Rwanda genocide perpetrator recounts forced killings, seeks forgiveness

A ceremony is getting underway in Rwanda to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1994 genocide.
In just 100 days, Hutu militias killed more than 800 thousand people, mostly from the ethnic Tutsi minority, as well as Hutu moderates.
It was triggered by the assassination of the Hutu president Juvenal Habyarimana.
Hutus accused Tutsi rebels from the Rwandan Patriotic Front of shooting down his plane.
The group denied involvement.
Between April and July, Hutu militias and elements within the Rwandan army slaughtered Tutsis and political opponents.
The killings finally stopped on July the 4th when the Rwandan Patriotic Front, backed by Uganda’s army, captured the capital, Kigali.
Nizireye Yohana's mother was a Tutsi and his father was a Hutu. He was 30 years old when he says Hutu forces made him kill Tutsis. Nizireye was jailed for 15 years by grassroots courts formed to serve justice in local communities after the genocide.
Mireille Abewe was only 12 years old when she lost her father in the Rwandan genocide.
She reflects on her journey of reconciliation.

I'll never forget. I can't. 30 years later, when I was barely 3 years old at the time of the genocide, the apocalyptic images remain engraved in my memory. Every commemoration reminds me of the horrors experienced by my family and brings back painful memories. I live with this trauma.😢 It's not the Rwandan genocide but the genocide against the Tutsis

I was 12 when this happened. On the 10th April, 1994, we had just watched Nigeria vs Zambia Nations Cup final. While we were celebrating our victory, the new came over the radio of the ongoing slaughter in Rwanda. I was scared and angry at the same time. Since that time, I’ve always remembered them every year. May the souls lost during the genocide continue rest in peace. Amen. I love you Rwanda. From a Nigerian.

I'm reading Machete season a book about the Tutsi Genocide from the killers confessions, but what really hurt me the most is thé smashing of babies heads against rocks & walls😢 And also the brutal rape Tutsi women were subjected to before being killed in the most gruesome way. It really broke me and at some point I almost lost my faith in God but everything happens for a reason.
