxhBc SharkBite U702A Deburring Pipe and Depth Gauge Tool, Copper, CPVC, PEX, PE-RT, HDPE, 1/4 Inch-1 Inch Sizes - amzn.to/3dFBWz7 IWISS PEX Cinch Clamp Crimping Tool for Stainless Steel Clamps from 3/8-inch to 1-inch with Calibration Gauge 20pcs 1/2-inch and 10 pcs 3/4-inch Clamps Suit ASTM F2098 Standards - amzn.to/3huxR2h 1/2" BALL VALVE WITH DROP EAR - amzn.to/3qKnmf5 1/2 in. @thetraveltrailerguy , that's excellent! I'm converting a box truck to an RV, and the water and propane are my last major parts. I hunted all over and couldn't find a video that made sense on where to put the one- way valve until yours! If I need any of the parts, I'll make sure to use your links. @@BTNomad Your welcome, sounds like you have a fun project. Here's a idea you might want to think about doing.......If you have a exterior propane grill, firepit, or BBQ you might want to plumb off your propane tanks with a quick connect hose and fitting so you can use propane off your existing tanks instead of carrying around a separate tank for them. Just a thought. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZyZdHyvYq6bmKs

@thetraveltrailerguy , I may end up doing something like that. Not for a grill, but in case I end up spending another winter in Iowa, it'll be easier to have an external propane outlet (extended stay). I will use my diesel heater also, which I am soooo impressed with it. For now, I just need to finish the water system and the basic propane for my stove and on-demand water heater. 😊

So I've got my check valve installed. There are no issues there, but what I do see happening is that the water from the pump is being pushed up the city water line (where it is leaking). I'm going to put another check valve in that line to stop that from happening, but I've not heard one person talk about this issue. Everyone tells about the backflow into the tank on city water, but not the other way around. 🤨🤨🤨 Have you guys heard of this issue? It makes perfect sense that it would do that since the city water line is the next avenue for water movement after the check valve, it's just weird that folks aren't talking about it. Of course, most folks aren't building a system from scratch, so whatever fixes there are, someone else put them in place.

My preference would have been to have the installed valve ABOVE the frame rather than below, and add new connection from the valves input to the tank.

I was thinking the same thing when I was deciding where to put the shut off valve, I wanted to put it where it was the easiest to turn on and off so this is why I put it there. But I agree you have a good idea. I'm not sure what you are saying about "add new connection from the valves input to the tank." can you explain? Thanks Mike
@Tom-Fisherman
@Tom-Fisherman 3 жыл бұрын
@@thetraveltrailerguy Chances are the connection from that valve back to the tank MIGHT be too small now, (if you decided to move it up there). So, I would add a new extra long hose piece to the the valve is in your hand then mount the valve..THEN connect to tank. Any other way, might be a pita. I installed on boats for a living and find easier ways to do things...
