Until Sabena got closed,.and technics followed. By PLAIN luck, a buddy at.gym told about it. And even I didn't like traveling, I gave it a shot. I went 3.weeks. in 2011. Pattaya..... Vacation like, but just a ticket. I wanted to know sure if it would be a right choice. To live! It was clear quite soon. Live, 2.fundamental.needs..... are, health and economic stable, not worrysome. I had this tiny room, bothering nobody. Go if you can live from your savings, with even a small intrest. Daytrade or online if.you can. Life.is.cheap. You'll regret it!!! Life in the west, is horrible!!!! They show us china, with face tracing..... It's allready same here. Foreigners are better treated!!! In Thailand, you are king. Cheap charlie.... Oké , not the best BUT NEVER FORGET...... life in Europe or usa. Sorry for bad writing. My 2 cents.... I destroyed life by returning!!! Just speaking....THAILAND,... now people are stressed, struggling, and don't like ALOT, hearing you say this. Even if life is a social democracy here. It's a joke!!!! The more you try.... The more bills. Criminals have rights. Working.people.are.retarded.slaves!!!! It's a 1.exception. if you can financially, GRAB IT! Just don't be naïeve. Even at home. I was a nerd. And made a carrier, untill company closed. Never had 1 day social help or money! But they don't see that. They don't respect you for helping yourself living cheap in Thailand. Because THEY CANT BELIEVE!!! I'M just giving good advice. Can BS me....oké. Whatever. I'm trying to quickly give a good advice. I guess this video talks same. Go!!!! GO NOW !!!! West is going down financially. You don't attach! Make many buddies. You'll have many social life. Also in solitude without any worries..... Keep busy daytrading or WHATEVER. Little extra is alot. I don't live in Thailand yet, however, I took about 3 solid years to learn the language because I know I'll be living there within a few years. Personally, I think it's awesome to know the language. By no means am I fluent, but I can say pretty much anything in broken Thai. The times I have visited Thailand, armed with a decent grasp of the language, I was astounded by how willing the Thai people are to show you their culture.

Health Care in Thailand is world class. I ran into Chris when he was out for a walk in October this year. I had flown to Thailand specifically for surgery on my wrist. I had excellent care at Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital, a private hospital in Bangkok. Bangkok has dozens of top private hospitals. I also had some dental work while I was there.

so true sir. in fact, i found that thai people are more likely to help than be a threat. if someone sees or hears you're in trouble, or even if someone sees me struggling to communicate with a thai speaker, they'll step in and offer to help translate or help me find my destination. i was in a bar one night. some locals sat next to me. they bought me a beer. i bought them one. then, i said goodbye and left. A few minutes later, they came walking out. i was standing by the road calling my ride. They came over and asked me if i as ok and did i have a ride. with a genuine, kind smile. it was so refreshing. but, theyre right. i wouldnt hesitate to walk down a dark alley anywhere that ive been in thailand, bangkok (i havent seen all parts, so maybe theres a dark place i dont know about), kanchanaburi, phuket... all good. my wife, who is always scared, wasnt. she was more afraid of crossing the street. and , yes, theres a good reason to be scared of that. one time, i was waiting for an oppoturnity to cross, and an older woman, probabaly late 50s saw me. She came over and smiled and motioned for me to stay with her. she escorted me across the road lol. i followed her like a US football running back following his blocker rofl. kindness so much appreciated.

I'm totally digging this new channel! I love the honesty, like the political aspect and saving face. I prefer the saving face way of life to be honest. I find that western culture (at least in America) people are just down right mean and love to kick people when they're already down. However, the saving face culture can get frustrating when you're trying to understand how someone feels about something. I guess the balance between the two approaches is the best solution lol!

@le_th_3 ай бұрын
What I dislike about what they call "saving face" is the dishonesty of it, and I'm not speaking of any country specifically, but this broad, general culture of "saving face" found throughout Asia, especially in the males. If I ask them where something is, and they don't know, they will "save face" and give you directions to no where just to keep from telling you "I don't know". Worse still, I had several direct reports in San Francisco from the Philippines, Honk Kong, Beijing, Viet Nam, and trying to get them to tell you the truth was like pulling teeth. They were largely the sweetest, most generous people, but this deep seated need to save face was very counterproductive in both business, and when you are trying to ask for something as basic as directions to the nearest train station. When I was traveling alone in Bali, I had fewer issues there in Ubud, Candidasa, and Lovina. The men there were very helpful with directions, and if they didn't know, they would ask another person nearby if they knew. Just my two cents, if someone kicks you when you're down, they've shown you they have a character disorder and that is priceless information that should tell you to stay TF away from them. That is the character trait sadism showing up, which means you're dealing with a narcissist, borderline, sociopath, or malignant narcissist. In other words, RUN. Kindness is something we need more of in the world, in general, and we can be both honest and kind if we take a moment and employ empathy, considering how others will feel first before we speak.

@@buddhadug 10 rai is quite big, but I’m sure you can find it? You’ll have to be very thorough though, get an awesome agent you trust and I’m sure you and your wife plan to sail into the future together, so she would be the owner of the land. I however can’t even think how 10 rai would be easy to come by, we have 7 rai and her family accumulated it over multiple generations. What I CAN tell you in my experience with their past farm and our friends’ latest harvest, is that kiang farming is a very tedious devotion. You’ll need really good and loyal workers who are willing to work from 11pm until around 6 or 7AM every day, and when it’s rainy season, the water in the rubber cups can really hurt the bottom line. Maybe look for a rai and just get started to feel how you like it? I think with feet on the ground you will get all the answers you need. Hope that helps

I lived and worked in Bangkok for 6 years and loved it. I agree with this advice, although on the subject of safety, refer to point 7, krueng jai. Lose your cool in public and you may find that you get a disproportionate response. Likewise if your idea of fun is to hang out in seedy bars, expect the level of safety to drop there too, especially in the really touristy ones. Learn to speak Thai and your enjoyment will skyrocket. Likewise if you cultivate genuine Thai friendships your enjoyment of Thailand will increase tenfold.

Thank you for this educational opportunity. I've been going to Thailand since 2009, and I have to say that 9 out of the 10 subjects I know already. The one that you really educated me on is "Saving Face". I have someone I think the world of in Thailand and have decided to move there in 17 days, I'm so ready. But she ran into some trouble from her past recently, where she ended up getting all of her clothes taken from an ex mother in-law. It really upset me, and all I wanted to do was to go and get her stuff back. It upset me more when she said forget it. It might have been the part where I said some things that would prevent the lady from stealing anything for a while. My girlfriend convinced me that we should just move forward and it will pass. So September-October of 2023 I took her to Bangkok on a shopping spree to a recommended mall and hotel by you. She has all new clothes and shoes and a whole new life ahead of her. Thanks for your videos. knowing about saving face will save much unnecessary drama in the future. Hope to meet someday.

I’m a 45 year veteran motorcyclist. Scooters are logical in any city in Thailand. I’d hate to ride any true motorcycle in the city. Clutch in, clutch out every 10 seconds. Never getting in any gear higher than 3rd… lol. I see very few motorcycles in the city except the youngsters on their 150’s, 250’s, 300cc bikes. All for show. lol. The only way I’d own a motorcycle over there would be for touring on the highways. Even then, I rarely saw a biker on anything bigger than a 650. I have a scooter there and so does my wife. The hardest thing is training yourself to look into the other mirror more because you’re not on the right side of the road and people pass you on both sides!

I am a retired nurse, who has worked in the past in Thailand. Since my retirement 6 years ago I have been living in Thailand. What most people do not realize is that there are good and bad doctors everywhere (so also in the US, European countries, and Thailand). Most people get carried away by the notion of modern equipment. A good cook does not need the finest quality of ingredients whereas a poor cook will not be able to prepare a good meal even with the best ingredients. Being older I regularly use the Thai healthcare system and having worked in emergency care during my career as a nurse, I am quite at ease with the quality of care provided, although I think Thai doctors, like European and US ones, tend to overprescribe medication because there is a financial incentive to it. Concerning the cost of living you made a very valid point in the first section of your video: it all boils down to how much you can afford and what kind of lifestyle you want. Financial planning and common sense are essential for pensioners since the money available generally does not increase after one has retired.

Find a place 20 km from a 7-11 and you live reasonably well on $1000 a month. The temperatures are lower about four months a year in the north. The rest of the year is rainy or very hot. Sadly, air quality is getting worse each year not only in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Last year it was so bad [in Chiang Rai] that my wife and I packed up and spent two months in Seoul, S. Korea. This year we are looking to rent a pool villa for a couple months in southern Thailand closer to the water. You are spot on about the overly complex and inconvenient VISAs. The new LTR VISAs are relatively affordable and easy to apply. No scrutinizing of bank statements and no 90-day reporting. Finally, buy health insurance period. No ifs, and or buts!

I've been to Thailand three or four times and I'm just now starting preparations to move sometime this next 6 months or so, finally. And, I lost count of how many times he's taken the words right out of my mouth. I can tell he lives there. He is so spot on about everything he said and I'm almost at the end of the video at this point. truly. Good stuff sir. Don't feel bad sir I've started to learn Thai just kind of on my own and listen you guys there's like a whole completely different alphabet and 20 plus vowels depending on how you look at it and 40 + consonants. It's really different. But, he's correct you didn't need it in the anywhere near where there's tourists going on lots of tie speak enough and if there's other stranger nearby and you need help you can find that. And the Google Translate app is great now and even if the person you're talking to can't read you push the button and the phone speaks it and most of the time they understand that even when I had the volume turned down too low

lived up north in Mae Chan. Didnt have much trouble with very basic Thai language skills... numbers, Ps & Qs, hi and bye type stuff. Had a language app for detailed chat, but could fumble along without it most times. Great experience.

If considering moving to Thailand be aware that currencies fluctuate. When I moved here I was getting 70 baht to 1 UK pound. At times it's been down to 40 to the pound. I'm lucky that it's not too big a problem but if I had been on a tight budget originally I would have struggled big time.

Yes, it's half of what it costs in Canada. This is what expensive means. It's Thailand; I've heard it was 10 times cheaper many years ago. Either they are getting richer or we are getting a lot poorer.

I've walked around Bangkok at night many a time and never felt unsafe - Can't say the same about London, most areas of London I wouldn't dream of strolling around at 2am by myself. I've found as long as you keep your nose out of other people's business and are polite and know a few words in Thai then you'll be fine. Worst thing to happen to tourists or expats generally is small time scams, overcharging for things, bill padding and taxis / tuk tuks.

You left out a VERY important item from your list: The topic of DRIVING in Thailand. If somebody does indeed move to Thailand, they may want or need to drive (Depending on their situation). Motorbikes are a category and driving cars or small pickup trucks is another area of major concern. Chances are the way that local Thai people drive on the roads is ENTIRELY different from their home country. I suggest you might even make "Driving in Thailand" an episode on its own.

Hi Chris, love all your videos! Would you mind creating a video on tax status as a Canadian who now lives full-time in Thailand? ie) What did you lose in Canada by doing this - you mention healthcare. What else? Taxes on your RRSP when you take money out and bring it to Thailand. I'm curious to learn more about this as there is mixed content on yourtube. You are a source that a lot of us trust for your honest and accurate information. Looking forward to running into you in Samui in the next few months!

Thank you Chris, I am 74 and going to Thailand for the first time in March. I have watched two of your YT videos and find you have a great way of explaining Thailand. My biggest concern is the heat, I have been in Bejing and Australia. So I shall no doubt cope in Thailand.

This is the best video I have ever seen re: life, living , immigrating, retiring in Thailand. Very accurate and clear , honest and thoughtful advice and information. I will keep continuing watching. You may think my case is very strange, yes because I am Thai, but live in U.K. for 50 years . Now at the age of 75 and is planning to return to Thailand and had chosen Hua Hin for my destination. It’s hard , scary and worrying , luckily I still speak Thai fluently. Two most worrying things are driving and single elderly woman living on my own - is it safe??

Heat is a personal tolerance issue. A Canadian’s heat tolerance is usually going to be a lot lower than most other people.
Regarding long term visas, I think it's best to adopt the mindset that you can definitely get a visa, but it's going to be expensive, either in money (like Elite or EOR) or effort (volunteering or attending language school).

Great video. I live in Thailand. I live in an older condo in Pattaya (a 5-minute scooter ride to the beach). It is all concrete, so the rooms are quiet (I have a video of the condo). I am on the ninth floor, so the sunsets are great, and I do not have any trouble with mosquitoes up here. I do not get much road noise because I am on the ninth floor. We have a large pool with a slide. There is a restaurant by the pool; most meals are 3-7 dollars. My rent is $207/month. I have a new wall unit ac. It works great; a guy comes out the same day to fix it if it breaks. I run the ac 24/7 and my electric bill is $30/month. My room is 270 square feet or 30 square meters. It has plenty of room for a single guy. I have no plans to move back to the States.

Nice information, Chris. After many trips to Thailand (I just returned 3 days ago) I am starting to get serious & am hoping that I, too can make the move by this time next year. A lot of people say that Thailand is cheap & it is if you just want to exist but I believe that life there could easily soak up the money if left unchecked. Cheers

Great video. I am returning to Thailand next week for the 5th time since travel restrictions were lifted. My Thai fiance and I stayed at The Base Height condo on Phuket for 6 months (incredible infinity pool on the roof), and are now leasing a pool villa in Chalong. We are thinking about moving to Koh Samui next. We took up scuba last year and prefer the island life to being inland. We island hopped on earlier trips, including Koh Phi Phi, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, and Koh Lipe (x2). We are doing it on $4-5K USD per month.

THANK YOU so much for this super informative video. I've spent years traveling overseas and plan to retire in Thailand from Seattle, WA. I lived in Japan for a few years and London as well. The Visa portion for Thailand and health care system was really great and something I needed to hear. No kids or pets coming so things are simpler in that arena. My biggest concern is finding the correct building and area for longterm residency. Not too rural but I do require a gym and lap pool because fitness is a huge part of my life. I'm worried about lease terms and fully understanding the laws around a 5-10 yr lease. I'll keep watching your channel and learning!

I was doubtful of this list, but after having watched it, I agree with the points you bring up. I moved here with my family over a year ago and don't regret it. I also remind myself of the phrase, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Same thing with Thailand. Just go with the flow and you will be fine.

Thailand is not a third-world country, not at all. It's different, an emerging country, and most of the necessary services are solid first-world. Everything you said is spot on. I wish every potential expat could watch THIS video (mandatory viewing!) because all of these topics are important to consider BEFORE making the commitment.
@hobo1704 Жыл бұрын
It is third world, you obviously haven't seen how they really live..
@beverlyweber4122 Жыл бұрын
@@hobo1704 First World, Second World and Third World countries are products of the Three-World model, a concept that grouped all of the world’s countries into the three groups. This stratification of the countries was initially based on the basis of political ideology affiliation where First World countries were identified as the countries which were allied with the United States while Second World countries were countries which were allied with the Soviet Union. Third World countries were countries which supported neither the Soviet Union nor the United States. Historically, those who were NOT aligned to either super power fell off the radar, ignored and perceived as unworthy of attention. Obviously, Thailand is solidly ON the radar, as noted by the number of people who flock to Thailand every year from the "first world" and (lately, courtesy of the Ukraine situation) the "second world" which is literally invading hahaha

Great video, the basics apply to anywhere especially language. An understanding of a language absolutely breaks the ice in so many ways. It shows the locals that you are willing to “invest” in yourself. Lots of good info, you spent some time and thought about this video. Thanks for that. 👍
