I went to my wifes aunts house in Pattaya, I got lost on the way and met a ferang that had an appartment and lived with a Thai girl.He was a great guy and told me he loves living there. He told me he meets lots of other ferangs and plays tennis with them. He loves his life in Pattaya. I live in the sticks in Ang Thong and I am the only white person that lives there. I need to tell you that while we were building our house, I would go for a walk around the block that has maybe 8 houses on it and 3 rice fields. It is about 3 miles around the block. Every day when I was by the rice fields about a mile and a half from the closest house a Thai people would pull over to give me a ride, all I wanted was a bit of exercise. This happened everyday for the next three weeks untill they all realized I did not need a ride. I love Thai people, most of them will do anything to help out! I can not wait to get home to Thailand 🎉

Very good, but whenever I was walking in a remote area, dogs can be a problem, my Thai girlfriend always has a long stick, I’ve seen local people throw stones to scare them away, I’ve never done that!

@@roygoad2870 I walked around the block with my wife. She also got a stick. I told her she didn't need a stick and to just stay calm. Well she shooed the dog away no problem. The next evening my wife didn't want to walk so I did by myself. When I got to the other side of the block where the dogs were, I just stayed calm until the dog bit my ankle and pierced the skin with his teeth. Long story short, I was treated for rabies because my son in law found out it was a wild dog, nobody owned him.

I first came to Thailand in 1999 and came back for numerous vacations before moving to Thailand in 2003 age 33. I lived in Bangkok for 10 years and I've now lived in Khon Kaen for 10 years, teaching in English. There were times when life was tough in Bangkok living in a tiny studio apartment near a BTS living on less than USD400. I did my bachelor degree in Bangkok and have done multiple border runs in my time. I wouldn't trade my experiences.

Hello there foreigner, I am Thai, and here is a little more information from a local perspective. 3:03 Question 2: You can buy a motorbike at any shop but for foreigners, you need more documents from immigration and your embassy. For your driver's license, I recommend you take a course at a driving school, they will provide you a fast track. 5:32 Question 3: The Internet here in Thailand is very good. I once went into the deep forest on the west side of Thailand near the border of Myanmar for military training I can still use 5G. 7:29 Question 4: You can also call their call center and buy a SIM card package they will change your SIM package. You might have to get a new SIM at the nearest provider shop but some providers might send you the SIM card to your condo. 12:05 Question 6: Pattaya breakdown - Sax, party, nightlife, not family-friendly. Thai people prefer Bangsaen over Pattaya. 15:33 Question 8: You can live in Thailand very well for $800/month. Based on my experience also got $800/month from my salary, I can go to the bar almost every week, take a dinner cruise, and rooftop bar, and eat at a restaurant sometimes All for that in 1 month of course I don't live that way every month I also need to saving the money 555. 18:20 Question 9: Check out the company called PropertyScout they hire many foreigners as real estate agents, and IT. I used to work in that company. 21:50 Question 10: Many Thai people pet a cat in their condo even if their condos are not pet-friendly (Take their pet to the pet hotel first and move into the condo and then hide the pet in the bag) of course don't let the staff notice even if they notice your pet doesn't cause any problem, they just ignore it. For Dogs go find a pet-friendly condo. (Just sharing find the pet-friendly condo is the right way)

Mate really appreciate your time and effort. Very grateful. I've been to Thailand multiple times and stay in the Pattaya area. I think it's a very misunderstood place and most people judge it well before even going there or looking beyond the bars and girls. I prefer Jomtien, Ban Chang and Pratunmak areas. There's great beaches, markets, restaurants and yes, bars, clubs and live music.. it's about lifestyle, routine and your life choices. The girls in Pattaya are there to make a living, support families and get a better life. So as long as you keep your eyes open, your wallet reasonable close and your attitude positive it's a brilliant place to be. Been to BKK, Chaing Mai, Phuket etc and I love Thailand and will be coming to live in 2025 hopefully 🤞. But the beach and the hustle and bustle of the Pattaya area is brilliant. My life, my choice. My suggestion to the 76 year old woman moving to Thailand... I'd suggest you change your condo plan and rent, not buy. In countries like the US with high rents, buying makes sense. But at age 76 I don't know that makes sense for you in Thailand. Please consider saving that $150k or whatever to buy a condo and instead have a higher monthly budget, and generate interest on the savings. Depending on where you live and what you want, you can likely find a nice condo for about $400 a month, and no worries about costs for repairs, legal issues of ownership, et cetera. Rents are so cheap in Thailand many expats just permanently rent. Just a suggestion! The rest of your plan sounds great!

My brother moved to Chiang Mai when he was in his mid 20s. Rented initially, then got to know the lay of the land. Learned to speak Thai, and got a job in tourism. He loved it for the 20+ years he spent in Thailand. His language skills were so good, he eventually spoke Lao, Burmese etc and when he came to BKK everyone quizzed him about his northern dialect. Yes moving to Thailand can be done when you're in your 20s.

FYI…in USA here and Cigna Global looked good for our insurance BUT they will not fill out paper needed for OA visa!! OA visa applied from USA must have a form with 3 signatures and a stamp! Work around was a cheap Thai insurance policy the took 15 min online and instantly provided the special certificate with signatures and stamp. So….learn from our mistake.

The Thai policy has high deductible and doesn’t cover everything- but satisfied the OA requirements of 100,000 usd coverage. Cigna covers 1 mil usd w lower deductible- and covers illness/cancer etc. Thai policy was less than 10% cost of Cigna. Both policies were paid for a year- not monthly. We are in our 50’s

Pattaya for me is the best place to live imo, it has everything. There’s so much more to Pattaya than the nightlife. There’s so many different areas like Jomtien, Pratanmak, Naklua, Wongamat, East Pattaya, Rayong, Bang Saray, Na Jomtien and more. I’ve been living here for 4 years, haven’t been to a beer bar etc in that time. Have a Thai girlfriend that doesn’t drink also. I’ve joined many groups of people that socialise doing sports or hiking. It’s a very relaxed lifestyle with great restaurants and shopping facilities plus so many different attractions. Also it’s a great base to travel anywhere as Bangkok’s airports and U Tapo are less than 2 hours away. My budget is around $2000 a month. I have a car and motorbike, which is great, less than an hour’s drive to many beaches, islands, temples and beauty spots.

Chris & Everyone, For those of us interested in Pattaya, the gentleman I follow is Daz with the channel "Everything Pattaya ". He is a superb reference and specific to Pattaya with a wide range of content and recommendations from real-estate services, visa services, cellular service, medical, etc. He does the whole range of condo tours with pricing and types of neighborhoods and delves deeply in the adult entertainment services in respect to not getting ripped off and how to have fun without losing control, or getting taken advantage of by the lovely ladies. Listening to that channel, I basically knew what to expect before I got there and arrived prepared.

@@Regi869 .. the vibe in Pattaya is very chill. Everyone is on Thai time which is just like Hawaiian time, incidentally. Tourism is the key driver, and with in that adult entertainment is king. It is very, very affordable if you are careful.

I would suggest to go to Pattaya (or Jomtien) first and see the lifestyle down there for yourself. You will either love it or hate it (I am in the second category). Before my first trip to South-East Asia, Pattaya was near the top of my list, after 3 days there, I went to small towns nearby (Trat and Koh Chang) just to take time to make the point on everything I saw around me when I was there. In the next 12 years, I went back to Pattaya 4 or 5 times for social events, but that city is definitively not for me. There is a good group of expats from my province (state) living in Jomtien, seeing them a few time a year will be enough for me.

This will be my fourth trip to Thailand. I came to shoot TV commercials, took my 12-year-old daughter from the United States for a trip, spoke at a conference and went and visited my son, who moved to Bangkok after leaving college. All those trips were mellow and groovy. But now, and I’m going in March for a month, I’m starting to get concerned about the air pollution, which other than Chiang Mai during burning season and is way crazy. But I’m looking at the air quality index in Bangkok and while not as bad as New Delhi. It’s pretty freaking crazy. I’m very surprised that nobody is mentioning this, and I will admit, I haven’t looked at every comment. Because this is like a serious problem and I know it’s been ongoing in the government is either a Asleep at the Wheel or corrupt. But what do you say about this because it completely affects how much time anyone would want to spend in Bangkok.

Wear N95 mask whenever you're outdoor. Keep yourself in aircon building for the rest of time, this two things I do on daily basis. The particles will be less in raining season starting from May until November, hopefully the monsoon comes in time each year. I live in Greater Bangkok and check the IQ Air map everyday too. That's all what you can do and get the problem relieved by at least 60 %.

Regarding Question 8, moving to Thailand at 76, one thing to check into is the cost and availability of health insurance. It may be difficult to obtain because of the age or very expensive.

Self Insure. Buy the most basic plan that the government requires (depending on your Visa) with the highest deductible. Then plunk $3 million baht in a Thai bank account. That is your "worse case scenario" insurance. Print off a copy of your bank statement, write "For Medical Emergency Only " on top of you rbank statement along with phone number of your closest contact. Stick that printed bank statement in your pocket and never leave your condo without that piece of paper in your pocket. You are good to go !!!

Regarding US Citizens working overseas, the overseas earnings exclusion is $120K USD. Question #6: There is probably at least one KZbinr for each of the Top 5 to 10 Thai cities. For Pattaya, one top channel might be Rides 4 Kicks.

Americans you are tax free up to a certain amount I think 2023 was $122,000 ( still pay SS and Medicare) You do still have to file but file a tax exempt unless you earn over the amount depending on the year. I’ve lived and worked abroad since 2006.

Here is my $0.02 worth...if you are thinking of moving to Thailand and go to Bangkok to check it out for a bit, try and choose a hotel or place to stay that is near the BTS / transit station (like Nana or Asok). You will be more willing to use it and explore out a little more. Real life example I stayed at Ad lib in July for a week and the walk to Nana looks like it is short but the hopping on and off the sidewalk, dodging people makes it longer than you think. If I was closer I would have rode it more, it is super easy to get a tix and to get around.

Good advice. I love Bangkok, but would never live there. I've stayed at the Sukhumvit Suites three times now. Asok is the best starting location to explore Bangkok. Being next to the BTS, MRT, and Terminal 21 makes it so convenient.

Hi Chris, great video but I like tp comment on Sharon #8. She is 76 years old, her health insurance alone would probably be over 400 USD a month. Even with owning her own condo, I can't see her making it on 800 $$. Unless she plans on sitting home watching netflix. BTW, as far as I know, retirement visa requires 25K usd + health insurance. How much money do you need for a retirement visa in Thailand? Must meet any of the financial requirements: Security deposit of THB 800,000 in a Thai bank account for 2 months prior to the visa application. Monthly Income of 65,000 THB regularly deposited in a Thai bank account.

My wife and I have a house in Chaiyaphum but live in Australia, and I am looking forward to retiring there in a few years but was worried that I might struggle until I learned to speak some Thai. Thanks to your advice I found a facebook group for my town with a lot of people in a similar situation, so thanks for the suggestion. As far as internet goes, I guess you would say that Chaiyaphum is semi rural but we still have fibre to the premesis at a speed good enough to monitor 6 cameras from Australia and it is a quarter of the price here in Australia.

My plan is quite simple, when retired, I would like to open a small coffee shop in Bangkok, nothing complicated... My question is twofold (maybe threefold): What type of Visa, in which sequence will I need them and what will I be able to do under those visa? The plan: Tourist Visa for 2 months : Renting the Condo, opening the Thai Bank accounts, bringing 2-3 luggage of stuff. Go back to Canada: Transfer my financial stuff, make sure the different pensions will be deposed in my Thai bank account, sell everything else in Canada. Retirement Visa for a year: Bring the balance of my stuff (2-3 luggage) Investor Visa (after) : Starting the business and working. Would I be able to do the 'scouting' for the business when I will be under the Retirement Visa, Renting the location for the business, etc.? When should I switch from the retirement visa to the investor visa?

I have to second the motion that this is a awesome video, Chris I like the format. Right now I live in a 40-foot motorhome full-time and I'm out in the deserts of Arizona right now. I have a almost nine year old 100 lb German shepherd with me and I am coming to Thailand in less than a month. I'll be there for 2 weeks and I'll spend time and the place that I'm considering moving to like Hua Hin, Pattaya, Chang Mi. I wish I could go for a month but I don't want to leave my dog that long. I don't want to buy anything when I get to Thailand permanently but I need a place not far from the beach either a house or apartment that takes dogs. I would definitely appreciate a video just on pets in Thailand. Such as different food options and vets and how Thai people view things like that. I went from a 3600 square foot house to a 320 square foot RV. It was hard at first but now I love it. Looking forward to getting rid of some more things. Simplifying my life even more and being in one spot where I could develop relationships with people and doctors and dentists and things like that. Near a good expat community. Not interested in the nightlife much. But would definitely be interested in meeting some ladies who are not in the sex industry if possible. Looking forward to more videos Chris.

I like your videos, thanks for the info. I've seen the KZbinrs in the Phillipines, and so far, if I had to choose one or the other it would be Thailand. I heard the food is better, and they have plenty of hospitals around, which is important to me. In the Philippines I heard 3 big hospitals. As we get older I don't want so few hospitals around. Also can have a smoke since it's legal in Thailand.

If you like drinking and you enjoy company, instead of bars do what the Thais do. Spent many great afternoons packing a bottle of local whiskey into my backpack, take your portable speaker and head to the beach or local park. Buy some street snacks and cold cans of soda, layout your blanket/mat, pump the tunes and crack the Sangsom. many Thais are not rich and this is how they like to relax also.

I’ve been back-and-forth in Thailand for a year now with a tourist visa and I’ve always purchased just a one-way ticket but this time coming back out of Billy Bishop or even Doha they requested very much that I have a return ticket and I said I’ve never done that before and they said when are you coming back and I said I’m not sure it seemed a little uneasy this time. You need to communicate. I tell the girlfriend I will match X% that she gives to her family. If I am successful of course I will share. Very lucky my Thai family acts and treats me like USA family, sometimes better.

If you are a young kid, go get digital skills that enable you to work remotely. The other thing is to buy a business in Thailand. Saturated expat businesses in Bkk and the other main tourist cities but if you go further afield to say some of the 2nd or 3rd tier cities, there are all sorts of opportunities to open a cafe, gym, guesthouse, sportsbar etc etc. Check it out when you get here. It's crazy how much you can buy or build in the regions of Thailand for like 25k USD.

Wherever you go you are still going to have to pay taxes if you make an income be it from work, investments, bank interest etc. I’m from Australia and I would prefer to keep my money in Australia because currently the banks pay 5% interest on savings. Also the Australian government protects its citizens from loss with a guarantee up to $250k per bank account. If you have more than $250k you have it in separate accounts and it’s all protected. Thailand banks have no interest and no protection.

Protection is 1 Million Baht for each different bank (not each branch) you use, but only for accounts in Thai Baht.

Scooters I'd think. Most people don't take motorcycle licenses for short term travelling, or even long term, if you're situated in a major city.

Hi RW4U. 35 yr rule for social security. A lot of countries have this rule to get a pension when you retire. If you work overseas for a period of time, you may get a reduced pension from your home country. Unless you have worked in home country for more than 35yrs. Thanks for the channel. Cheers

Chris, In your next Q&A episode can you talk about the 12 month rental contract you need to have to get the residency certificate when applying for a non-o visa? I don't see this requirement discused in online forums. I assume people are going the visa agent route and this residency certificate is being "facilitated" between the agent and Thai immigration.

Hello Chris, fellow Canadian here. Been following you for a few yrs. Love the videos and the invaluable info. I have been to Thailand many times in my 20s and 30s.....now 47. I am about 8-10yrs away from moving to Thailand.....hopefully sooner. Just wondering what it is like there for senior care/assisted living. So far the plan is to live there for 10yrs then likely move back to Canada depending on my health in my 70s-80s+ and the health care in Thailand. Keep up the awesome work!

Hey Chris! Loving the new channel! Myself and my husband are in our early 40’s with two young kids, 4&6. We’ve been loosely looking into investing in a condo or villa in koh Samui or Phuket, but are wondering if it’s worth while or a good investment in general. Is it easy to rent out accommodation or use the property for Airbnb’s? Is there many hidden fees/taxes for foreigners purchasing in Thailand? Is it a tedious process? Heading to Samui in July so may meet up with a real estate agent to get some more info. Any input or info from you would be so so so appreciated!! Thanks again for all your incredible videos!

Question 1: American taxes. Having lived in China for 8 years, I filed every year. Yes, it is a pain, but with the threshold of foreign income, it is doubtful that you will ever have to pay on your income since it is taxed in your new home country. There are certain stipulations though. You have to live in the country for a certain period of time to be "tax-free". I suggest filing with something like Turbotax that walks you through the process. Question 2: If you do get a license, the process gets much, much easier if you have a current, valid license from your home country. Also, if you have an international license, it gets better. Question 3: I lived in a small agricultural area town for a short time. Rice paddies as far as the eye can see. I had good internet and phone service there. I agree with Chris. There should be only a scant few places in Thailand where it would be a problem. Question 4: One thing about AIS is that you can not pay your bill at 7-11, versus the other big companies. Sometimes a 7-11 will have an AIS machine inside or outside, but the staff will not be able to assist you with anything about AIS. Question 5: I think the key takeaway from this posting is that you need to have a good amount of startup cash to get yourself settled well. You can not come here penniless and have a smooth transition. After 4-6 months, then you can start relying on a steady set of expenses that you can plan with. Question 6: Great point Chris. It is like living in any country, each region is different. Why would you ask a Floridian in the USA what life is like in California. Especially of they have never lived there. They may have vacationed there a few times, but living someplace and visiting someplace are two completely different animals. The same holds true for Thailand. Chiang Mai is night and day different from Bangkok. You travel to some of these lesser-known provinces to live, and you are in a different world. Question 7: Each visa in Thailand has different requirements and paperwork needed. Do your due diligence and come prepared, knowing what visa you want and what you will need to make it happen. With an ED visa, if you do it multiple years, immigration may ask you to prove that you are really taking the classes and learning the material. So, if you are here to learn Thail language, they might ask you to demonstrate your Thai skills before approving the next year's visa for you. In other words, you can not come on an ED visa and just think you can not actually do any educational learning for a long-term stay in Thailand. Question 8: Chris is correct that you can live on $800 a month of you own your house or condo. I recommend a house so you do not have to pay the common fees every month, and a house that is not in a community with HOA fees. You might also want to consider living outside of the Big 4 cities (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, and Pucket) and live elsewhere to stretch that money further. Look at places like Chiang Rai, Pai, Hua Hin, and rural areas. Also, island living can be more expensive since products need to be transported to the island. Question 9: If the posting is indicative of his English skills, please do not come and try to be an English teacher. As for other jobs for younger people, there really are not many choices. Digital nomads is about the only other real option. Perhaps musician, but that is crap money. Thailand restricts foreigners from working in any job that might take a Thai job away from a local. The only other exception, and this can be researched online, is if you have a specialty skill that Thailand businesses need. Even becoming a KZbinr is difficult, as it takes months, if not years, to get yourself monetized and create a following that can pay a living wage. Even though Chris has a great following, he has also spent years building up his business to include an app service, merchandise, and other ventures. I am surprised he does not have sponsorships for his channel, as he is one of the most popular in Thailand doing KZbin. Question 10: No comment. I know...amazing...right?

I wish to move to Thailand & can not wait until the time arrives when I finally take a vacation there & set it up for me to make my permanent move there. I am a single mother (she’s been with me 100 percent of the time since she’s been born) her father is very controlling and rich so he has not signed her passport for years now I have been asking him. So that’s my biggest hurdle right now- otherwise I would already be there. I am determined to go there and also to get a lawyer and get full custody of my child so I can have the freedom that I crave. I also work remote, so I can travel all over. It’s amazing how American women are controlled even though we live in a so called free country.
