I swear to god this applies to not just superbikes even used luxury cars. I’ve faced this exact same sunken cost fallacy with my Mercedes E class when my parents told me to buy a nice new economy car. I’ve very much faced the crying alone and losing sleep with issues with the vehicle! Let alone zero reliability! Checking all the fluids and praying to god it starts and cranks atleast! Thank you for such awesome content I’ve subscribed to you for a very long time and never get tired of your content.

This is my story.. I bought my first naked sportsbike Z900 from Pune in the year 2018 brand new, I was 26 years old. Im from Shillong, Meghalaya, NE had no Kawasaki dealer back then. Sold it in 2021, then bought a 2018 Street Triple 765 RS (Used only 2000kms!). The bike was in mint condition. Got it from a reputed second hand superbike dealer in Delhi. In fact I never had to fly to Delhi to get the bike. The bike was delivered at Guwahati VRL logistics, it took sometime for the delivery because of the steel cage shortage. Anyways standing at only 5"6 and weighing at 60kgs. The STR 765 was the perfect bike for my weight and size. I could flick and ride this bike 10times more skillful than the z900. Im a big time car and bike racing enthusiats, having participated and podiums in local car rallying events. Forward to 2023, Guwahati has its first short track for go kart and bikes. I bought a CBR250R (2012), upgraded almost everything (Bigger block, high lifts, suspensions, USD forks, exhaust, powertronics, etc etc) Im currently using this bike only in the track as its made for the track. I was blessed with a son last year and I had no time on both the bikes (especially the STR 765, I sold it off for a good price. The bike was still in top notch condition. Nowadays I go to the track and do my track days, thats the most fun I have all day. trying to improve my skills, whenever im free I go. Well my point is, no matter what bike you own, or whatever big bikes you want to have, get it. For me i dont find them fun anymore, especially here in the hill station, its no point having big bikes and no roads to use their full potential. For us here 400cc bikes are the best. When I used to ride the z900, I had a hard time keeping up with the 390s. Theres no comparison with these small bikes in terms of fun, control, weight. Plus riding in the highway is so dangerous nowadays, I have to think of my family first, Ive fallen so many times in the track, but I got up and walked away everytime. Imagine those crashes I had in the track, the same I might not be here writing this comment if it was on public roads. My friends and buddies, I urge you, if you want to ride hard and learn skills, do it at the track, beat your own personal best times, you will improve. Its no point riding fast and hard on public roads. At the end of the day, second hand bikes has to have their purpose. For me my CBR300 (now) serves me better than the STR! I have no plan on buying big bikes anymore. Its all about yourself, what you like and your ride.

Almost fell for this used superbike trap in 2021. Always dreamt of owning a harley (still do ) seriously searched for under 5 lakh bike. Somebody talked sense and hinted about these problems (not in as much detail as u explained) God bless him. Bought a Thar in 2022 Super happy with it with service cost of around 5000 /10000 kms .Kept the superbike dream in backburner until one which meets my criteria comes in market. until then enjoying my biking fantasies with my Enfield Machismo 350 1999 model.

Everything you said is very true. I purchased a 2016 cbr1000rr repsol edition from bike universe in Mumbai in 2024 feb. It had 10k kms . Now all good until I found a video on KZbin of the same bike in Delhi where the odo was 9k kms in 2019. I was shocked! These guys are big dealers and have a massive presence on the internet and they’re selling a super bike with tampered meter. Now when I started diving deep , the same bike was also sold by “ the bike shop racing “ in Mumbai. He’s apprently the largest dealer in India. And before him it was with one more dealer. On paper it was a second owner bike but later realized it had more than 5-6 owners. All these guys are scammers!! Finally sold the bike to the same dealer in loss. I just wanted to get rid of the motorcycle. I didn’t confess in front of him that I am aware of the odo tamper or he woundnt buy back. Long story short, just get a brand new superbike when ever you can afford one.

I faced it with luxury cars also, i bought a used Audi A6 and was lucky enough to catch hold of an expert mechanic who could source parts from bangalore or abroad. But eventually it was becoming a drag on my time and money to replace those parts. Even though it was very cheap compared to buying new still it was a significant outlay and investment of time in Garage.

I was about to fall for this trap 😅 I have a Duke390 and was about to get a used 2 years old ST 765R with around 7k kms on the odo. Then I sat in my room, took pen and paper, calculated all the upcoming costs plus the maintenance and running costs. Then I came to realise, it's not worth it at this stage. Maybe sometime later.

Only people who have more money can afford super premium bikes or cars. I feel in India getting super bikes is waste of time and money. Most of Indians will think about mileage coz of petrol costs. Even maintaining above 200 cc bikes with mileage 35-40 kmpl is difficult these days. Maintaining two wheeler, petrol variants is very hard.

The ONLY exception to this is if you know the person you're buying from well, if he has all SERVICE records, and is known for painstakingly keeping his vehicle pristine. Or else another option is certified used like Triumph or Ducati's program, but even then the bikes dont come cheap. they still come with company warranty program for say 1 year. But its always best to buy NEW. Or stick with Indian bikes, no harm in that at all. Buy a good 400cc/450cc bike preferably single cylinder, it will be easy on pockets.

one things you forgot add or mentioned here is that, deprecation value of any super bikes from 1st hand to 2nd hand to 3rd and 4th hand example you have purchased brand new zx10r the moment you take out your bike from showroom your 10% value gets decreased. your are selling that bike after 1 year no wear and tear still marginal deprecation would happen here remember 10% has been already depreciated now dealer will do straight 30% depreciate with EX show room price Not with your ONROAD price. now your selling that 20 lcs bike in just 11 or 12 lcs within year that how deprecation happen on any engine. that the ongoing scam happening in preowned superbike dealer shop they will sell it to 16lcs or more those dealers are making more money than showroom people show body should spread awareness for this and I Feel this forum is perfect to show

Very nice and informative for buyers who want to buy a used superbike. ******Maintaining is the biggest money pit. ********** My personal experience is below in New Zealand. Bought a cb1000r which had done 35k. I'll convert the cost to INR. Purchased for 4lakhs the motorcycle which was serviced by the previous owner. Fork rebuilt (15k) New tires- Michelin Power 5(35k) New battery (12k) ------------ My expenses since owning it Service after riding it for 5k kms, Valve clearance @40,000 km (60k inr) New brake pads, EBC (16kinr) New sprocket and chain (20k inr) New tires - Michelin Road 6 (cause they last longer than race tyres)(35k inr) Front-wheel bearings (10kinr) Steering head bearings (12kinr) Service 45k (15kinr) Parts another 20kapprox (aftermarket levers, led indicators, tail tidy, radiator guard, Bar end mirrors, new grips every 10k km ) Approx 1.6 lakhs were spent on maintenance in 2 years of owning it.

Don't make a decision in haste. Talk to a private garage that specializes in superbike repair and service. Pay them and request them to check the bike thoroughly. If the current owner refuses to your request to get the bike checked at a private/different garage then walk away and look for a different bike.

Make a video on the bikes you currently own (or owned in the past) and what problems you faced along with solutions, i mean major problems like say engine issue, fork leaks, collar set issues. It may be helpful for people who might have the same model and facing same issue. This video is so true even for smaller bikes best example being bs3 390. There is demand for it now but unfortunately most bikes in the used market is in crap state with sellers quoting “mint condition”.

Great podcast, very relevant. In this context, you can release another podcast on 'buying a fresh superbike'. Even though you have talked about it before,it is worth doing an episode on how most youths fall a prey to owning a superbike 1st hand only to realise the sky-high maintenance costs later. The problem is: most youths(& people) are posers (instagrammers) & not riders. If only people did a weekend ride every week with the machine they have, they would come to realise their selves and their wants & needs very well. Riding is all about the human & not machine. Mind over matter. A superbike should be bought very consciously. I would rather say 'to buy the next two-wheeler consciously'. Know the two-wheeler's pros and cons inside out and then decide consciously.
