When drains go the opposite direction, you know something is wrong. In the area that I live, I have dealt with many floods. And one time, I took a walk in rubber boots, and I literally watched a 1 foot guizer of water coming out of thee storm drain. The storm drains around here are not designed for the amount of flooding that we get. And 2-years ago, we got a flood so bad, it came inn the garage and ruined a lot of stuff. And the water level was up to the house, but a miracle, stayed bellow the floor line, so water did not come in the house thankfully. I hate floods, and backed up drains that don't do shit.

You can install a backflow valve to prevent the water from backing up

Some city utilities won't allow it. We have to call 1st to make sure..

@Rvdaydream yep, definitely check but I'm sure they will be fine with it. Here in Canada, we save on home insurance if we have one of those installed. Cost about $900 to hire a plumber.

It seems that it's common for aging drainage and sewage systems to backup during heavy rainfall, particularly if there is any debris in the lines or it's just plain undersized.

Unfortunately this was caused by a blockage that was a block or so away from us in the main city sewer line.

@@Rvdaydream I guess you can say that the gaps in storm drains let all kinds of small things in, which caused the blockage, most likely. I guess you are lucky to have one of the few older neighborhoods with separate stormwater sewers, as you often need a biohazard cleaning of flooded basements when you mix in human waste.

I would suggest that you disconnect those drains at the curb, seal them curb to basement, and then determine where and how many sump pits and pumps to install. Im very aware of oddities in Ohio, but if those are public storm sewer drains, investigate your rights here as you may have legal case for failure to maintain. Damages, mold, health, are all real dollar concerns. May even be a situation where your homeowners covers you and they go after the utility. Anyway, this is a big reason you won't find drains like those in new construction.

The drains for the foundation also go to the floor drains which all then go to the main city sewer drain through a pipe that runs through the backyard. I have been told that the city does not allow Foundation water to be pumped above ground nor to the road. Even the downspouts are not allowed to have a path to the road. We were immediately instructed by the city sewer department to contact their office to obtain the documents needed to fill out and submit to the city law office director for damage reparations.

@Rvdaydream love the oddities of Ohio... Mandate but not maintain. Get an independent inspection with samples taken for air quality, swabs of contaminates, and mold, and be prepared for a battle with them. The independent, licensed inspector will provide horsepower against the steamroller. You may also need a lawyer to send a friendly message to the city because this IS NOT under the clause of Acts of God. This is an engineered system, and they are regulating and mandating without alternative for homeowners.
