I’m a 66 year-old grandmother and I travel solo, so I do it all - the planning, the driving, the navigating, the backing, the repairs (as many of them as I can manage). I’m planning on doing this as long as possible, but it would be nice to have someone to share the load with, and the memories. 😊

@@LessJunkMoreJourney As a blue-eyed person. you should regard direct sunshine as the equivalent of a rainfall of poisoned daggers. You are at statistically higher risk of developing melanoma (as well as ocular cancer) and every sunburn you suffer boosts that risk significantly. Please take more precautions. increase your SPF and apply it liberally. My father often forgot to do so before working in his garden and ended up having bits and pieces of his ears and face sliced off -- and he didn't have the higher risk factors that you do. Not fun.

You made a great choice going to the North Cascades National Park. I lived in Newhalem for about 2 years (1958 or so) as my father built the powerhouse at Newhalem, and worked on Diablo and Ross Dams. When we lived there the road east of Newhalem was tiny and I think only boat traffic could access Ross lake. Your video brought back may memories!

The "g" in Skagit is pronounced like a "j". Loved this video! I lived in the Skagit Valley for almost 18 years, North Cascades National Park was pretty much in my back yard. It wasn't unusual to drive over to Winthrop for lunch, but North Cascades Highway isn't something you want to drive at night. Coming back from a friend's wedding many years ago, I stopped to use the restroom at Washington Pass Overlook and inadvertently locked my keys in my truck. It was late afternoon and I ended up stuck there until around midnight. This was before the cell phone era and there was a pay phone available, so I called a locksmith down in Winthrop, but they never showed up. A huge thunderstorm rolled through sometime around midnight and there were multiple lightening strikes around the immediate area. My friend and I were the only ones there and there had been no other cars on the highway for several hours, so we finally found a good sized rock, wrapped it in my sweatshirt, and busted the rear window to gain access to the cab of the truck. What an adventure! I got a new sliding rear window for the truck the following afternoon.

Ha! Silverwood! I was in high school when it opened in 1988. The park’s biggest attraction was its steam locomotive-they would stage a “hold up” and one time I was a “victim.” They also had a zoo. The next biggest attraction was the corkscrew roller coaster. I remember one time my friend and I rode it 11 times in a row because there was nobody waiting to get on. Speaking of wildfires, one time we were traveling along the Washington and Oregon border near Umatilla and there was a roadside fire. We were in the Subaru and mom had to go through it with both of us kids and I think grandma. The smoke was soooo thick and we couldn’t see anything in front or on the side. We could feel the heat from the fire. Years later mom admitted she thought that was a mistake to go through it-ah well we were tougher back then! It was the 79s or 80s!! Diablo Lake and the Cascade Highway is absolutely stunning. I love it there. I camped for a week outside of Winthrop, near Penrose State Park. That was a few years ago. On the way there from the Seattle side, there was a motorcyclist with his daughter out for a nice ride and they crashed right in front of me. Saw the whole thing! I stopped immediately and was the only one around for a little while. I ran to the little girl first-I saw them both flip in the air and the motorcycle tumbling end over end. They were both okay. I was the one that made the call to their family-why I don’t know but I wanted to let them know they were okay and I was quite calm considering and I was able to pray with the grandma on the phone. Huh…. Life had been interesting now that I think about it ❤😊

I was the planner AND the driver! We took my GoldWing to most all the western USA states from 2002-2010. We towed a trailer that we kept all our camping equipment in. Being we enjoyed camping in 'luxury' we had a 6 man tent with our sleeping bags and air mattresses. Our cooking was with a gas stove and we had a table just incase there wasn't one at the camp sight. Sadly we've had to sell the bike and trailer and enjoy the memories! My wife and I now enjoy hoteling. I don't have as much fun but since we're older..... we deal with it as it is!

@NMorse4 ай бұрын
@LessJunkMoreJourney not too cold. It's usually around the mid 30s to low 40s that time of year. Hwy 20 does shut down for the season but it makes for a great snowshoe location. And be glad you made it over when you did. That fire caused a big mudslide that shut down the hwy for about a week.

OMG! You came through my little town right before Winthrop. At least you got to experience good ice cream at Sheri's Sweet Shop. Our journey was supposed to take us to the GDRV National Rally in Goshen so we could see the new Lineage but the wildland fires was one of the reasons we had to stay home. Love seeing places that are essentially my backyard. So glad you got to stop at Washington Pass and experience the beauty there. You are lucky because the pass was closed for several weeks after you went through due to the Easy Pass fire and then a big mudslide. The pass just reopened a few days ago. Newhalem is a neat little place to visit, too. BTW, I'm the planner in our family!

I've heard stories of how people rving have had them stolen, or cables chewed on by critters. I know this is a temporary rv just for this season so you aren't looking to mount it, but just be aware as I'm sure you are especially if you leave it out overnight.

It wasn’t in the area of what the map said the fire was. Jasper was evacuated the next day. I remember driving through a fire that was beside the highway when I was a young teen. Spiders spin webs between trees by using the wind to carry their lightweight silk threads from one tree to another. Here's how: 1) Bridge thread: The spider starts by climbing to a high point, like a tree branch, and releasing a long, sticky silk thread into the wind. The breeze carries the thread until it catches on another branch. 2) Second thread: The spider crosses the bridge thread with a second thread, which is pulled down by the spider's weight to create the web's center. 3) Spiral: The spider then moves out from the center to create a spiral web. 4) Capture web: Finally, the spider creates a final spiral web from the outside in. Spiders are born knowing how to make webs, and they can produce different types of silk for different purposes. For example, orb spiders can produce seven different types of silk.

I haven't read all the comments, but you were at Newhalem with the bridge to the trail of cedars. We spread my parents ashes there, my dad always called the N.Cascades his cathedral ❤

Question: do you miss a tow vehicle? I don't know if I would like having to use the RV just going to sites to see and leave our spot

I’m a solo RVer, so if I just show up and don’t know where we’re going, we’re in trouble. 🤣 I also bite my ice cream, JJ. 👍🏻

Our 1999 Alaska trip, wildfires had closed the highway near Burwash Landing. Just reopened the morning we were headed through and still flames on both sides of highway. While we were up there the fire came back through and burned up most of the vehicles and structures. We dealt with a lot smoke and fires. Smoke so bad in Dawson City that we could only stay 2 nights.
