Nice video Russ. My grandfather was a sound and lighting camera assistant for the filming of Stagecoach in 1939 in Monument Valley. He worked for Universal Studios in sound and lighting after that up until his death in 1954. Our family has many pictures and stories about those wild days.

My mother and I took our 3 man tent and stayed at Gouldings Good Sam campground back in the late 80s. We had THE most beautiful view of those mountains. The sunset was fantastic. It was just like the scene from John Fords westerns. Thanks for the memories.💖

Was on a trans-America motorcycle trip 35 years ago, but bypassed this area worrying about lack of petrol stations. Now I see yuck Donald's and roundabouts., and litter. I'd loved to seen it back when the westerns were being filmed. Sometimes the present isn't as good as the past. Glad for the ride-a-long. Still a beautiful area of this wonderful country. 👍👍🏍🏍🏍🙋♂️

I visited there last year and also took the 17mile road through the Valley of the Gods. AMAZING! It has lots of free camping. At the end is the Moki Dugway. A switchback road you will never forget driving up!

Memories, memories ... I must have visited Monument Valley 5 or 6 times over the years and it was always a "monumental" event. I slept in the campground a couple of times between 1980 and 1998. When I visited in 2013 after 15 years without going, the Navajos had built a new Hotel where the campground was. The Mittens are a marvelous sight at sunrise during the summer. I saw a moonrise once and the light was extraordinary, red Earth and cerulean-blue Sky and so quiet. Once I had bought delicious, ripe Arizona peaches and a male sheep attacked me to steal my peach ... lol! The Valley is always beautiful to visit. Thanks for your awesome video, Russ. RICHARD

Hi Russ. I drove up through there way back in 1993. But still, it's so good to watch your video and see how much of my memory is triggered. I'm a little saddened about how much I've forgotten as far as the scenery goes. I was self driving, so a lot of my attention was about keeping an eye on the road in front of me. But this is the real value of your videos. We get to travel the road again. It's much appreciated.

Went here coming South from Moab opposite of the direction in this video. Checked in at Gouldings. Found our spot for our rented Class A. It was in an enclosed canyon with no view. Immediately checked out with a refund which was given no problem. Went across the two lane highway to the Navaho place called "The View". Now we had a place with a view. What a view!

Hey Russ! Been there three times and still want to go back. Love your video. If my mind serves me right, there was a Burger King at the 163 turn off that housed a memorial to the code talkers and had some captured WW2 Japanese artifacts. Another place for a good view of Monument Valley is Mulie Point around Mexican Hat. You'd have to go up Moki Dugway to get to it.

Nice road trip Russ...but you missed stopping at Goulding's Trading Post Museum.: John Wayne's Cabin from filming of "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon" (Goulding's is just a couple clicks west of that KOA you stayed at) The museum exhibits much from the many movies filmed right there in the Valley. Be sure and stop on your next trip through.....Also the main Valley Welcome Center just a click East of that KOA....
