The max watts on your generator is 2200 at 18.3 amps. That's it's peak ability for momentary demand for start ups. The rated watts for your 2,200 is 1,800 watts & 15 amps rated. Sustained max operation of your 2,200 watt generator will shorten it's life. You also need to be aware of the AC compressor dipping below 110 volt operation. It's life will also be shortened as it's compressor struggles to cool your RV. You would be better off getting two 2,200 watt generators and running them parallel. Good luck :)

FYI. I bought the 2200i last week and did a LOT of research on break-in procedures, which ranged from “put in oil and run for 20 hours” to “put oil in spark plug hole. Put full synthetic and change after 15 minutes; repeat 10 times” It is quite the gamut of opinion, most not supported by anything more than hearsay and feelings. What I distilled from all of it and based on my own experience was the following procedure I followed. 1. Fill with oil (it takes 14 oz) and let run for 1 hour on eco with no load. 2. Change oil. I poured it into a Pyrex measuring cup so I could visually inspect it, and the oil was quite dark with lots of tiny “sparkles” suspended in the oil. Some were metal and some were aerated bubbles. 3. Refill with oil. I used the Honda oil 12oz container filled up to 1/4” of the top which I measured to be 14 ounces. 4. Run for second hour. Again with no load initially on Eco. I added a small fan about 20 minutes in and occasionally turned Eco off. 5. Drain oil after second hour into another Pyrex measuring cup. The oil this time was MUCH cleaner and a golden color. 6. I filled up with oil a third time and ran for another hour, this time adding a larger load and switching Eco on an off periodically. I used the original fan drawing 50watts and added a 1875 watt blow dryer that I cycled heat on/off. 7. After the third hour I turned the fuel off and let the carb run empty and put it away. I left the oil in and will change in 17 hours when the generator has 20 hours on it. To me this seems a reasonable balance between due diligence and OEM recommendations without getting OCD.

I bought a used motorhome that had the original onan 4000 generator removed. I bought the Honda 2200 companion and the standard Honda 2200. Running them in parallel gives me the power I need to run AC and everything else. If I don't need AC, I only use one generator. This gives me redundancy if one generator quits. I can also store both generators in the basement of my motorhome. The cost of both generators was $2100 but well worth the quality and reliability. I think you will very much enjoy your Honda.

We were tossing between the Champion and the Honda. We decided to buy 2 Hondas mainly for quite operation and quality. We got them "used" as a pair one still new with no oil in it and one hardly used for $1700 both. Size was also a factor as the Hondas fit in the trailer storage compartment. It's little more expensive than the Champion but we get Honda quality and more power if we need it. We were also fortunate to find a pair for sale "used" and according to the review video we should be happy campers..

Fun stuff! Thanks for sharing. ( beautiful ) Rig that size you should be able to find a spot for a gas can and a 2200i. I have to keep my 2000i, and gas can, in the back seat of my truck because there is no room in my Lance 835 for them and i never smell gas. Being a smoker, that's important ;)

I think the Easy Starts make all the difference in the world because you don't have that surge which sets the overload condition on the genny. Get rid of the surge and you could probable get away with using as small a genny as possible including the power you need to charge the batteries and run the frig... That would be great for boondocking or truck stops, easy to secure and better for your back...

Just my opinion. There’s no “break in” method found anywhere on Honda’s owners or service manual. I purchased a new 2200i from a Honda dealer. He also told me to run it. Honda perform a quality check at the factory. I took mine out of the box, checked the oil, added a theft bar and ran the hell out of it. It’s been stellar since zero hour.

Oh, thanks for mentioning this. I have the Honda eu2000i companion generator. Is the Champion 3500 dual fuel generator as quiet as the Honda eu2200i companion generator? I'm needing another generator because the tech guy at AirXcel says my Coleman Mach 3+ requires 3000 watts. It would be nice to also run the refrigerator off the electric too. I don't know whether to get another Honda eu2200ic and link them together having over 4000 watts available or give my one Honda eu2200ic to my brother and get this Champion 3500 dual fuel generator. The dual fuel ability is absolutely fantastic feature but realize using propane decreases the power output by 10% or more. It's not good for appliances to be underpowered. Thanks

@@ShowemRight thanks for feedback. Good to hear you're happy with the specs on the Champion dual fuel. I'm just wondering if the Champion is as solid and durable as the Honda. As always there are pros and cons to everything. Traveling with two smaller Hondas or one larger Champion, hmmmm. Two are always better than one. We all travel with a spare tire etc. But dual fuel is very tempting indeed. 😀🤔

Love your videos.... but.... I've been watching for several years, started when you were trying to explain/justify to everyone why they should buy used RV's to save money. Watched you pour time and money on a used RV replacing the roof and other things. I think you bought a used truck also, but not sure about that. Then I watched you buy a New truck and then explain/ justify why it was better to buy a new RV. Now I'm watching you do the same thing with generators.... I'm very happy for you and your wife, RV'ing and enjoying yourselves. I think it is Great. But think about the money you have lost by starting out "less expensive" (cheap) then eventually buying the better item, you would probably be $$$ ahead if you would have just saved up a few more weeks or months and bought the higher quality item to begin with. Some good old sayings to live by: "Buy cheap and buy twice", "Don't be afraid to buy the best- you will not be disappointed" and my favorite " The Quality remains long after the Price is forgotten!" Anyway, keep up the videos and especially keep on making memories with the wife....life is to short.

Other sayings that you need to keep in your wallet is, the best laid plans go to waste. And some of the best Journeys are unplanned. And finally keep your plans fluid. It's just what we decided to do. There is a whole flock of people that don't have the money for the new stuff and because we posted videos covering the old stuff being made durable and restored, they have been able to move forward with a plan in mind based on those older videos. I think a lot of it has to do with our Age too.... 15 years ago I would have never bought a new truck or trailer. I would not have minded climbing underneath the truck and changing a transmission on the roadside. Unfortunately I believe I'm past that time. I can still do it but only in a pinch.

When you are plugged into Shore power your converter does more than just charge the batteries, it will power up everything in the RV that runs off of 12 volts DC.
@Rvdaydream

Absolutely, but if you disconnect the battery no other draw will be applied to the generator other than the 12 volt fixtures or 110 appliances that are turned on.

Regular oil is fine, as long as you change it on time (maybe slightly early). The synthetic has superior antiwear and better thermal resistance properties. The biggest downside of synthetic is that causes the hardening of o-rings and seals(potentially cause leak). Also, it will cause crust coating inside of the engine after years of usage (caused by the deposit of the additives of synthetic). Nothing is absolutely perfect or good. Having said that, I do use synthetic oil for my vehicles and small engines. My 15-yrs old Honda had rear main seal leak, suspected due to the hardening of seals caused by synthetic.
@vizor4u
@vizor4u 2 жыл бұрын
The problem he is explaining is the friction modifiers in the high grade synthetic oils. You CAN'T break-in engine with those guys. You need low or no friction modifier oils. It's a long thread tho.

What you need is a dog bone that will convert your 30 amp cable to a 20 amp plug which gets powered by the generator.
@Rvdaydream
@Rvdaydream 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, Paul is correct , You can definitely run dog-bone adapters but you will never get 30 amps out of one of these EU2200. A lot of people get confused by that for some reason. So if you get a 15 amp to 30 amp dogbone, you can plug in your 30 amp RV cable but you're not going to get more than 15 amps out of it for and extended peroid of time.
@paulsylvester1394
@paulsylvester1394 3 жыл бұрын
You have to be aware of the numbers game. Your normal cable is rated for 30 amps. The dog bone in this case connects your 30 amp cable to a 20 amp plug. But that only means you can safely connect it to a 20 amp circuit if you had one. The generator says 2200.. but that is a peak load and gives you 18.3 amps. But it’s normal rating appears to be 15 amps continuous at 1800 watts, not 2200. You pay a ton for reliability, serviceability, and quiet! Your circumstances will likely dictate what you buy and you have already chosen Honda. I have one AC of 13,500 in my trailer and it runs fine on a 20 A circuit! Maybe not on a 15A generator. That Micro Aire Easy Start keeps looking better all the time! Good job on this video!

Generator is like a dirty word in "free camping" in Australia (boondocking to you)... Aussies go free camping to get away from it and when anyone starts up a generator it usually is very frowned upon..... The most used way to "power" your caravan or RV is with solar and batteries, aircon is a no no on solar tho, unless you have some serious solar..... Maybe we just like the heat more in Australia? lol. Of course Aussie camping and 4 wheel driving is way different to what you guys in the states do......

Should not use car oil in anything that doesn't have a oil pump and filter. Car oil has detergent which is also designed to keep particles suspended in the oil so the filter can grab it. Oils recommended for small engines don't have it so particles fall to the bottom. Small engines use splash to oil the parts so "good oil" may not be best. Find a non detergent oil if recommended.

The problem with non detergent oil is it's archaic. The amount of zinc and additives that are put in oil today is compatible with small engines as well as automobiles. That's why there's very few small engine oil specific manufacturers out there. Of course yamalube is one of the exceptions. Detergents are needed just as bad if not more in small engines as they are in large automobile engines. Filter or not detergents need to be able to do the job and keep the metal clean. Just because Small Engines don't necessarily have oil filters does it mean that they do not benefit from detergent style oils. Anything that is newer than 1990 benefits from regular Automotive style oil.

Two regular EU 2200 can hook together but their output would still be limited to the smaller household Outlet. Companion makes it possible to get 30 amps.

The only reason to get two Honda generators it's so that you can parallel them together and get 30 amps to run your 30 amp RV. Or to have 30 amps available an adapter connected to a 50 amp RV. You can run a lot of appliances inside your RV with 30 amps at the same time. With a regular household plug your Limited to the output of what that offers because of its limitation in wire gauge size. So even though you may have to Honda generators that have the ability to put out 30 amps you won't be able to exceed more than probably 15 to 20 amps at the most. And that 20 amps that it would provide would be a peak amperage not a running amperage meaning it could only handle 20 amps for just a short amount of time. I'm not sold on the Bluetooth one quite yet. Number one it always seems like these apps that work with devices that connect through Bluetooth sometimes have a problem connecting and it makes it frustrating. I have Bluetooth propane tank sensors, Bluetooth surge protector, and Bluetooth RV leveling indicator and all three of those have had problems connecting at some point. The other thing is do I really need a app to turn off my generator? I would love to have a remote that would turn on my generator which Champion does but I don't necessarily think I need to turn off my generator with an app. The other thing you've got to be conscious of is putting your generators into some sort of enclosure while they're running. What I mean by that is I have a generator box on the back of my RV so I can run the generator and keep it protected from the elements so I can run my appliances and not worry about the generator being stolen or rained on. If I was to have one of these newer Honda generators that they just came out with, they also have a built-in carbon monoxide detector that shuts them off if they sense too much carbon monoxide. As you can probably figure out if I had that in a box it might shut itself off automatically because the carbon monoxide might be a little bit hirelevel being in a vented box that might have some sort of exhaust reversion that causes that sensor to trip and shut the generator off when I don't want it to. Anyways those are my thoughts on it I might talk about it in a future video but just to let you know that's why I haven't gone that route yet. Plus I don't need to Honda generators as I installed the micro Air Easy start system on my air conditioner so I can run it off of just a single Honda 2200. These Honda generators are really nice though you will like them.👍

So I would absolutely disagree with you on using cheap oil for break in... what I would use is an off-road motorcycle oil because it has a higher zinc level in it and a higher zinc level is better for engines when you break them in but don't take my word for it I've only worked for an Oil company for the last 25 years... do you have a video of the micro Air Easy start being installed
@Rvdaydream
@Rvdaydream 5 жыл бұрын
I agree about any oil that has high zinc compounds in it for break in however, the chances of the General Public going to hunt down break in oil is slim to none for the most part. And since most of the generator manufacturers Just suggest 10 W 30 and don't specifically say synthetic or regular mineral-based oil people will most likely just buy what Walmart has to offer. So the main point that I want to get across is that when the basic shopper walks into Walmart to find their oil for their generator that they get the cheap stuff first. Because even though high zinc is the best break in oil it's not something you find on the Shelf at Walmart so when they're shopping I want them to put the stuff that is going to allow the engine to reach temperature. If not they'll be putting in synthetic from day one. As far as the microair easy starts oh, there are so many installation videos already I didn't even bother. It's a subject that has been rehashed over and over again as microair will give out their unit for free if you post an installation video that covers all the bases. So there's a lot of people that I've already done that. There's actually two really good videos that show the installation on two different type of rooftop AC units. I see your thumbnail of That 80's Ford Club Wagon. Make sure to check out our van dweller build video series in the playlist.

I’ve never understood why Rv’s need 13000 btu air conditioning. A 5000 btu air conditioning is all you need and any generator can handle that.
@Rvdaydream

I'm not sure where you live but 2 air conditioners on a RV may not be enough. We have a 15000 BTU rooftop air conditioner and a 13,500 BTU air conditioner and in the extreme heat both of them need to be running full blast keep the RV cool. and we have a very well insulated Harvey with thermal windows.

The only thing which has stopped me from getting that Champion model is the lack of a display. You have no idea how many amps/watts you are putting out, and that's annoying. It isn't that complicated of a display, and I guarantee the computer inside is already monitoring the data for overload purposes. The same display would have an hour meter and probably oil life as well.

AC manufacturers are all about the money, well as far as that goes so is the RV manufacturers. Just like saying why don't all cars come with turbochargers. They're more efficient all the way across the board. And as far as break in, the generator wasn't on full load. It was on Econo mode. It would cycle at all different RPMs as the air conditioner would start the compressor and then shut off the compressor as the temperature dictated inside.

@@Rvdaydream So when you first got your truck (new), you hitched up your trailer and towed 500-1000 miles to break in the engine?? Really?? Oh, it was ok, because you was towing through town, not highways speeds! And turbocharged are a breakdown looking for a place to happen!! You think the RV AC manufactures can't see the advantage and increased sales of an easy start AC units on RV's that can be run on a 2000i gen?? Something is missing here on someone's part and it ain't on my end!! Hope your AC survive the experiment!!
