I am so happy for your setup with the retrobands. You were in the exact right spot for safety and repair. We had blowouts on our 5th wheel. We had tire monitoring, but it didn't matter because the tire blew at the same moment the alarm went off. We were on I 25 in Santa Fe. The rubber from the tire wrapped around the axle. Hubby did manage to get it off, but we thought we were going to need some type of strong saw or grinder to cut the steel bands. He used a pry bar and finally get it off. The tires had very few miles and were less than 18 months old. God bless you and keep rolling.

I am so glad you guys are okay. This must be national tire blowout week. We live in southern Florida and were leaving town for hurricane Nichole. We went North and turned onto I-10 west. We had the cruise control set to 67 mph. The winds from Nichole were pushing us around a bit, but at least the rains hadn't started yet. This 18 wheeler pulled up beside us and tooted his horn to get my attention. I looked over and he made a circling motion with his hand. I had no idea what was up, but figured I should pull over and take a look at everything. The passenger side looked good along with the car. I went around to the driver's side. The car looked good. I was starting to wonder why he had tooted at me and made the circle motion with his hand. Then I saw the rear tires on the RV. We have tandom rear axles. The front tire had blown out. We were only 2 miles to the next exit so we drove on. Right off the exit I could see a Truck Stop of America with a tire shop. We wheeled in. The salesman assured me they had a new tire in stock and he would have a mechanic change the tire right now. We had to unhook the car and back the RV up to Bay 5. After doing that we discovered they didn't have our tire in stock. They recommended another tire store 4 miles away in town. We called them and they said if he ordered the tire in the next 3 minutes it would be in today at 1 pm. We said do it and drove over to their shop. 1 pm turned into 3 pm. By this time Nichole was just arriving. There was heavy winds and pouring down rain. Their end bay had a roof, but open sides. Even with the roof the wind blew the rain in on us. This guy was amazing! He changed the tire without removing the rim from the RV. Fortunately like you we didn't have any damage to the RV. He checked the air in all the tires. Sadly they were all low except for one. He aired us up and we paid the bill. By the time we got the car hooked up it was dark out. Nichole was still with us bringing heavy rain and winds. We called around and there was a campground only 3 miles away with an open spot. We pulled in and I hooked up power and water. It was raining too hard for anything else. I even left the car hooked up. The next morning we woke up to find we had a beautiful view of a lake out our front window. God is good! 🤗 Now we are on our way home. We are staying in the Villages at Wildwood for two nights before going home.

Stacie and Tom, we are glad that everything turned out very well. We had a similar thing happen back in August. We were driving down I 35 south of the DFW area when we heard a bang, not loud but we thought the big rig next to us may have thrown a stone. Our tires were about four years old with 21,000 miles on them.We continued on to Waco, about an hour away and also stopped for fuel before arriving in Waco. DH forgot to check the tires, no los of pressure or change in how the coach was driving. When we arrived in Waco DH found a flap in the passenger steer tire. It was not as large as yours. Coachnet found a tire shop that located a tire for us. We also have Rettrobands. An appointment was made at NIRVC in Lewisville the following week. By then we were in Austin. Our experience was the same as yours. Drove to Lewisville the night before the appointment and were back in Austin by the following night. We, too, are thankful for the Rettrobands. The damage could have been much worse if we didn't have them. Travel on!

A new Michelin tire blowing a sidewall? With no sidewall rot or cracks? I turned wrenches close to 50 years. Owned an automobile repair business 35 of those years. Retired full timer the last 4 years. I suspect what happened was when the retrobands were installed originally, some tire machines are very aggressive on breaking the tire bead. The machine's bead breaker weakened the sidewall and damaged the cord when installing the retrobands. Not good for any tire to be dismounted and remounted. I have seen Michelin 14 ply tires go 10 to 12 years when cared for and covered from the sun and UV light with low mileage. I personally wouldn't run a tire that old. Glad you are safe.

Really interesting, I remember the other video at NIRVC in Lewisville (close to where I lived in Argyle). This is such a great video as to why you should have retroband. Yesterday I was at a large Newmar authorized dealer in Cemtral Florida going over the details of purchasing a 2022 Dutch Star 4081. The sales rep, really nice guy was adamant that we DO NOT need them and they’ve taken more off them put on. I watched the video with the NIRV owner who purposely blew the tire as he was driving. Confused why he would discourage us from putting them on. When we were at NIRVC in Lewisville in December (visiting our daughter), they were all about it! Confused why he would discourage us; however, still not going to convince me against it. I’ll just do it in Lewisville when we’re there this summer. As a first time RV owner, I don’t think I could go without it!! Thanks again.

Glad all ended well and you are safe. Any chance that tire was damaged when you were sideswipped? 100% agree about if you hear an unusual noise that you need to stop and check ASAP. We heard what we thought might be an air dryer activating on a semi that was passing us on our last trip, but louder than normal. Immediately started checking mirrors and looking for a safe place. Sure enough saw smoke and debris from a blown trailer tire. Found a wide shoulder and swapped it in about 15 minutes. Luckily it was passenger side as we were headed into Indy just before morning rush hour.

Wow, I have to agree you were super lucky that the chunk of rubber didn't decide to depart that tire at highway speeds! I understand the retroband may have helped keep the tire's shape and keep it from coming apart, but had you been going at highway speeds it may have not had the same outcome and could have resulted in lots of damage to the coach. I'm glade you are safe and I'm impressed with the Retrobands, I might consider those for our Class A, can you confirm you did not lose air in the tire?
@rvamericayall2 жыл бұрын
We can definitely confirm that in our case! Of course that wouldn’t always be the case but being able to keep control of the rig is what it’s about!

I am wondering if it wasn’t the retroband running on the sidewalk that caused the blow out.😊

Nope, it wasn’t rubbing, I saw it when it came off.

Curious why the pressure monitors didn't respond. Retrobands aren't supposed to interfere with them either.

The tire didn’t go flat, that’s one of the points we made in the video! The tire shop couldn’t even believe that!

@@rvamericayall I've been tracking the retrobands for a while. The first gen were dicey (to say the least) but they did good by the early adopters in providing them with Gen 2 for free. Good to hear that if the unit is damaged during tire swaps they'll take care of that too. I'm sold.

What would a tech have done to replace the tire and get the retroband off the tire if you were on the side of the road and not hear a shop?
@rvamericayall Жыл бұрын
It’s doable. You take it off with a screwdriver, it’s a manual job to take it off, no actual equipment needed. It will take a little time though, working in tight quarters!
@roydavis22422 жыл бұрын
Just for clarification, if it didn't lose air, it wasn't a blowout. It was a tire issue or failure, but not a blowout. That's why there wasn't any damage. However, if you'd been at highway speed, it likely would have blown. The issue is that people with these products tend to be less diligent about inspecting tires.
@rvamericayall2 жыл бұрын
That sidewall is blown out for sure, luckily it didn’t totally explode & we are very diligent about our inspections & maintenance!

Exactly they think these products are the answer all to everything then they don’t check tire pressure

@@rvamericayall Sounds like(and looked like) there wasn't a hole through your sidewall. How much air did the tire lose. Y'all said the tpms didn't go off, the tire didn't even look low in pressure. Did you check the pressure before the tire shop. I've had tires(on my car not my coach) develope a balloon on the sidewalk that looked like a golf ball under the rubber. It was caused by a internal failure that allowed air in the tire to get between the outer ply of the sidewall and the inner plies of the sidewall(your tire has a lot of plies). When that outer bubble burst with 100 + lbs of air in it, it's very loud. The inner plies may stop leaking at that point, especially once you come to a stop. It's great they don't charge you to reinstall the retro bands. Aren't they around $ 4k for a set of two. How hard is it to find a qualified dealer to reinstall? Sounds like a great product that would certainly give anyone peace of mind. Hopefully it will cheaper and it will possible for a roadside tire repair/service company can come out remove them replace the damaged tire and put the retro bands back on for maybe 100.00 up charge. Probably a pipe dream, but it's my dream. Lol. Y'all have a beautiful coach. Ours is a 2003 Newmar Dutch Star D.P. and we love it. We bought it in 2016, we're the 2nd owners. Safe travels, and enjoy the journey.

Been looking at the Retrbands. Thanks! Is it just steers that get them? Also, my chasis manual says not to use Coach jacks to lift and change tire. Not exactly sure why unless it's a safety issue.
@rvamericayall Жыл бұрын
Only put them on steer tires & our jacks are hydraulic, maybe yours are electric and not rated for enough weight???

I have questions. DOT date code of the failed tire? Did you contact Michelin? What did they say? Why no close up picture of the “hole”? If the tire did not go flat then the Rettroband had no effect? Are you compensated by Rettroband? This looks a bit like a commercial for them.
@rvamericayall2 жыл бұрын
The tire was second week of 2021 & I disagree with your assessment because I think the Rettroband helped the tire stay inflated because it didn’t allow all of the weight of the front of the RV to affect the rest of the rubber on the tire. I mean the mass of the Rettroband. I didn’t contact Michelin because we had insurance that covered the tire! Frank, if you watched the later part of the video I stated that we have NO financial affiliation with Rettroband & make NO money at all from them! We paid for ours & are very thankful we did! I want everyone to be safe, that’s the main thing!

Interesting. If you had a hole in the tire, the TPMS monitor should have triggered a low air pressure alarm.

That’s the whole surprise, the tire held the air pressure! We wouldn’t believe it if we didn’t live it!

TPMS does not immediately alert you of pressure loss, but you are lucky that the tire didn't shred like a recap usually does.

My take fellows: In a front blowout at a curved highway speed, my understanding is that the type of suspension (not the retro band)is the one that keeps the front part of the class-a RV balanced enough to manage the event from becoming fatal. Any experts out there?
