Used to go out there by street bike or Jeep about once every other week back in the late 90's. On the back road into Mesa you would quite often have cattle and/or horses plodding on the highway. The dam has a number of claims to fame on the historical marker 🙂

I was up there in april camping for a week. I parked right where you did by the bridge over look and walked under the bridge and caught to catfish one day. I see the water was up even more than when i was there. That property below the marina is private land only for members now. We used to camp down there for a small fee and use the boat ramp .

Thanks for another beautiful video, Russ! I have wanted to see the dam and lake in recent years after seeing some video produced by the folks at the Lost Dutchman Museum. At the time it was constructed, it was the tallest masonry dam in the world. Theodore Roosevelt opened the dam at its dedication in March of 1911, but the original name was not Roosevelt Dam, but Salt River Dam. The renaming would not take place until 1959. I'm definitely going to put it on my "must-see" list for AZ! Cheers!

I’m definitely going here next time I’m in AZ. My dad was a power plant operator. So we always visited dams and lived by the dams. Not been to this this dam though. We lived at the Grand Coulee Dam which backed up the Columbia River which that part of the river is called Lake Roosevelt after Franklin Delano Roosevelt who came there when building the Grand Coulee Dam. He was there at Grand Coulee Dam October 2 1937. Love this trip Russ. I lived below the Grand Coulee Dam. You get use to it because the beauty is beyond belief. It was cooler because in the summer if they had to release water it would make the city 10-15 degrees cooler. We could even feel the spray from the water coming over at our house. The water w/o be so much and so powerful you could see the white water and foam a half a mile down river

Spent a couple months around Roosevelt lake for 3 winters. The Apache trail is closed at Fish Creek hill. It was about a 18 percent grade one lane with pull outs. Scary ride with a one ton dually and a truck camper. But the third year it was closed due to numerous washouts and rock slides. Beautiful NF campground (Burnt Corral) on Apache lake. They were going to chip seal and pave part of the road. Maybe that's what the dump truck was about... Brought back memories... Thanks....

The Roosevelt Dam was raised up several years ago. Was there in 1970 and 1996. Looks completely different from 1970 after it was raised. It was a masonry dam resembling stone blocks.

I drove the Apache trail from Phoenix, Apache Junction in 2002, up to Roosevelt Dam and up to the lake, onward to Payson. The first part is hardtop, the balance is dirt. I camped (tent) just before Tortilla Flat. Such a lovely, quiet road back then. I believe it's been closed for a while, lots been washed away. I think those weird forms on the right of the dam, (in the rock), are the old overflow. I looked it up and the dam was expanded in the 80's/90's. I could be wrong but I think that means they built the dam higher? Others probably know. Love the aerial views of the cacti blossoms. That's beyond cool. Sure wish I could head that way but once again,....I've waited too long. It's heating up already and little rv doesn't care for that so much. Anyway - thanks for desert views. Cheers. 👍

The saguaro cactus blossom is the official Arizona state flower. Nice to get those shots of them with the drone. I also recall taking a trip to Roosevelt Dam back in the 1980s with my brother and sister-in-law, (who he had just started dating at the time.) We took the now washed out road from Mesa and drove up to the back of the dam, but we didn't go to the lake itself. After seeing your video, I wish we had. It's a beautiful part of Arizona.

Hi Russ. NSW Australia here watching yet again, one of your top notch road videos. It was way back in 1993 that I drove up the dirt road below the Roosevelt Dam from Apache Junction. I remember being very impressed by the dam because of the huge blocks of stone that was used in its construction that could be seen on the face of it. I then continued on down to Globe.
