I have done a LOT of travelling in my life -- mostly in the western US. In my "early days", when travelling, I used to wonder what ON EARTH caused the land formations that I was seeing. In college (many moons ago) I had a geology class with a "field trip" lab. The field trips were more fun than I had had in my life (hyperbole, but they were fun). More recently, during the "lock-down," looking for something to keep my mind busy, I found a geology class online. It was incredibly good and informative and renewed my interest in geology. To get to the point, after I watched your latest "field trip" to this area, I looked online to see what I could find about the geology of that area. Basically, it is "volcanic" -- as opposed to some kind of "uplift" of a "Pluton" or "Batholith" -- which is magma that cooled deep under the surface of the Earth and was uplifted to the surface and often folded under great pressures. Regarding some of what is in this Canyon Lake area, the light rock (often with a "pinkish" or light tan color) is "tuff," and some "lahar." "Tuff" is a type of rock made of volcanic ash ejected from a vent during a volcanic eruption; following ejection and deposition, the ash is lithified into a solid rock. "Lahar" is an Indonesian word describing a mudflow or debris flow that originates on the slopes of a volcano. This info is only the "tip of the iceberg" as to what created that fabulous scenery, but it explains some basics -- most of what the visitor sees is volcanic.

There's two places in the US you would enjoy seeing. One is driving Interstate 84 and looking at the folds in the rocks on the north side of the Columbia. The other is at Kodachrome Campground in Kodachrome Basin State Park, Utah. There are tall columns known as sand pipes. I had completed the Geology course that was part of my Geophysical Certificate in the spring term at SAIT in Calgary before we went there that summer. They are sedimentary pipe deposits that filled geysers and then the softer rock surrounding the geyser hole eroded away. One of the park employees one evening did a slide show on a big screen explaining the whole area. Millions of years before those were there it was part of the inland sea (salty just like Alberta's) that covered a vast area' Then volcanic action up thrust the area to around 5,800 feet. Then more millions of years eroded to what we can see now.

A couple of miles farther up is a little stopping area called Tortilla Flat. It has a restaurant, a gift shop and a little convenience store that sells prickly pear ice cream. The little stop over place could be so crowded that no parking space available during the weekend. When heading back to Apache Junction / Mesa, there is Goldfield Mining - ghost town museum. Another tourist attraction that tells history of the west.

In mid August 1970 on a month long road trip from Chicago, my dad drove our family of 4 on the Apache Trail from Phoenix. We were in a 1968 Pontiac Catalina with a vinyl roof and no air conditioning. Fortunately, my dad had 2 spare tires. One in the trunk and one in the rooftop carrier. We needed both before we got to the Theodore Roosevelt Dam. On that trip, we were driving to Arches NP and came across the filming of the finale of the movie "Vanishing Point" in Cisco UT. I'm in possession of slide photos that my dad shot while we were there.

You didn't find the Lost Dutchman, did you ... lol ! The Superstition Mountains are full of picture opportunities. Only problem is the area is so close to Phoenix that it is full of City dwellers, not a place to find solitude much any more. Awesome video, as usual. Thank you, Russ ! When you return to the southern end of Arizona, check for "Patagonia Lake State Park" not far from the Mexican Border. A really nice place to discover. But beware of the Mountain Lions sometimes prowling at night, one must always remain careful and not leave any food outside the RV. RICHARD

The lake was drawn down about 1950. It was really interesting seeing the depth of the lake, another interesting thing was Tortilla Flat that was at the upper end the lake. I live in Eastern Washington now, but I do miss the desert. The trail was gravel when I was a kid in the mid 40s and into the 50s. Thanks for the memories Russ.

Thanks for this and all your other videos. You've given me lots of great ideas for places to explore, and since I took to the road last fall, I've checked a few of them off already. I was lucky enough to snag a spot at Lost Duchman State Park twice this winter, and it's truly spectacular, especially for the hikers. If you get on the Apache Highway again, keep on going past the reservoir. The last mile or two before it dead-ends it becomes a slightly dicey dirt road, but the road up to that point is in my top 10 for scenic roads in the US. If you brave that last bit where it turns to a dirt road, there's a parking lot with some paths and "scenic overlook" is an understattement.

Next time through, just past Canyon Lake a couple more miles up is Tortilla Flat! Really really cool little spot with a shop and ice cream and neat couple of buildings and old bath tub where Wyatt Earp bathed, it's really neat!

Right where you turned around there is a Nice picnic area. You only got as far as the trailer parking for the boat landing. Next time go farther to Tortilla flat and get a Cowboy Burger. NF Campground right across the road 10 bucks a night with a geezer pass... Apache trail is closed at Fish Creek Hill, Washed out and lots of big rocks in the road. Hope they can reopen it. Thanks for lots a Great Videos... Brings back lots of memory's of 3 or 4 years ago...

Apache Trail was one of my goto day trips when I had guests come in to town. Apache lake is literally 48 miles from downtown Phoenix and it seems another world. Folks couldn't believe the scenery. Unfortunatly the road was washed out in 2019 and there are a bunch of government agencies fighting over who should restore it, so you can't do the entire trip to Rooswvelt dam.

I travelled from Pheonix to Roosevelt Lake during one of my adventures in 2002. I found the ghost town at Goldfield fascinating. Really old buildings, particularly the old saloon on a raised area, looked spooky! I hiked the the Superstition Mountains for a while, they are dramatic too. I camped in my tent at the shore of Canyon Lake overnight. A good meal was had in the restaurant which was very quite. Half of the road to Roosevelt Lake is dirt. Don't know whether it is today ? I travelled N.N West to Payson. I liked Payson before it became over developed like so many historic towns. Old timer Englishman from Shropshire raising wonderful memories.

You should have gone further to Tortilla Flats??? Cute little place and always full with visitors. We spent several weeks at Tortilla Flats this winter-the drive beyond towards Roosevelt Dam is an awesome drive, full of spectacular views. The road is washed out due to washout after a fire. Area people are pushing for repair but is is sceptical that might happen. Great area to spend some time.

I didn't even know we had this lake here (lived here in phoenix for over 30+ years) until I saw it on another youtuber's channel..."Traveling Robert" (his vids are fanatastic btw!) and I immediately decided to go there asap. Now, even though he drove all the way thru it I had NO IDEA how that road would be and it most certainly surprised me! I have picked up photography after getting my eyes fixed in 2018/2019 and I have returned there many times to ake photos...last time I FINALLY got on the steamboat! MAGNIFICANT! It is my FAVORITE place in AZ!

From what I read they are working on rebuilding the washed out part of 88 and it should reopen in due time. Horses, hikers, and bicycles are allowed on the 7 mile closed stretch currently.

If you want to see something really impressive take a boat up into the canyon itself. Like a mini grand canyon that goes back a couple of miles to the Apache Lake dam. Steep cliffs and Doll Sheep visible. I had a boat when stationed at Williams AFB years ago and loved taking family up into the canyon.😊

I stopped there in February, found it to be a beautiful canyon and very interesting with the valley of the canyon all owned by the Navajo. Hey Russ if you have not gone to Apache lake in your RV before from Canyon you might want to do it from Roosevelt Dam side once you leave the hard ball road and you come to a rest stop on the left hand side of the road u mite want to turn around and go back someone in the comment section says the road is dicey, heck that's an understatement it is darn near scary the road is very narrow and it is barely big enough for 1 vehicle let alone 2 but going down you will be on the inside but going up is super scary cause then your on the outside with a Ricky rail guard to keep you from toppling over the side of the mountain from the rest stop with BINOs you can see all the cars and pickups that have fallen off the road. Be safe if you do decide to go that way. But on the other hand that canyon is one of the most beautiful parts of the state I've had the privilege to drive through best time to do it is during the day so you can see how pretty it is and safest to but at night there will be maybe 1 or 2 vehicles coming or going

We live near Apache Junction and the Superstition Mountains. It is a great place ride in and enjoy the desert sights . Friends and I ride our side by sides out there all the time. My wife and I also spend a fair amout of time boating on Canyon Lake several times a month, We go out during the week and usually there are only a few boats on the entire lake and it is not crowded at all. The restaurant there has great food and very reasonable prices for food and drinks. The Dolly Steamboat sightseeing runs up the lake are very cool. They also have a sunset dinner cruise that is really enjoyable and a they serve a very nice meal. It will give folks a chance to take in the beauty and enjoy a fantastic cruise. The run up lake about 9 to 10 miles from the Dam is beautiful, with it ending just a half a mile or so below the Apache Lake Dam. The entire canyon is loaded with beauty, and often we will see Desert Bighorn Sheep and other desert wildlife along the shoreline and on the cliffs. I really hope that in the near future AZ govts, will get the road repaired all the way back to Rosevelt Lake that was washed out due to flooding after the fires. Prior to the closing of the Apache Trail it had to be ranked as one of the most scenic and historic in Arizona. The entire area from Apache Junction , to Queen Creek, Globe, Rosevelt Lake and on up to Punkin Center can provide a ton of fun activities, desert scenery. some great food and nice people.
